The Unborn 2009 (my reaction/review)

When I first saw the title of this movie, I thought it had something to do with an aborted child who ended up seeking revenge to his mother. lol I guess it was one horror story I read when I was younger. A mother aborted her child, few years later, she felt one of her legs is becoming heavier, thus painful. But when she had it checked by a doctor, her leg was perfectly fine. It turned out that it was the baby she aborted years back. It somehow grew, and was constantly clinging to one of her legs. haha It's a funny plot now that I think about it.

Anyway, this movie is different. :)

As you can see in the trailer, it has something to do about twins. One who is alive and the other who wanted to be alive.

It all started in her grandmother's generation. Her grandma and her twin were both alive, but were captured and experimented on by the Nazi.

Her grandma somehow survived, but the other child didn't. A few days later, he came back to life, but he wasn't the same anymore. He was an entirely different entity.

Years later, Casey Beldon (the main character) who is the granddaughter started to have nightmares and perhaps hallucinations of a weird-looking dog and an evil-looking boy with blue eyes.

She was babysitting their neighbor's children that time when Matty (a boy she was taking care of), started to act weird because he was showing his baby sister her own reflection on the mirror. He then attacked Casey with the mirror and told her, "Jumby wants to be born now."

She confided the situation to her friend who was into superstitions and she told her that someone who is below one year old shouldn't see his/her reflection in the mirror because they might die soon.

She suddenly developed heterochromia which the doctor told her is often common among twins. When she asked her dad whether she had a twin or not, his father answered yes, and he would've been called "Jumby" if he were alive.

She experienced a lot of weird things as if something is possessing her. She started seeing things, so she wanted some answers. She later found out that it was the doing of a creature called a "dybbuk". As explained in the movie, a dybbuk is a spirit in the Jewish Mythology. It cannot enter heaven, so it's stuck somewhere in the afterlife to look for a host. Once it found its host, it will try to fulfill the things it failed to accomplish and then finally leave.

It's for you to find out the rest of the story by watching the movie. It's available on Netflix. :)

Personal Thoughts

Well, I'm not really into the exorcism type of horror films because I find them a bit boring, but I like how the concept of this movie included Jewish Mythology. It was nice to learn things about the dybbuk, rabbi, and the like.

I also like her superstitious friend. It's not that I believe in superstitions, but they're interesting to know. There are a lot of superstitions in my country as told by the older generation, though they're slowly dying since people are forgetting them.

The effects and the jump-scares were interesting and I love how eerie the atmosphere becomes when she's with Matty. I guess that child actor deserve to star in more horror films. :)

All in all, I enjoyed the concept except the usual exorcism part. It's just me, really... but there sure are a lot of exciting happenings in the movie. :) While looking for pictures and trailers to share here, I noticed that there's a new movie with the same title. I wonder if it's better than this. Let's find out by watching it once I get the chance. haha

I'll end this here. Thanks for checking it out! Take care and have a great one! <3
