KI benötigt riesige Mengen an Strom. Der weltgrößte Softwarekonzern Microsoft hat nun einen Stromabnahmevertrag mit Constellation Energy geschlossen, in dessen Rahmen der Kraftwerksbetreiber einen von drei Blöcken des Atomkraftwerks Three Mile Island wieder in Betrieb nimmt.

Im Block 2 des Atomkraftwerks, der von der jetzigen Vereinbarung nicht betroffen ist und völlig unabhängig von Block 1 besteht, ereignete sich am 28. März 1979 eine Kernschmelze. Zudem gab es weitere Störfälle in diesem Block, nachdem er Jahre später wieder in Betrieb genommen worden war.
Für KI werden riesige Rechenzentren aufgebaut und die verbrauchen jede Menge an Strom. Ob da nun ein AKW wirklich die ideale Lösung ist, bleibt eine offene Frage. Denn auch die #USA haben das Problem der Lagerung des #Atommuells nicht gelöst.
Das einzige zurzeit betriebene Endlager von hochradioaktiven Abfällen liegt in den USA: Die Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Die Anlage dient allerdings exklusiv der Entsorgung von Abfällen aus militärischer Kernenergienutzung.

Constellation Energy legt ordentlich zu
Eine Technologie einzusetzen, die äußerst gefährliche Abfälle erzeugt für die aber noch keine wirkliche Lösung zur Lagerung oder Beseitigung gefunden wurde, halte ich für problematisch.
