Restaurant Review: Nim’s Chang Mai Thai Cuisine in Hilo, Hawaii

Nim’s Chang Mai Thai Cuisine in Hilo, Hawaii

  • Introduction

I found a new Thai Restaraunt in Hilo on Kanoelehua Avenue, good food and decent prices.

Nim’s features Northern Thai Cuisine

  • ChangMai is in Northern Thailand, so the food tastes different from your typical Thai Cusine which is Southern Thailand Cuisine. The capitol of Thailand is Bangkok, which is in the south, and so it provides Southern Thai Cuisine.

#Parking

  • This is the view from the parking lot, the shopping center is right off highway and has good parking.

  • Inside the Restaraunt you are greeted by a beautiful five foot tall carving of a lady standing and holding her hands together in the Thai greeting pose. She is greeting you and welcoming you to the restaurant.
  • I noted that Southern Thai restaurants have a golden lady, with golden clothing, while this Northern Thai Restaurant has one who is a more natural skin color and very formal Thai clothing which is a pretty red and brown color.

  • Inside it was simple, but very nice, pretty white walls, nice simulated wooden floors, and the air conditioning made it cool and comfortable.

  • The Restaraunt was decorated with pictures of elephants, and Thai dancers adorning the walls.
  • The tables and chairs were solid and sturdy. The table cloths were embroidered with pretty intricate geometric patterns and with elephants. - The elephants on the tablecloth and pictures are common in Thai restaurants because Elephants are very popular in Thailand.

  • Elephants

  • Thai Dancers

  • Very elegant velvet like table cloth with elephant embroidery

  • Plus a picture of the King of Thailand high on a wall. But I didn’t take a picture of the King. I know the Thai people have many rules about how to treat images of the king, so out of respect I didn’t photograph it.

Food

I started off with Deep Fried Thai Spring Rolls, a favorite appetizer at any Thai Restaraunt.

  • They were delicious , crispy, and filled with vegetables.

Next I had the Pad Thai Noodles a favorite dish at any Thai Restaraunt.

  • It was very good.

Then I had the Yellow Curry which tasted quite different from Southern Thai Yellow Curry.

  • It was very good, but tasted different once again from Southern Thai cuisine, less coconut milk and peanuts were noticeably absent.

Then I washed it all down with delicious Thai Ice Tea with coconut milk.

I rated it A plus overall.

  • Furniture high quality sturdy tables and chairs
  • Food was delicious and modestly priced
  • Service was prompt and Polite
  • I felt good after eating and made plans to go again.
