Job Moonlighting ! Good or Bad

Hello Friends,

Good day to you. Hope the day is going well for you and it's going well for me also.

Moonlighting is one of the topics that was the hot news until a few months back in India. Now the industry has started asking their employees to report to the office. Different companies have different approaches whereas the majority of companies follow the hybrid working model. They are asking their employees to work 2 to 3 days from the office and rest from home. It's like they do not want their employees to be working remotely for the entire week as well and they also do not want them to be coming office every day.

You can say it's a mixed environment in which companies are driving and this is helping employees as well as the companies. However, it is not easy because many employees are not okay to visit the office after the lockdown time. We are aware that because of the pandemic lockdown work from home was a need. This has happened globally and now when the situation is coming back to normal these companies are asking their employees to return to the office. The majority of employees are OK with that but still, there is a chunk that is not OK to return to the office. They want the same working model to be continued but not every company is okay with this. While some organisations have announced that they will follow the complete work-from-home model still some organizations are going with the hybrid model.

During work from home, moonlighting was another issue that was highlighted by some organizations. I want to explain what Moonlighting is and for that, I searched chat GPT. I used AI to find the answer to this question but I do not use AI technology to write content for me.

Now as per the AI moonlighting is the practice in which any individual is involved in a second job or is working on some additional assignment and legally this is not allowed. Many companies put a clause on their offer while joining that the employee cannot be involved in a second job and it is not allowed as per the contractual agreement. If we talk about the normal scenario when everyone needs to visit the office then it is not possible. But now because of the work-from-home culture, this is easy because every organization follows the same model and the person can work for two companies or some additional assignment.

Many employees were found because their Provident fund contribution was tracked by the government. The company took strict action on such employees as per the media news update and they were terminated with immediate effect. Now it's about the company part but as an individual what do you think about it?

I think moonlighting is a practice that can help the individual but to be honest it can be a very stressful situation since dealing with two assignments is not easy. Secondly, it is also a kind of unfair practice from the employment of you because the person won't be able to focus on one company so there is a high possibility that the deliverables will not be as expected.

The topic is worth discussing more people can have different opinions but I believe the monitor benefit is good for the employee but from the health point of view it is not. It can be a good option to earn some additional money but that should not be for the long term because it can affect your health which is never a good idea. In my opinion, moonlighting is not a good practice instead we should focus on one job and if we're not satisfied then we should look for another option instead of involving ourselves in another assignment. This can also bring some legal challenges to the employers if found doing this.
