Una de las cosas que más me gustan de las películas, es como logran transportarnos a diferentes épocas y localidades con una facilidad asombrosa. En esta oportunidad, The Last Duel (El Último Duelo en español) nos lleva a Francia de los años 1300 y nos muestra un duelo entre dos escuderos que definirá el destino de ellos dos y un tercero involucrado.
One of the things I like the most about movies is how they manage to transport us to different times and locations with amazing ease. On this occasion, The Last Duel takes us to France in the 1300s and shows us a duel between two squires that will define the fate of the two of them and a third party involved.

Este film dirigido por Ridley Scott es una adaptación del libro "The Last Duel: A true story of trial by combat in Medieval France" donde justamente narran el último duelo reconocido en Francia. Al inicio de la película vemos a una mujer siendo ataviada en un traje negro ceñido a su silueta, alguien totalmente desconocido. Luego nos muestran a dos personajes más, caballeros se podría pensar, en camino a enfrentarse en un duelo como muchas veces hemos visto. Vestidos con sus armaduras, sobre caballos, con escudos y enfrentándose a muerte con lanzas y espadas. Los caballeros son Jean de Carrouges, interpretado por Matt Damon, y el escudero Jacques Le Gris, interpretado por Adam Driver. ¿Quién de los dos ganará el duelo y cuáles serán las consecuencias?
This film directed by Ridley Scott is an adaptation of the book "The Last Duel: A true story of trial by combat in Medieval France" where the last recognized duel in France is narrated. At the beginning of the film we see a woman being dressed in a black suit tight to her silhouette, someone totally unknown. Then we are shown two more characters, knights one would think, on their way to face each other in a duel as we have seen many times before. Dressed in their armor, on horses, with shields and facing each other to the death with spears and swords. The knights are Jean de Carrouges, played by Matt Damon, and Jacques Le Gris, played by Adam Driver. Which of the two will win the duel and what will be the consequences?

Marguerite de Carrouges, interpretada por Jodie Comer, se podría decir que es el eje central de la trama, ya que un acontecimiento que atenta sobre su integridad física y moral desencadena una serie de hechos que poco a poco va definiendo el destino de los escuderos de Carrouges y Le Gris. ¿Qué influencia tendrá sobre ella el resultado del duelo a muerte entre su esposo y Le Gris? Es una excelente pregunta que será respondida al final de la película.
Marguerite de Carrouges, played by Jodie Comer, could be said to be the central axis of the plot, since an event that threatens her physical and moral integrity triggers a series of events that gradually defines the fate of the squires of Carrouges and Le Gris. What influence will the outcome of the duel to the death between her husband and Le Gris have on her? It is an excellent question that will be answered at the end of the film.

Sinceramente, no soy fan de las películas ambientadas en la era Medieval ni nada por el estilo, pero me gustó mucho cómo escribieron la historia y cómo la contaron. Aunque el inicio de la película es realmente una parte del final, explican cómo llegaron ahí desde tres puntos de vista distintos, tres capítulos le dicen ellos: primero la versión de la historia contada desde la perspectiva de Jean de Carrouges, luego la versión de Jacques Le Gris y por último, la versión de Marguerite de Carrouges. ¿Cuál es la verdadera? Ellos mismos lo indican al momento de presentar el capítulo.
Honestly, I'm not a fan of movies set in the Medieval era or anything like that, but I really liked how they wrote the story and how they told it. Although the beginning of the movie is really a part of the ending, they explain how they got there from three different points of view, three chapters they call it: first the version of the story told from the perspective of Jean de Carrouges, then the version of Jacques Le Gris and finally, the version of Marguerite de Carrouges. Which one is the real one? They themselves indicate it at the time of presenting the chapter.

Cuentan con un elenco top. Los ya mencionados Matt Damon, Adam Driver y Jodie Comer, también Ben Affleck interpretando a Pierre d'Alencon, un conde poderoso primo del Soberano Francés. Todos interpretan su papel de maravilla, poniendo un gran esfuerzo en mostrar sus sentimientos dándole un realismo bastante bueno. La amistad entre de Carrouges y Le Gris, que se ve ensombrecida tras una serie de infortunios y acusaciones, termina en odio y resentimiento. La transición de Le Gris de ser un escudero al servicio del Rey a ser la mano derecha del conde d'Alencon y otros hechos son muy interesantes, todos vistos desde tres puntos de vista distintos, lo que le agrega mucho sabor.
They have a top cast. The aforementioned Matt Damon, Adam Driver and Jodie Comer, also Ben Affleck playing Pierre d'Alencon, a powerful count cousin of the French Sovereign. They all play their roles wonderfully, putting a great effort in showing their feelings giving it a pretty good realism. The friendship between de Carrouges and Le Gris, which is overshadowed after a series of misfortunes and accusations, ends in hatred and resentment. Le Gris's transition from being a squire in the King's service to being the Count d'Alencon's right hand man and other events are very interesting, all seen from three different points of view, which adds a lot of flavor.

La película es muy interesante ya que trata también sobre cómo una mujer, a pesar de la posición tan inferior en las que se encontraban en la época Medieval, levantó su voz ante los abusos sin importarle las consecuencias que eso podría traerle. Ya que las mujeres no tenían voz propia, sino que debían hablar a través de sus esposos, Marguerite dependía de convencer a Jean para que la apoyara y denunciar el abuso sufrido que le dejó una huella imborrable de su esencia como ser humano.
The film is very interesting because it is also about how a woman, despite her inferior position in Medieval times, raised her voice in the face of abuse regardless of the consequences. Since women had no voice of their own, but had to speak through their husbands, Marguerite depended on convincing Jean to support her and denounce the abuse she suffered, which left an indelible mark on her essence as a human being.

🗣 Comentarios finales/Final comments 🗣
La película es muy buena de inicio a fin, y no se siente redundante porque no repiten lo mismo una y otra vez, ya que la historia más completa es la del capítulo 1, la versión de Jean de Carrouges, y los otros dos capítulos solo presentaban partes de la historia que eran diferentes a lo narrado previamente.
The movie is very good from start to finish, and it doesn't feel redundant because they don't repeat the same thing over and over again, as the most complete story is the one in chapter 1, Jean de Carrouges' version, and the other two chapters only presented parts of the story that were different from what was previously narrated.

Peleas, sangre, amoríos, obsesión, odio, venganza, frustración, traición... Todo eso lo encontrarás en la película, además de ver la valentía de atreverse a denunciar públicamente un hecho que ninguna o pocas mujeres lo habían hecho antes, solo porque creía que era lo correcto. Se las recomiendo, es muy buena película.
Fights, blood, love affairs, obsession, hatred, revenge, frustration, betrayal? You will find all that in the film, besides seeing the courage of daring to publicly denounce a fact that no or few women had done before, just because she believed it was the right thing to do. I recommend it, it is a very good movie.
