And falling back into my vicious circle of the animation world, here I bring you one that, for its time (and perhaps still), was miscast as a children's film. The obvious surprise in the theaters themselves, abounded. It was very strange and “fanciful”, even for children, who clearly didn't understand much (or anything) and were left with only what they saw, thus leaving it in oblivion. So, first of all, this animated film is NOT CHILDREN'S FILM. Coraline is a stop-motion animated film, a dark fantasy directed by Henry Selick (same director of Jim and The Giant Peach, another 90's animation gem) and is an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's graphic novel. It deals with deep themes mixing a bit of horror and occultism, but it also has an immense psychological background; so no, it is not at all childish or family friendly (unless your children are horror-loving “weirdos” and understand certain things, like yours truly at that age). By the way, this film was re-released in August of this year, to celebrate its 15th anniversary, with a remastered 3D version.
Y cayendo de nuevo en mi circulo vicioso del mundo de la animación, aquí les traigo uno que, para su momento (y quizás aún), fue mal vista como una película infantil. La obvia sorpresa en las mismas salas de cines, abundó. Era muy extraña y “fantasiosa”, incluso para los niños que, claramente no entendieron mucho (o nada) y se quedaron solo con lo que vieron, dejándola así en el olvido. Así que, antes que nada, este film animado NO ES INFANTIL. Coraline es una película animada con stop-motion, una fantasía oscura dirigida por Henry Selick (mismo director de Jim y El Durazno Gigante, otra joya de la animación de los 90) y es una adaptación de la novela gráfica de Neil Gaiman. Trata temas profundos mezclando un poco el horror y ocultismo, pero también tiene un trasfondo psicológico inmenso; así que no, no es para nada infantil ni familiar (a menos que sus niños sean unos “raritos” amantes del horror y entiendan ciertas cosas, como su servidora a esa edad). Por cierto, este film se reestrenó en agosto de este año, para celebrar sus 15 añitos, con una versión remasterizada en 3D.
Argument.
We follow the story of Coraline Jones who, together with her parents, move as tenants to a strange house where, after being so far away from everything and bored, Coraline finds a door that transports her to a distorted world that gradually becomes a horror for her.
Argumento.
Seguimos la historia de Coraline Jones que, en conjunto con sus padres, se mudan como inquilinos a una extraña casa en donde, tras estar tan apartada de todo y aburrirse, Coraline encuentra una puerta que la trasporta a un mundo distorsionado que poco a poco se convierte en un horror para ella.
Secluded.
Coraline lives and feels ignored by her parents (who are quite hateful, by the way), so she spends the rainy days exploring the strange house and its surroundings. While exploring, she finds a doll identical to her, but with buttons instead of eyes; little Coraline becomes her adventure companion.
Apartada.
Coraline vive y se siente ignorada por sus padres (que son bien odiosos, por cierto), por eso pasa los días lluviosos explorando la extraña casa y sus alrededores. Mientras exploraba, encuentra una muñeca idéntica a ella, pero con botones en vez de ojos; la pequeña Coraline se convierte en su compañera de aventuras.
She smells like a rat.
Every time Coraline travels to the other world and lives with her “other parents”, everything is perfect and wonderful. The black cat several times warns her about the consequences of the decisions she makes and tells her metaphors of life and the complexities (obviously she doesn't take them into account because she doesn't understand them clearly). There is also Wybie, grandson of the owner of the house, he seems to know things, but he doesn't say them directly to Coraline because his grandmother forbids him to. So everyone seems to have something to say, but they don't argue enough to stop Coraline from being so stubborn. By the time she figures it out, it's too late, her “other mother” is a witch who wants to sew buttons on her eyes and turn her into her “doll”.
Huele a rata.
Cada vez que Coraline viaja al otro mundo y convive con sus “otros padres”, todo es perfecto y maravilloso. El gato negro varias veces le advierte sobre las consecuencias de las decisiones que toma y le dice metáforas de la vida y las complejidades (obvio no las toma en cuenta porque no las entiende claramente). También esta Wybie, nieto de la dueña de la casa, parece saber cosas, pero no se las dice directamente a Coraline porque su abuela se lo prohíbe. Así que todos parecen tener algo que decir, pero no argumentan lo suficiente para que Coraline deje de ser tan testaruda. Ya para cuando ella se da cuenta, es muy tarde, su “otra madre” es una bruja que quiere coserle botones en los ojos y se convierta en su “muñeca”.
Obviously, the first time I saw it, I loved it because of its darkness and because I understood Coraline a little bit, but I still thought she was actually schizophrenic or something, and the more I got interested in that film and kept watching it; every time I did, I understood more and other things came to light, which surprised me a lot. Everything in the film is a hidden message.
Obviamente, la primera vez que la vi, la amé por su oscuridad y porque entendía un poco a Coraline, pero aun así creía que ella en realidad era esquizofrénica o algo parecido, y más me interesé por ese film y lo seguí viendo; cada que lo hacía, entendía más y otras cosas salían a la luz, lo cual me sorprendió mucho. Todo en el film es un mensaje oculto.
Searching for identity.
A child at last, Coraline searches for her place in the world and, of course, with support and guidance from her parents. Faced with a lack of attention and love, she “flees” to the “other world”, looking for that validation she needed in the real world.
Buscando la identidad.
Niña al fin, Coraline busca su lugar en el mundo y, por supuesto, con apoyo y guía de sus padres. Ante la falta de atención y amor, “huye” al “otro mundo”, buscando esa validación que necesitaba en el mundo real.
The others.
We see “the other neighbors” as the reflection of Coralines' insecurities and fears, quite the opposite, of “her other parents”. It is a totally opposite parallel world where Coraline's desires and terrors are exposed.

Vemos a “los otros vecinos” como el reflejo de las inseguridades y miedos de Coralines, todo lo contrario, a “sus otros padres”. Es un mundo paralelo totalmente opuesto en donde se exponen los deseos y terrores de Coraline.
Puppets.
The “other mother” is the representation of control. As she wants to sew on Coraline's buttons, she will become a sweet and obedient child to all the requirements of her “other mother”. A clear message of manipulation and control that can exist as a family dynamic, threatening Coraline's developing identity.
Marionetas.
La “otra madre” es la representación del control. Al ella querer coserle los botones a Coraline, se convertirá en una niña dulce y obediente a todos los requerimientos de su “otra madre”. Mensaje claro de manipulación y control que puede existir como dinámica familiar, atentando contra la identidad, apenas en desarrollo, de Coraline.
Coraline is a work rich in symbolism and psychological meaning, I could go on and on analyzing it, but then I'll take away your curiosity. The narrative not only entertains, but also invites reflection on deep themes such as identity, loneliness, and the struggle for control in a world that often seems threatening, especially to children. Its exploration of the duality of being human and the complexity of family relationships make it a powerful story that resonates with audiences of all ages. -Isa, but at the beginning you said it wasn't children's- Yes, just because it's not children's, doesn't mean it shouldn't be watched by children, just that they should take more time to explain these kinds of plots. Who knows? Maybe they even understand more things than you thought they would.
Coraline es una obra rica en simbolismo y significado psicológico, podría seguir y no parar de analizarla, pero luego les quito la curiosidad. La narrativa no solo entretiene, sino que también invita a reflexionar sobre temas profundos como la identidad, la soledad y la lucha por el control en un mundo que a menudo parece amenazante, sobre todo para los niños. Su exploración de la dualidad del ser humano y la complejidad de las relaciones familiares la convierten en una historia poderosa que resuena con audiencias de todas las edades. -Isa, pero al principio dijiste que no era infantil- Sí, que no sea infantil, no significa que no deban verlo los niños, solo que deberían tomarse más el tiempo para explicarles este tipo de tramas. ¿Quién sabe? A lo mejor e incluso entienden más cosas de las que ustedes pensaban.
On the other hand, the production work and construction of each character and structure is sublime. The details of the digital visual effects, gives it that more stylized touch, as if it were a dream. Ditto with the soundtrack, everything was meticulously orchestrated to exalt any experience that, in itself, is already very good. Just like enjoying these days of Halloween with a couple of pizzas. And I think it goes without saying, but if you ask me, I will answer as always: “If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have seen it, see it again, you can't miss anything”.
Por otra parte, el trabajo de producción y construcción de cada personaje y estructura, es sublime. Los detalles de los efectos visuales digitales, le da ese toque más estilizado, como si de un sueño se tratara. Ídem con la banda sonora, todo fue minuciosamente orquestado para exaltar toda experiencia que, de por sí, ya es muy buena. Justo como disfrutar en estos días de Halloween con par de pizzas. Y creo que está de más, pero si me lo preguntan, les responderé como siempre: “Sino la han visto, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene pérdida de nada”.
