Onboarding is a big issue here on the blockchain...

We've seen some creative ways to help get newer members onboarded and it's sure a lot better than it was only a few short years ago.

However, this is still a major stumbling block for us on Hive. Sure, we understand what a posting key versus an active key, but for new members to the blockchain this is just one of the 'culture shocks' that they must learn.

I wanna share with you my experience over the past few days here on Hive and introduce you to @rick-scarrow

Rick is one of my best friends on planet earth. And he's been having to put up with me 'preach' about Hive to him for years. He's always been interested in crypto and has a MASSIVE hatred for traditional social media, so I figured...He would be the perfect candidate to introduce to the blockchain.

Almost 5 years later lol He's taken the dive and started his journey!

I've been going over the basics for him but what I've found over the past few days is a little scary...

Rick is a pretty sharp dude and is picking things up fairly quickly. However Hive has a massive learning curve that if Rick wasn't a patient guy, might have left before he even got started.

There is SO much to learn.

How many others have been onboarded to Hive, just to give up because it is not as straight forward as 'TikTok'?

He's getting it though....

I've got him going through the Hive Guide and he's said it's helped, and I told him...

Once he 'understands' this delegation stuff, he might start dropping some big bucks into some stake lol

So it's been a challenge for him I'm sure, to learn the intricacies of Hive...But he's onboard and creating content now plus he seems to really be enjoying his time so far!

But here's my thoughts after helping Rick this week:

  • It must be more straight forward! Giving people all these account keys at the start is just not needed right away. Let them learn what each key does and how they will need to use it while actually...Using the chain.

  • Communities are VERY confusing at first. Especially when learning how tags work and what goes where in a post. I'm not aware but if we can get rid of hive-3734947y494 for a community name and just call it 'The Awesome Community' or something...That would help lol

  • Layer 2 is awesome! But it makes zero sense at first. Telling people they are on Hive but they can earn CTP tokens on top of Hive because it's a layer 2 token...Is just another language. The focus must be on the apps, and let the blockchain just do it's thing behind the scenes.

  • Which brings me to that...Maybe Hive is best served, behind the scenes? Let the technology do it's thing and make the applications the focal point of this blockchain. If we create a SUPER simple way to onboard and let the apps promote themselves, I think Hive will explode on so many levels!

Just a few observations...Nothing that we don't already know lol

But I'll let Rick add anything in comments below as well...See what he thinks so far and share his experiences...

Shameless promotion, make sure you give him a follow and welcome him to the community too lol. His account is @rick-scarrow

And I would love to hear what your experience has been with onboarding friends and family...

What are some of the issues they have brought up? And maybe if we focus on individual onboarding experiences, we can make it easier for the masses to experience this amazing community and blockchain!
