The majority of Algeria's gold reserves are held by the country's central bank, the Bank of Algeria. The Bank of Algeria is responsible for managing and maintaining the country's gold reserves. The bank holds the gold in its vaults and uses it to support the stability of the country's economy. The bank can use the gold reserves to support the value of the Algerian dinar, to help finance the country's debt, and to help the country weather economic downturns.

Gold has played an important role in Algeria's history. The Berber people of Algeria were known to have mined and traded gold as far back as the 1st millennium BC. The country's modern gold industry began in the 1970s, with the development of several gold mines in the southern part of the country.

Despite its long history in gold mining, Algeria's current gold production is relatively small. The country produced only about 4,000 kilograms of gold in 2020, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). This represents a decline from previous years, and is due in part to a lack of investment in the country's mining sector.

Algeria's gold reserves have fluctuated over the years, depending on a variety of factors. For example, changes in the price of gold can affect the value of the country's gold reserves. Economic conditions, such as inflation or recession, can also impact the demand for and value of gold.
