MSTR buying BTC again

Microstrategy has been relatively timid during Q2 and Q3 of 2022. Over a period of 6 months, they “only” bought 781 Bitcoin for a total of $16 million. Activity picked up in Q4 2022.

  • 2500 BTC in Q4 2022
  • 6455 BTC between February 16th and March 23rd 2023
  • 1045 BTC between March 24th and April 4th 2023

MSTR bought 8’108 Bitcoin in the whole of 2022. They already added 7’500 Bitcoin in 2023 – and the second quarter has barely started.

That amounts to 0,7% of 21 million Bitcoin.

Bitcoin Ownership

Starting August 2020, Microstrategy bought in aggregate 140 thousand BTC at a total cost of $4,2 billion for an average price of $30k.

With BTC at $27’893 today, this amounts to a market value of $3,9 billion and an overall paper loss of $302 million. The total position is only 7,2% underwater.

The situation has improved dramatically compared to the middle of last year. On the 29th of June 2022 the loss on paper was $1’366 million with Bitcoin at $21,1k.
