Over the years, there has been continuous advancement in technology. There was a time button phones reigned, and owning one was a social symbol of affluence. Today, we have foldable phones, screen-touch phones, finger-print enabled phones, face-recognition phones and many other beautiful features on the list. Before the Android OS made its debut in 2008, the existing OS was Symbian. Symbian is believed to be the inventor of the smartphone category, but just as the topic connotes, I will be writing on the Android OS and why you should know you are among the lucky and advanced ones to own an android phone.

What is an Android Phone?

Firstly, it is germane to note that Android is not a phone brand. It's a mobile OS (Operating System). A mobile OS makes up the totality of a phone's functions. It can be likened to a wireless chip that coordinates the functionality of phones such as navigation, network speed, data storage etc. So in as much as Infinix, itel, Tecno, and Samsung are phone brands, they all work with the Android OS, and as such, qualify as android phones. And yes, we cannot deny that Android has one very obvious competition: iOS. iOS is the mobile operating system of Apple products, asides from their laptop and desktops that use the macOS.

Some Android Phones that keep topping the charts.

Samsung phones are usually considered the flagship of all Android phones. Some people retort, claiming the Xiaomi Redmi phones are better. Besides the two, there are other Android phones topping the chart like Oppo, OnePlus and Google phones.

Between the iOS and Android OS, which is better?

There have been a whole lot of comparisons and banter to argue this point. People have taken to their social media to explain why either is better than the other. Well, iOS supporters argue that iOS provides total security and other sleek features like iCloud, iMessage, passkeys and live text in videos. Android defenders argue that iOS claims to be a luxury phone just because of its exorbitant price and unnecessary updates every other month. One Android user said:
"iOS phone upgrades are scam. They add an additional fake camera to the back or change its position and tag it as an upgrade. The interface remains hard to navigate and so many other unnecessary and power draining features for a phone that constantly lags with battery capacity..."

Another person took to his Instagram to post:
"I've used both android and iOS phones. What I realised is that Android provides flexibility, ease of use and amazing features. Whereas iOS can only boast of the fingerprint sensor being at the front, and the high prices, of course.

Bants asides, what do the states say?

In 2021, 1.43 billion smartphones were sold, with 83.32% of Android. I mean, Android is a household name that proves to be more popular than Microsoft OS, Windows. The numbers do not lie. Not only do Android phones dominate the market, but they are also affordable for every social class and come in handy. The major aim of technological advancement is efficiency. Cheaper, yet very functional; that is what Android is, indubitably so. There is always a significant impact on the current Android version from the previous one. So next time someone tries to shame you for using an android phone, give them these statistics. It is left for them to cry themselves to sleep, or, as the popular saying goes, "if you can't defeat them, join them." To all Android users, here is to forever more to go. Cheers!
