Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been ordered to pay compensation to a journalist for making degrading remarks against her. According to the decision by a Sao Paulo court, Bolsonaro will have to pay 20,000 reais (about $3,500) to Patricia Campos Mello, He's said a lot of insane and unhinged things about the virus. Some of Bolsonaro's critics wants him to be tried for crimes against humanity.
There are some countries with leaderships who've arguably acted negligent towards their population throughout this pandemic which arguably could constitutes as a soft- or indirect genocide. I wonder how practical it is to hold someone accountable at e.g. the ICC on these grounds though.
He's said it was just a small flu. He's said he is not a gravedigger. He's said to Covid victims to quit whining and called them sissies. That it's not his responsibility to seek out vaccine manufacturers. He's said he was particularly resilient because of his athletic physique. He's called the pandemics mass hysteria and fictitious. He insulted the Chinese we rely on for vaccines. He suggested many deaths are fabricated to make him look bad. He promoted maskless events both inside and outside government facilities. He shunned close advisors for wearing masks. He associated wearing masks with homosexuality. He said this wasn't an alarming situation. He fought judicial battles with local authorities over lockdown measures. He actively promoted chloroquine and spent millions manufacturing and distributing it (still does). He runs a fake news propagating machine right next to his office managed by his own son. He encourages his followers to offend, pursue and unseat Justices and Congressmen.
I could go on indefinitely, since he's been doing this for 30 years in Congress. It's been a long year with daily doses of bullshit and public outcry, much like Trump's administration - but dumber and way more dangerous in a democracy not as solidified as America's.
