La Quinta Ola
La quinta ola, posiblemente la mayoría la vio, yo la vi hace aproximadamente unos 2 años porque el tráiler y concepto me llamó un poco la atención, quizás también buscaba algo que me gustará más que la películas de Los Juegos del Hambre (no soy muy fan de las películas, pero sí de los libros). Hace poco navegando por Netflix me encontré a esta película y la volví a ver, no me acordaba mucho de ella y la entiendo por qué, está película es mala, muy mala.
The Fifth Wave
The Fifth Wave, possibly most of you saw it, I saw it about 2 years ago because the trailer and concept caught my attention a bit, maybe I was also looking for something I would like more than The Hunger Games movies (I'm not a big fan of the movies, but I am a big fan of the books). Recently surfing Netflix I found this movie and I watched it again, I didn't remember much about it and I understand why, this movie is bad, very bad.

Un poco de historia
Está película está basada en el primer libro con el mismo nombre el cual pertenece a una trilogía de ciencia ficción escrita por Rick Yancey la cual fue lanzada en 2013, tuvo muchísimo éxito y era obvio que sería llevada a la pantalla grande y así sucedió en 2016. Dirigida por Jonathan Blakeson y protagonizada por Chloë Grace Moretz, Nick Robinson, Zackary Arthur, Alex Roe y Tobey Maguire fue el productor (quería decirlo, me pareció curioso).
La historia se centra en un futuro en donde la humanidad es invadida por alienígenas, pero ellos son muy planificados y en vez de invadir de una sola vez, deciden traer olas (catástrofes) al planeta Tierra: La primera ola fue un apagón en todo el planeta, la segunda ola fue la subía del oleaje lo que provoco tsunamis, la tercera ola fue una peste que mataba a muchísimas personas y la cuarta ola es la invasión de los alienígenas transformados en humanos que se encargan de matar a los seres humanos restantes, trate de buscar cual era la quinta ola, pero no encontré la respuesta).
A little bit of history
This movie is based on the first book with the same name which belongs to a science fiction trilogy written by Rick Yancey which was released in 2013, it was very successful and it was obvious that it would be taken to the big screen and so it happened in 2016. Directed by Jonathan Blakeson and starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Nick Robinson, Zackary Arthur, Alex Roe and Tobey Maguire was the producer (I wanted to say it, I found it curious).
The story centers on a future where humanity is invaded by aliens, but they are very planned and instead of invading all at once, they decide to bring waves (catastrophes) to planet Earth: The first wave was a blackout in the whole planet, the second wave was the rise of the swell or that caused tsunamis, the third wave was a plague that killed many, many people and the fourth wave is the invasion of aliens transformed into humans who are in charge of killing the remaining humans, I tried to look for what was the fifth wave, but I did not find the answer).

Cassie es nuestra protagonista, una chica normal sin nada que destacar que logra sobrevivir a las 3 primeras olas y luego de ver morir a sus padres y perder a su hermanito Sam, Cassie deberá rescatar a Sam y sobrevivir a la cuarta ola.
Si otra historia de un futuro post apocalíptica basado en un libro de ciencia ficción adolescente, quiero decir que criticaré la película porque no me leí los libros aunque leí que eran muy buenos. Cabe destacar que la película tuvo muchas críticas negativas y por eso se canceló las demás películas, por lo tanto, la historia está incompleto al menos que leamos los libros.
Cassie is our protagonist, a normal girl with nothing to stand out who manages to survive the first 3 waves and after seeing her parents die and losing her little brother Sam, Cassie must rescue Sam and survive the fourth wave.
If another story of a post apocalyptic future based on a teenage science fiction book, I want to say that I will criticize the movie because I did not read the books although I read that they were very good. It should be noted that the movie had a lot of negative reviews and that is why the other movies were cancelled, therefore, the story is incomplete unless we read the books.

Voy a ser sincera, está película es mala, pero tiene escenas muy buenas. Comenzamos por ejemplo, con la primera escena de Cassie entrando a un Supermercado (lo típico) en donde se encuentra a una persona y lo mata por una confusión, un buen comienzo en donde nos muestra la base de lo que tratará la película. Lástima que luego de esa escena volvemos al pasado a ver la vida de nuestra protagonista.
Allí aprendemos que nuestra protagonista es la típica chica adolescente, bonita, estadounidense promedio, sus aficiones son vivir la vida y ser novia de Ben, el chico que le gusta. La primera impresión de la protagonista ya es un poco decepcionante porque a simple viste no tiene nada que la caracterice o la haga interesante, además de que es buena hermana y es bonita.

Review
I'm going to be honest, this movie is bad, but it has very good scenes. We start, for example, with the first scene of Cassie entering a Supermarket (the typical) where she meets a person and kills him because of a confusion, a good beginning where she shows us the base of what the movie will be about. Too bad that after that scene we go back to the past to see the life of our protagonist.
There we learn that our protagonist is the typical teenage girl, pretty, average American, her hobbies are living life and being a girlfriend of Ben, the boy she likes. The first impression of the protagonist is already a bit disappointing because at first glance she has nothing to characterize her or make her interesting, besides the fact that she is a good sister and she is pretty.
Luego de decirnos que la protagonista es una chica normal, tenemos la llegada de las cuatro olas y debo ser sincera, toda está escena es muy buena, nos da una sensación de desespero y desesperanza y para mí, fue una buena forma de cambiar el estilo de la película. Durante la tercera ola muere la madre de Cassie debido a una pandemia, allí el resto de la familia decide moverse y llegan a un bosque en donde hay varios sobrevivientes.

Estás escenas te ponen en la posición de los protagonistas y la historia se torna mucho más interesante, hay que admitirlo, el inicio es malo, pero luego se vuelve interesante. Lo que me hizo pensar en que la historia nos traería un personaje poco interesante como protagonista, pero que a medida de que avanza la película y deba enfrentarse a diversos desafíos, podríamos tener una evolución.
Luego llegan los militares con autos y energía a pesar de que no había en primer lugar, pero le prometen a todos una salvación, aunque primero salvaran a los niños, obligando al padre tener que quedarse aunque a Cassie no le gusta la idea. Luego el hermanito hace algo muy inteligente, pelear porque se le olvido su peluche, lo que hace que Cassie debe ir a buscarlo, pero vaya, el autobús se fue.

After telling us that the protagonist is a normal girl, we have the arrival of the four waves and I must be honest, this whole scene is very good, it gives us a sense of despair and hopelessness and for me, it was a good way to change the style of the film. During the third wave Cassie's mother dies due to a pandemic, there the rest of the family decides to move and they reach a forest where there are several survivors.
These scenes put you in the position of the main characters and the story becomes much more interesting, admittedly, the beginning is bad, but then it becomes interesting. Which made me think that the story would bring us an uninteresting character as the main character, but as the movie progresses and he has to face several challenges, we could have an evolution.
Then the military arrives with cars and energy even though there was none in the first place, but they promise everyone a salvation, although they will save the children first, forcing the father to have to stay even though Cassie doesn't like the idea. Then the little brother does something very clever, he fights because he forgot his stuffed animal, which makes Cassie have to go get it, but boy, the bus is gone.

Por lo que, Cassie decide ir a buscar a su papá, pero adivinen, los guardias mataron a todos los que se quedaron, pero nos enteramos que los extraterrestres los cuales se llaman “los otros” tienen la capacidad de invadir cuerpos humanos. Está escena también es interesante y ahora tendríamos dos historias: el hermanito que lo llevan a una base militar para ser entrenado para eliminar a los otros antes de que comience la quinta ola y Cassie que está sola allí afuera y deberá encontrar a su hermano, por suerte, tiene una pistola.
Con esto tenemos en peligro a ambos protagonistas, Cassie en un mundo en donde no puede confiar en nadie y Sam (el hermanito) que está en riesgo a cada minuto además de que los guardias mataron a los demás humanos, lo que es un poco sospechoso. Aunque la protagonista es un gran estereotipo, la trama está bastante interesante, la protagonista puede tener un gran desarrollo y evolucionar en este mundo solo por ir a buscar a su hermano y por otro lado tenemos niños y adolescentes entrenando para pelear contra los otros.

So, Cassie decides to go look for her dad, but guess what, the guards killed everyone who stayed, but we learn that the aliens which are called "the others" have the ability to invade human bodies. This scene is also interesting and now we would have two stories: the little brother who is taken to a military base to be trained to eliminate the others before the fifth wave begins and Cassie who is alone out there and must find her brother, luckily, she has a gun.
With this we have both protagonists in danger, Cassie in a world where she can't trust anyone and Sam (the little brother) who is at risk every minute plus the guards killed the other humans, which is a bit suspicious. Although the protagonist is a great stereotype, the plot is quite interesting, the protagonist can have a great development and evolve in this world just for going to look for her brother and on the other hand we have children and teenagers training to fight against the others.

Hay mucho potencial para crear una película muy buena, no me leí el libro, pero de seguro está muy bueno, pero potencial y ejecución no son sinónimos, es decir, puedes tener una gran historia en las manos, pero depende de la ejecución para poder explotar todo el potencial, lastimosamente, está película no la tuvo. Y quiero decir algo, puedes tener una buena historia, pero si lo desarrollas mal, no importa la historia, la película será mala, pero por el contrario, puedes tener una historia sencilla, pero una buena ejecución y desarrollo y terminar haciendo una buena película.
La última buena escena es en una autopista en donde le disparan a Cassie y parece que morirá pronto hasta que cambia de escena y aparece en una habitación oscura con otro hombre que la ha estado cuidando mientras estaba inconsciente y por un momento pensé que la protagonista ahora estaba secuestrada por una mala persona, pero no es así y aquí la película se pone muy mala.

There is a lot of potential to create a very good movie, I didn't read the book, but for sure it is very good, but potential and execution are not synonymous, that is, you can have a great story in your hands, but it depends on the execution to exploit all the potential, unfortunately, this movie didn't have it. And I want to say something, you can have a good story, but if you develop it badly, no matter the story, the movie will be bad, but on the contrary, you can have a simple story, but a good execution and development and end up making a good movie.
The last good scene is on a highway where Cassie is shot and it looks like she will die soon until the scene changes and she appears in a dark room with another man who has been taking care of her while she was unconscious and for a moment I thought the protagonist was now kidnapped by a bad person, but she is not and here the movie gets really bad.

No entiendo cuál es la necesidad de meter una relación amorosa a la fuerza en una película que funciona muy bien sin una, al menos en Los Juegos del Hambre la relación no está metida a la fuerza. Esto me molesta porque hace que la película cambie de rumbo y ahora tengamos una historia de amor en un mundo peligroso. Mientras que por otro lado, la historia de Sam se cae también, tenemos que en su grupo está Ben, el chico que Cassie estaba enamorada y otra chica que es el estereotipo de la chica ruda que puede hacer las cosas por su propia cuenta.
Ambas historia se vuelven malas al mismo tiempo. La historia de Cassie cambio de rumbo y ahora tenemos un drama amoroso que no digo que este mal que metan algo de romance, pero no a la fuerza, además, tenemos en cuenta que los otros pueden invadir cuerpos humanos por lo que, no es seguro confiar en este hombre. Incluso, tenemos la escena de Cassie asesinando a un hombre que parecía que la iba a matar, pero en realidad no. No confías en un hombre moribundo, pero si en un joven sano y que está guapo (además de que descubrimos que la siguió por un tiempo).

I don't understand what the need is to force a love relationship into a movie that works just fine without one, at least in The Hunger Games the relationship is not forced in. This bothers me because it makes the movie change course and now we have a love story in a dangerous world. While on the other hand, Sam's story falls flat as well, we have that in her group is Ben, the guy Cassie had a crush on and another girl who is the stereotypical tough girl who can do things on her own.
Both stories turn bad at the same time. Cassie's story changed course and now we have a love drama which I'm not saying it's wrong to throw in some romance, but not forcefully, plus, we have to take into account that the others can invade human bodies so, it's not safe to trust this guy. We even have the scene of Cassie killing a man who looked like he was going to kill her, but not really. You don't trust a dying man, but you do trust a healthy young man who is handsome (plus we find out he followed her around for a while).
Ahora tenemos a Evan uniéndose al viaje para cuidar a Cassie, llevarla a la base militar y para crear romance entre los dos, mientras que en la base militar todo anda normal, solo que el grupo está mejorando y la chica nueva se adapta. Está película se podría resumir en un buen concepto, pero que se deja vencer por los clichés del género. Está película no le hace justicia a todos los puntos buenos que tiene y lo de la base militar, se volvió aburrido la historia. Diré que quisiera ver está película con una mejor dirección y podría ser buena, quitando el drama amoroso, claro.

La película no se permite crear un drama amoroso decente, por lo que, la única manera de demostrar que los protagonistas se aman es teniendo sexo. En esta película planean tener personajes femeninos fuertes, pero que caen sumisas antes un hombre guapo.
Volviendo a la base militar, tenemos que a los niños lo llevan ahora si a cazar extraterrestre, estos tienen un casco que los hace diferenciar entre los extraterrestres y los humanos, pero como son niños y adolescentes, obviamente lo arruinan con estupideces, pero descubrimos algo interesante, resulta que los de la base militar son los otros y entrenaron todo este tiempo a los niños para matar a otros seres humanos, creo que era bastante obvio teniendo en cuenta que estos mismos guardias mataron a los adultos hace rato, pero bueno, ellos no saben eso.

Now we have Evan joining the trip to take care of Cassie, to take her to the military base and to create romance between the two, while at the military base everything is going normal, only that the group is getting better and the new girl is adapting. This movie could be summed up as a good concept, but it is defeated by the clichés of the genre. This movie doesn't do justice to all the good points it has and the military base, the story got boring. I will say that I would like to see this movie with better direction and it could be good, minus the love drama of course.
The movie doesn't allow itself to create a decent love drama, so, the only way to show that the main characters love each other is to have sex. In this movie they plan to have strong female characters, but who fall submissive before a handsome man.
Going back to the military base, the kids are now taken to hunt aliens, they have a helmet that makes them differentiate between aliens and humans, but as they are kids and teenagers, obviously they ruin it with stupid things, but we discover something interesting, it turns out that the military base are the others and they trained the kids all this time to kill other humans, I think it was pretty obvious considering that these same guards killed the adults a while ago, but well, they don't know that.

Bueno, al final resulta que la quinta ola eran los humanos trabajando con los otros (se me había olvidado de ese detalle). Este giro está interesante, pero está mal colocado y ocurre en media película, por lo que, no hay ni tiempo para desarrollarlo y le quita la tensión y el misterio de lo que queda de película.
Para ser un giro así hay que tener desarrollo, pudieron haber lanzado pistas durante el camino para poder sospechar de los guardias y como si no fuera sido muy evidente, resulta que Evan también es un extraterrestre que se enamoró de Cassie, no sé qué se esperaba Cassie, pero Evan es bueno y salvó a Cassie de ser asesinada en la autopista, a este punto la película cayó en lo más bajo.
Cassie se aleja de Evan por fin y se encuentra con la guardia y está mata a algunos cuantos guardias que para ser extraterrestres no son muy poderosos. Todo se descontrola, una pelea entre los humanos y los otros y es un buen momento de traer a Evan para hacer un sacrificio haciendo explotar toda la base y salvando a todos y por fin, parece que muere.

Well, in the end it turns out that the fifth wave was the humans working with the others (I had forgotten that detail). This twist is interesting, but it is poorly placed and happens in the middle of the movie, so there is no time to develop it and it takes away the tension and mystery of the rest of the movie.
To be a twist like that you have to have development, they could have thrown clues along the way to be able to suspect the guards and as if it was not very obvious, it turns out that Evan is also an alien who fell in love with Cassie, I do not know what Cassie expected, but Evan is good and saved Cassie from being killed on the highway, at this point the film fell to the lowest.
Cassie finally gets away from Evan and meets the guard and he is killing a few guards who for aliens are not very powerful. Everything gets out of control, a fight between the humans and the others and it's a good time to bring Evan in to make a sacrifice by blowing up the whole base and saving everyone and finally, it looks like he dies.

Conclusión
La Quinta Ola es una película que tiene un excelente concepto, tuvo muchas posibilidades de hacer algo bueno y tuvo una buena intención, pero que no supo cómo manejar todo eso y construir una historia decente dejándose llevar por todo lo malo que tiene este tipo de historias, pudo tomar un camino diferente, pero no, se fue por lo más fácil para complacer al público femenino preadolescente.
Conclusion
The Fifth Wave is a movie that has an excellent concept, it had many possibilities to do something good and it had a good intention, but it didn't know how to handle all that and build a decent story letting itself be carried away by all the bad things that this kind of stories have, it could have taken a different path, but no, it went for the easiest way to please the pre-teen female audience.
