This is my first postin this community and I thought it was a good idea to start with this contest that caught my attention. Normally I am not a consumer of the horror genre, however when it comes to the subject there is a movie that is engraved in my memory since I saw it, back in the 80s, especially for a particular scene which I will talk about later, it is Pet Sematary, based on the book by Stephen King, but without further ado let's start with the analysis of this film.
Esta es mi primera publicación en esta comunidad y me pareció bien iniciar con este Concurso concurso que llamó mi atención. Normalmente no soy consumidor del genero terror, sin embargo cuando se trata del tema hay una película que se quedó grabada en mi memoria desde que la vi, por allá en los años 80, sobre todo por una escena en particular de la cual les hablaré más adelante, se trata de Cementerio de Mascotas, basada en el libro de Stephen King, pero ya sin más preámbulo vamos a iniciar con el análisis de este film.
Resumen/synopsis
A young doctor moves with his family to a seemingly quiet place, but in reality it is dangerous as he and his wife have a couple of small children and their house is near a busy road. When the family cat dies they bury it in a pet cemetery, but this cemetery is special, as soon the cat returns home, only it does not seem to be the same as before, later the baby of the family succumbs to the inevitable, taking into account what I said previously about the busy road, the case is that when the child dies the father is carried away by despair and decides to bury him in the pet cemetery with the clear intention that he returns, but as happened with the cat the child does indeed return, only it is no longer the same as before, now it is simply sinister.
Un joven médico se muda con su familia a un lugar aparentemente tranquilo, pero en realidad es peligroso ya que él y su esposa tienen un par de hijos pequeños y su casa está cerca de una carretera concurrida. Cuando muere el gato de la familia lo entierran en un cementerio de mascotas, pero este cementerio es especial, ya que pronto el gato vuelve a casa, solo que ya no parece ser el mismo de antes, posteriormente el bebé de la familia sucumbe ante lo inevitable, tomando en cuenta lo que dije previamente sobre la carretera concurrida, el caso es que cuando el niño muere el padre se deja llevar por la desesperación y decide enterrarlo en el cementerio de mascotas con la clara intención de que regrese, pero al igual que sucedió con el gato el niño efectivamente regresa, solo que ya no es el mismo de antes, ahora es simplemente siniestro.
I think it was a very well made film with a good handling of terror, they respected what was established in the book and in fact we could even see a cameo of Stephen King himself in the scene of the burial of the child (he is the priest) the only thing I really did not like (and it was very common in those years) is the cinematography, In fact, in the scene where they bury the cat in the pet cemetery it is almost impossible to see what is happening on screen, the performances were not masterful, except for the mother's performance and the father's performance in the scene I will talk about next.
Pienso que fue una película muy bien lograda con un buen manejo del terror, respetaron loe establecido en el libro y de hecho hasta pudimos ver un cameo del propio Stephen King en la escena del sepelio del niño (es el sacerdote) lo único que realmente no me gustó (y era muy común en esos años) es la fotografía, ya que en su afán por darle un aura opresiva y terrorífica al film oscurecieron de más algunas escenas, de hecho en la escena donde entierran al gato en el cementerio de mascotas casi no es posible ver lo que sucede en pantalla, las actuaciones no estuvieron magistrales, a excepción de la actuación de la madre y la actuación del padre en la escena de la que les hablaré a continuación.
The most iconic scene of this film is undoubtedly the death of the child, without being explicit it is terribly heartbreaking because you can almost feel the helplessness of the parents unable to do anything for the child who is about to die in front of their eyes. Then we see the little shoe spinning around as an infallible resource that gives us to understand what happened to the little boy, in addition to a succession of images that show us his birth and his very short life, which was very happy, all this makes us feel as helpless and emotionally destroyed as the father feels. Then, the scene of the boy's little sister talking to the neighbor while telling him that she is still waiting for her brother to return, while the father listens to it all with an unfathomable expression on his face is absolutely painful.
La escena más icónica de este film es sin dudas la muerte del niño, sin ser explicita resulta terriblemente desgarradora ya que casi puedes palpar la impotencia de los padres al no poder hacer nada por el niño que está a punto de morir frente a sus ojos. Luego vemos el pequeño zapato dando vueltas como recurso infalible que nos da a entender lo que sucedió con el pequeño, además de una sucesión de imágenes que nos muestran su nacimiento y su cortísima vida, la cual fue muy feliz, todo esto hace que nos sintamos tan impotentes y destruidos emocionalmente como se siente el padre. Luego, la escena de la hermanita del niño hablando con el vecino mientras le dice que aún espera que su hermano regreso, mientras el padre escucha todo con una expresión insondable en el rostro es absolutamente dolorosa.
But let's talk now about the most important thing about this film and that is what leads me to participate in this contest, the terror, I think everyone will agree with me, at least all those who have seen this film, that one of the most infallible resources when it comes to frighten the audience in the cinema is to use children, the younger the better, and I think that happens because our brain has a hard time associating children with something dark and sinister, we always associate them with tenderness and innocence, so seeing the scenes of the child in a threatening attitude while chasing his parents is very impressive, besides, I would like to highlight the fact that I find it very curious to know how they achieved those shots where the child's face looks so diabolical, he really was very small and yet he turned out to be a great actor.
Pero hablemos ahora de lo más importante de este film y es lo que me lleva a participar en este concurso, el terror, creo que todos estarán de acuerdo conmigo, al menos todos los que hayan visto este film, en que uno de los recursos más infalibles a la hora de atemorizar a la audiencia en el cine es usar niños, cuanto más pequeños mejor, y creo que eso sucede porque a nuestro cerebro le cuesta asociar a los niños con algo oscuro y siniestro, siempre los asociamos con la ternura y la inocencia, así que ver las escenas del niño en actitud amenazante mientras persigue a sus padres es por demás impresionante, además, me gustaría resaltar el hecho de que me resulta muy curioso saber como lograron esas tomas donde el rostro del niño se ve tan diabólico, de verdad era muy pequeño y aún así resultó ser un gran actor.
Another thing I would like to mention that all Zelda's appearances were impressive for her time, she was scary without being a monster or ghost, she is the disabled sister of Rachel Creed (the mother of the family) she has spinal meningitis and this disease forces her to be bedridden almost all the time, but her appearance is so careless that it is even frightening and it is as if she was a ghost that haunts her sister for the simple fact of feeling abandoned in a certain way by her. In those years when I saw the movie (1989) it was scary to see this woman on screen because they make you think she is some kind of monster, but really, if you put yourself in her place, it must be terrible to suffer from that disease and see yourself relegated and excluded from the family, but she in addition to her appearance, she generated terror because of her erratic behavior.
Otra de las cosas que me gustaría mencionar que todas las apariciones de Zelda fueron impresionantes para su época, ella daba miedo sin ser un monstruo o fantasma, se trata de la hermana discapacitada de Rachel Creed (la madre de la familia) tiene meningitis espinal y esta enfermedad la obliga a estar postrada en una cama casi todo el tiempo, pero su apariencia es tan descuidada que resulta hasta aterradora y es como si fuese un fantasma que asecha a su hermana por el simple hecho de sentirse abandona de cierta manera por ella. En aquellos años cuando vi la película (1989) me daba miedo ver a esta mujer en pantalla porque te hacen pensar que es una especie de monstruo, pero realmente, si te pones en su lugar, debe ser terrible padecer esa enfermedad y verte relegada y excluida de la familia, pero ella además de su apariencia, ella generaba terror debido a su comportamiento errático.
In summary it is a very good movie with a good plot, maybe the visual resources to generate terror did not age so well but it is still a classic worthy of recognition and respect (in my opinion) on the other hand I saw the remake that came out in 2019 (if I remember correctly) but I think it did not do justice to the original version, even though it obviously has better special effects. But anyway, this has been my first participation in the contest, I hope you liked it and of course I invite you all to join this dynamic.
En resumen es una muy buena película con un buen argumento, quizá los recursos visuales para generar terror no envejecieron tan bien pero aún así es un clásico digno de reconocer y respetar (en mi opinión) por otra parte vi el remake que salió en 2019 (si mal no recuerdo) pero creo que no le hizo justicia a la versión original, aún y cuando obviamente tiene mejores efectos especiales. Pero en fin, esta ha sido mi primera participación en el concurso, espero que les haya gustado y desde luego los invito a todos a unirse a esta dinámica.
