The idea that dark forces such as cults exist in our society generates a feeling of curiosity, danger and adrenaline. This is why it is one of the most striking themes in the seventh art, for many years now and personally it is my favorite genre.
Of course, cults can be religious, but also political, ideological, social groups, etc. However, I think that satanic cults are often used in films because they easily include the fear and tension factor, with the representation of evil, rituals, sacrifices, control over our lives and even violence, they are fascinating elements to create a story and if other elements are also included such as good acting, special effects, psychological terror and suspense, then it can be a guaranteed success.
However, Department 7A having all these ingredients, I think it did not succeed. I cannot tell you that it was a bad film, in fact I do not feel that I wasted my time watching it; but I do regret the debt it leaves me for not remembering it among my favorites.
La idea de que fuerzas oscuras como sectas existen en nuestra sociedad nos genera una sensación de curiosidad, peligro y adrenalina. Es por esto que es uno de los temas llamativos en el séptimo arte, desde hace muchos años y personalmente es mi género preferido.
Claro que las sectas pueden ser religiosas, pero también políticas, de ideologías, de grupos sociales, etc. Sin embargo, pienso que las sectas satánicas son muy usadas en películas porque tienen fácilmente incluido el factor de miedo y tensión, con la representación del mal, los rituales, sacrificios, el control sobre nuestras vidas e incluso la violencia, son elementos fascinantes para crear una historia y si además se incluyen otros elementos como buenas actuaciones, efectos especiales, el terror psicológico y el suspenso, pues puede ser un éxito garantizado.
Sin embargo, Departamento 7A contando con todos estos ingredientes, pienso que no lo logró. No puedo decirles que fue una mala película, de hecho no siento que haya perdido mi tiempo viéndola; pero si lamento la deuda que me deja para no recordarla entre mis favoritas.

Although I have been a fan of film and television since my teens, I am gradually paying more attention to aspects such as directors, production companies behind those works, deeper analysis, etc. But, I must confess that when I see an actor or actress on the bill of a film or series, I will most likely venture to see it.
Such is the case of the film Apartment 7A which stars Julia Garner whom I met as Ruth Langmore in the series Ozark, and I have followed her since then, although I have not always liked the projects she has chosen. Yesterday, looking at the options on the Paramount Plus platform, I came across this film which is also in the Horror genre which is my favorite, so I simply chose it without even having heard of it.
Department 7A begins with our protagonist Terry Gionoffrio, a dancer who performs a very impressive maneuver or step in a play and when she falls her foot completely bends, so the play is interrupted and she goes straight to the operating room. All of this happens with a rather interesting narrative of shots, very vivid and vintage colors, and a good performance by Julia Garner.
Aunque he sido fanática del cine y televisión desde mi adolescencia, progresivamente estoy prestando más atención a los aspectos como directores, empresas productoras detrás de esos trabajos, análisis más profundos, etc. Pero, debo confesar que cuando veo a un actor o actriz en la factura de una película o serie, lo más seguro es que me aventure a verla.
Tal es el caso de la película Departamento 7A que está protagonizada por Julia Garner a quien conocí como Ruth Langmore en la serie Ozark, y la seguí desde entonces, aunque no siempre me han gustado los proyectos que ha elegido. Ayer viendo las opciones en la plataforma Paramount Plus, me topé con esta película que además es del género Terror que es mi preferido, así que simplemente la elegí sin ni siquiera haber escuchado de ella.
Departamento 7A comienza con nuestra protagonista Terry Gionoffrio, una bailarina que en una obra realiza una maniobra o paso muy impresionante y que al caer se dobla por completo el pie, por lo que interrumpen la obra y va directo al quirófano, todo esto ocurre con una narrativa bastante interesante de planos, colores muy vivos y vintage, y una buena actuación de Julia Garner.
After the injury we see Terry walking around with her foot still injured, taking pills to bear the pain and dance normally, as she wants to work as a dancer because it is her dream and to pay off her debts. She goes to several auditions where she is not accepted, and in one of these auditions she meets producer Alan Marchand, who asks her to do something humiliating, she does not agree. Then, she takes several pills and follows him to the emblematic Bramford building, but outside the building Terry faints and is rescued by an elderly couple who happen to live in that building, they take her there and treat her well to the point of allowing her to live in one of their apartments in that building.
This elderly couple is somewhat strange, at a dinner with Alan he drugs her and it turns out that Terry ends up being raped, although she does not remember anything about this. Now she is pregnant and very strange things begin to happen, related to a Satanic Sect.
Luego de la lesión vemos a Terry caminando lastimada aún del pie, consumiendo pastillas para soportar el dolor y bailar normal, ya que es su deseo trabajar como bailarina porque es su sueño y para pagar sus deudas. Asiste a varias audiciones donde no la aceptan, y en una de estas audiciones conoce al productor Alan Marchand, quien le pide hacer algo humillante, ella no accede. Luego, se toma varias pastillas y lo sigue al emblemático edifico Bramford, pero fuera del edificio Terry se desmaya y es rescatada por una pareja de ancianos que casualmente viven en ese edificio, la llevan allá y la tratan bien el punto de permitirle vivir en uno de sus departamentos en ese edificio.
Esta pareja de ancianos son algo extraños, en una cena con Alan ésta la droga y resulta que Terry llega a ser violada, aunque no recuerda nada de esto. Ahora está embarazada y comienzan a pasar cosas muy extrañas, relacionadas con una Secta Satánica.
At this point I recognized the premise or the plot slightly, it reminded me a lot of Rosemary's Baby that I saw when I was very young, although I thought that this could not be a Remake, because in that movie the protagonists were Mia Farrow and her husband, impossible to forget her performance and that scene where the pregnant woman had strange cravings to eat raw meat.
It turns out that Apartment 7A is a Prequel in which Terry Gionoffrio is the pregnant woman with the Devil's Baby, who will experience situations, dreams or visions that will make her understand what surrounds her and what they expect from her.
I think it's good to address that Satanic Sect of the Bramford building, since as they tell us in the movie, they have tried many times to finally get the mother of that creature without having been successful. So, we should have many stories not only Terry's and Rosmary's, but this movie was not up to Rosemary's Baby in my opinion for several factors.
En este punto reconocí la premisa o la trama levemente, me recordó mucho a La Semilla del Diablo o El bebé de Rosmery que vi cuando era muy joven, aunque pensé que esto no podía ser un Remake, porque en esa película los protagonistas eran a Mia Farrow y su esposo, imposible olvidar su actuación y aquella escena donde embarazada tenía antojos extraños de comer carne cruda.
Resulta que Departamento 7A es una Precuela en la que Terry Gionoffrio es la embarazada con la Semilla del Diablo, que experimentará situaciones, sueños o visiones que la harán entender lo que la rodea y lo que esperan de ella.
Me parece bien abordar a esa Secta Satánica del edificio Bramford, ya que como nos dicen en la película, ellos han tratado muchas veces lograr por fin a la madre de esa criatura sin haber tenido éxito. De manera que, deberíamos disponer de muchas historias no solo la de Terry y la de Rosmary, pero esta película no estuvo a la altura de El bebé de Rosmary en mi opinión por varios factores.
1- The Script: Nowadays, we, the consumers of movies and series, are more mature and we value not only a good story, but also the way of telling the story, fundamentally in the script and the narration styles. In Apartment 7A, for example, the script was not at all relevant, it is not even that there are many dialogues, only some and later disconnected.
2- Forced references: There are many props that simply appeared and then were not. It was like forced that some elements were there and without greater importance than that of making reference to Rosmary's Baby and I say this with authority since I had to look for this movie again to see it, remember some things and realize that many references were really forced.
3- The various forms of evil: They overused the representations of evil in different forms, that is, they had like 3 masks or disguises, so to speak, to represent evil, in order to generate fear and this was not necessary and was even confusing.
4- FEMINISM: Another film in which the protagonist is a woman, the old woman is mainly the one who has importance in the sect, the friend, the dancers, in short, all the relevant characters in this film are women, the men are simply there to make things happen like the old man (I can't tell you why I say this), Alan to hook her, but they are there to make things happen, they are really not relevant.
1- El Guion: En este momento nosotros los consumidores de películas y series somos más maduros y valoramos no solo una buena historia, sino también la forma de narrar la historia, fundamentalmente en el guion y los estilos de narración. En Departamento 7A por ejemplo el guion no fue nada relevante, ni siquiera es que haya muchos diálogos, solo algunos y desconectados posteriormente.
2- Referencias forzadas: Hay muchos elementos de utilería que simplemente aparecieron y luego ya no. Fue como forzado que estuviesen algunos elementos y sin mayor importancia que el de hacer referencia a El bebé de Rosmary y esto lo digo con propiedad ya que tuve que buscar nuevamente esta película para verla, recordar algunas cosas y darme de cuenta de que realmente se forzaron muchas referencias.
3- Las varias formas del mal: Abusaron de las representaciones del mal en diferentes formas, es decir tuvieron como 3 máscaras o disfraces por decirlo de una manera, para representar al mal, a manera de generar susto y esto no era necesario y fue hasta confuso.
4- El FEMINISMO: Otra película en la que la protagonista es mujer, la anciana es principalmente la que tiene importancia en la secta, la amiga, las bailarinas, en fin que todos los personajes relevantes en esta película son mujeres, los hombres están simplemente para que las cosas pasen como el anciano (no puedo adelantarle por que lo digo), Alan para engancharla, pero ellos están para que pasen las cosas, realmente no son relevantes.
1- Julia Garner's performance, I really loved how expressive she is, and seeing her when she danced and got into character, with those clean and open movements. You can tell she really prepared herself at this point, I imagine she eventually had a double, maybe, but it looked very real.
2- The sets, everything from the period from the streets, the cars, the rooms, the theater, everything was beautiful. It almost made you want to check out each room with all the decorations.
3- The costumes, everything from the period with beautiful textures, taking care of even the fashionable shoes, the dancers' outfits, etc.
4- The ending. The situation of the Satanic sect and how they tried to exert control over it, and the way it resolved everything, I really liked it. It's not that it was something epic to remember in this genre, but I think it was the scene I liked the most.
1- La actuación de Julia Garner, me encantó mucho lo expresiva que es, y verla cuando bailaba y entraba en el personaje, con esos movimientos tan limpios y abiertos. Se nota que realmente se preparó en este punto, me imagino que eventualmente tuvo una doble, tal vez, pero se vio muy real.
2- Los escenarios, todo de época desde las calles, los carros, las habitaciones, el teatro, todo fue hermoso. Casi daba ganas de revisar cada habitación con todos los adornos.
3- Los vestuarios, todo de época con hermosas texturas, cuidando incluso los zapatos de moda, los trajes de los bailarinas, etc.
4- El final. La situación de la secta satánica y cómo trataron de ejercer control sobre ella, y la forma como resolvió todo me gustó mucho. No es que haya sido algo épico para recordar en este género, pero creo que fue la escena que más me gustó.
Do I recommend watching Apartment 7A?
Yes, especially to my children for example, who have not seen Rosemary's Baby and can learn the history of the emblematic Bramford Building, even if it is not a memorable film. Also to follow the career of Julia Garner who is very young and has a lot of future as an actress, we will be able to enjoy another good performance.
