Qué emocionante es ver a Demi Moore, imposible no amarla y recordarla como nuestra bella Molly en la película Ghost junto a Patrick Swayze, todavía hoy la veo y lloro de nuevo, o como la valiente Teniente O´Neill en la película G.I. Jane donde se rapó la cabeza, increíble ese momento tan poderoso. Ha estado en muchas otras películas, pero estas han sido las que realmente me atraparon y las vuelvo a ver cada cierto tiempo, fueron emocionantes, emotivas y me llegaron al corazón.
Ahora en el 2024 llega con La Sustancia, que principalmente recordaré por su nivel de actuación, imaginar esta película en una actriz que no sea capaz de transmitir las emociones que tiene el personaje de Elisabeth Sparkle, sería en mi opinión comprometer su éxito, es maravilloso ver que Demi Moore tiene una madurez actoral que ciertamente la pone a la altura de actrices como Susan Sarandon, Jaime Lee Crutis, Julia Roberts o Julianne Moore, solo por nombrar a las que más admiro.

La otra actriz que protagoniza La Sustancia es Margaret Qualley, en el personaje de Sue quien tiene varios trabajos en películas, pero que personalmente recuerdo es por la serie Las Cosas por Limpiar, de la cual hice mi post hace unos meses, y que me gustó mucho. En La Sustancia, Margaret también tuvo una actuación impecable, ella es bellísima que era lo que necesitaba ese personaje, pero su rostro mostraba todos sus sentimientos increíblemente, el miedo, el sentido de ridículo, su vanidad, todo lo podíamos entender con sus expresiones.

La premisa es bastante común, ya que las mujeres siempre queremos ser o lucir más jóvenes y bellas, pero el surrealismo de esta película es que la Versión Mejorada de ella es otra Mujer que sale de su cuerpo, y con quien intercambiará cada 7 días, siendo la misma persona o conciencia pero que cada 7 días cambia de un cuerpo a otro.
Esta película es una crítica bastante fuerte a la industria del entretenimiento, que tienen estándares de belleza absurdos e inalcanzables, donde las mujeres se someten cada día a tratamientos más dolorosos e invasivos para cumplir con esos estándares y mantener sus carreras a flote o estar elegibles para proyectos. Esta realidad es totalmente cierta, pero La Sustancia la aborda de una forma muy exagerada, surrealista y sobre todo difícil de ver así lo sabemos desde el principio, no se vende de otra forma, lo que vamos a ver al cine es eso.

Tengo rato viendo las películas o series y valorando otras cosas que antes no veía, como la paleta de colores, el guion y constantemente me pregunto qué quiso decir el director con esta toma o encuadre.
Desde el principio La Sustancia me inquietó la paleta de colores tan estridentes y saturados, como cuando le subimos el brillo a nuestro teléfono, se sintió como inquietante y surrealista, sentí que desde el principio nos iban a presentar o a contar una historia con una narración exagerada intencionalmente, parecía un capítulo de la serie Black Mirror, y la historia fácilmente podría haber sido de esa serie.
I spend a while watching movies or series and appreciating other things that I didn't see before, like the color palette, the script, and I constantly wonder what the director wanted to say with this shot or frame.
From the beginning The Substance disturbed me with the color palette so strident and saturated, like when we turned up the brightness on our phone, it felt disturbing and surreal, I felt that from the beginning they were going to present or tell us a story with an intentionally exaggerated narration, it seemed like an episode of the Black Mirror series, and the story could easily have been from that series.
Los encuadres o tomas de los personajes eran bastantes cercanos o cercas de sus rostros, mostrando invasivamente algo que nos quiere decir su Directora Coralie Fargeat. Es inquietante ese sentimiento de estar invadiendo el espacio personal de los personajes.
Cuando se acerca a Elisabeth podemos ver la angustia en sus ojos, sus arrugas y manchas, solo con mirarle los ojos podemos entender que está tratando de resolver su situación pero que está muy desesperada.
Ahí otro personaje que es Harvey, el jefe de Elisabeth, interpretado por Dennis Quaid; sus tomas son tan cercas que lo distorsionan, hacia su boca cuando come de forma asquerosa y vulgar, esta simple escena fue muy difícil de ver sobre todo para mí, ya que no soporto ni que hagan ruido al comer, y ver lo asqueroso que comía no lo soporté mucho.
Cuando vemos al Sue sonreír con la cámara tan cerca, siempre transmite su nerviosismo y angustia casi no lo puede sostener. Es decir, que la cámara tan cerca definitivamente es una forma de narrar esta historia y el estilo que nos presenta.
The shots of the characters were quite close to their faces, invasively showing something that Director Coralie Fargeat wants to tell us. It is disturbing that feeling of invading the characters' personal space.
When she approaches Elisabeth we can see the anguish in her eyes, her wrinkles and spots, just by looking at her eyes we can understand that she is trying to solve her situation but she is very desperate.
There is another character who is Harvey, Elisabeth's boss, played by Dennis Quaid; his shots are so close that they distort it, towards her mouth when she eats in a disgusting and vulgar way, this simple scene was very difficult to see especially for me, since I can't stand even when people make noise when eating, and seeing how disgusting she ate I couldn't stand it very much.
When we see Sue smiling with the camera so close, she always transmits her nervousness and anguish, she can hardly hold it. That is to say, the camera so close is definitely a way of narrating this story and the style that it presents to us.
La Sustancia ME GUSTÓ mucho la premisa, el estilo de narración y las actuaciones que fue lo mejor de lo mejor. Las escenas que fueron muy fuertes de ver y que representan la calificación de Horror, me gustaron, estuvieron bien realizadas e innovadoras de alguna forma. Sin embargo debo decir lo que definitivamente NO ME GUSTO:
La escena final o el acto final ha sido Exageradamente largo y bizarro, casi innecesario. Se convirtió en una película de terror de los años 80´s donde la sangre y los gritos simplemente no paraban. Este final distrae del mensaje tan importante de la película, fue como ya les dije innecesario y para mí la película debía terminar en un punto dentro de lo que nos presentaron y corta el final.
Pero LA RECOMIENDO AMPLIAMENTE, vayan a verla...
The Substance I LIKED the premise, the storytelling style and the acting which was the best of the best. The scenes that were very hard to watch and that represent the Horror rating, I liked, they were well done and innovative in some way. However, I must say what I definitely DID NOT LIKE:
The final scene or the final act was Exaggeratedly long and bizarre, almost unnecessary. It became an 80's horror movie where the blood and screams just didn't stop. This ending distracts from the very important message of the movie, it was as I already told you unnecessary and for me the movie had to end at a point within what they presented to us and it cuts the ending short.
But I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT, go see it...
