Importation and Clearance process in Nigeria
Importation and clearance in Nigeria is quite challenging, to begin with individuals are restricted from clearing the cars themselves, and this give the licensed agents an opportunity to extort money from you.
Steps to clear your car
1. Request a car bill of lading
This is a document that will be gotten from the foreign shipping agent. It can be sent through courier services, and it can also be sent to your personal email address for you to print and use. This document will contain vital information about your car like, the name, model, year of production, vechile identification number, weight, port of origin and discharge
2. Send an application for import duty valuation
You will have to type a letter and attach it with the car bill of lading and send it to the custom service. After the letter has been sent, a receipt will be sent back to you stating the actual worth of the car, and it will be be used to measure 35% surface duty and 35% levy to the custom. So in total 70% of the actual amount of the car would be paid (and this does not include tax or any other fee)
3. Online processes
After the importation duty valuation has been successfully, you will have to submit an electronic manifesto to the custom service, and then print out your (Single Goods Declaration Form.
4. Inspection
After a forms have been submitted, a document containing a date for inspection will be provided.
5. Exiting
After inspection, with all your forms duly signed and stamp, you can get Terminal Delivery Order (TDO) and afterward, you car will be checked one more time. Once you passed you just succeeded in clearing your vechile.
But after this you will still have to get your vechile registered, and get a new plate number. All this makes the whole process quite exhausting and boring, but if you can pull it through. Congratulations.
