[ESP] | [ENG] — ¡Bienvenido al mundo de las Llaves Mágicas!: "Locke & Key", Temporadas 1 y 2 (reseña sin spoilers).

For a long time I had on my to-do list to do a review on a Netflix series that I had liked quite a bit and that kept me during the quarantine, literally, glued to the screen, it is about: Locke & Key. I understand that this series was not very well received by critics and many of the viewers did not like it too much either since, at least in the first season, the episodes lacked a little of the essence of the horror genre that I liked so much of this story, but to understand what I mean by the latter better read on.

Locke & Key es una serie de "terror" y fantasía basada en la serie de cómics del mismo nombre y que fueron creados por Joe Hill (hijo de Stephen King) y Gabriel Rodríguez. Luego de varios intentos frustrados, como la adaptación del año 2011 rechazada por Fox, esta serie de comics logró ser por fin llevada a la pantalla chica de la mano de la plataforma de streaming Netflix, estrenándose su primera temporada durante el 2020.

En la primera temporada, se nos presenta a Nina Locke y a sus tres hijos: Tyler, Kinsey y Bode, quienes se trasladan desde Seattle, Washington a Matheson, Massachusetts en un intento por intentar rehacer sus vidas luego del traumático asesinato de Rendell Locke (el cabecilla de la familia) a manos de su ex alumno Sam Lesser. Nina y sus hijos se mudan a la antigua y enigmática mansión donde Rendell vivió durante toda su infancia y adolescencia: “Keyhouse”, el hogar ancestral de la familia Locke. Al llegar a la mansión, los chicos comienzan a descubrir que algo extraño ocurre dentro de ella y que, en definitiva, esa no es una casa común y corriente pues en cada rincón de ella se encuentran escondidas una serie de llaves que tienen la particular característica de abrir puertas hacia otras realidades y que pueden terminar resultando, para quien las use, un camino hacia mundos realmente mágicos o simplemente un camino hacia la total perdición.

Locke & Key is a series of "horror" and fantasy based on the series of comics of the same name, created by Joe Hill (son of Stephen King) and Gabriel Rodríguez. After several frustrated attempts, such as the 2011 adaptation rejected by Fox, this comic book series was finally brought to the small screen by the hand of the streaming platform Netflix, premiering its first season during 2020.

In the first season, we are introduced to Nina Locke and her three children: Tyler, Kinsey and Bode, who move from Seattle, Washington to Matheson, Massachusetts in an attempt to try to rebuild their lives after the traumatic murder of Rendell Locke (the head of the family) at the hands of his former student Sam Lesser. Nina and her children move into the old, enigmatic mansion where Rendell lived throughout his childhood and adolescence: "Keyhouse ", the ancestral home of the Locke family. Upon arriving at the mansion, the children begin to discover that something strange is happening inside it and that, in short, this is not an ordinary house because in every corner of it are hidden a series of keys that have the particular characteristic of opening doors to other realities and that can end up being, for those who use them, a path to truly magical worlds or simply a path to total perdition.

Las protagonistas de toda esta serie son, sin duda alguna, las llaves mágicas quienes se encargan de conferir parte del encanto a cada uno de los episodios. Cada llave tiene un “poder” especial que se hace evidente al usarla en la cerradura adecuada. Una de estas llaves te permite entrar a la mente de otra persona, otra llave te permite adquirir una súper-fuerza e incluso, la llave fantasma, permite que tu cuerpo se separe de tu alma. Como verán los “poderes” de estas llaves son alucinantes y, por si fuera poco, los hermanos tienen la habilidad de descubrirlas fácilmente ya que logran percibir el “susurro” de ellas…sí, es algo así como que las llaves les hablaran a los chicos para poder ser encontradas.

El final de la primera temporada nos deja una gran revelación y también nos hace entender que el clan Locke no ha logrado zafarse por completo del peligro. Durante la segunda temporada el misterio que ocultan las llaves y la intriga detrás de las acciones del villano principal siguen siendo el foco principal de toda esta historia, sin embargo, en esta segunda tanda de capítulos, la serie se vuelve un poco más oscura y cargada de acción. Además, se nos cuenta también el origen detrás de toda la magia que se esconde dentro de la Keyhouse y también se introduce un nuevo personaje que desempeñará el papel del villano en la tercera entrega que está por estrenarse a finales de este año 2022.

The protagonists of this entire series are, without a doubt, the magic keys, which are responsible for conferring part of the charm to each of the episodes. Each key has a special "power" that becomes evident when used in the right lock. One of these keys allows you to enter another person's mind, another key allows you to acquire super-strength and even, the ghost key, allows your body to separate from your soul. As you can see the "powers" of these keys are mind-blowing and, if that wasn't enough, the brothers have the ability to discover them easily since they manage to perceive the "whisper " of them...yes, it's something like the keys talk to the boys in order to be found.

The end of the first season leaves us with a big revelation and also makes us understand that the Locke clan has not managed to completely escape from danger. During the second season the mystery hidden by the keys and the intrigue behind the actions of the main villain continue to be the main focus of this story, however, in this second batch of chapters, the series becomes a little darker and action-packed. In addition, we are also told the origin behind all the magic hidden inside the Keyhouse and a new character is also introduced who will play the role of the villain in the third installment which is set to premiere at the end of this year 2022.

Yo no he leído la saga de comics en la cual está inspirada esta serie pero, por lo que he indagado de muchas fuentes, al parecer, el cómic es realmente oscuro y no intenta suavizar la maldad, por lo que las escenas sanguinarias y brutales terminan siendo realmente sanguinarias y brutales, cosa que no ocurre en la adaptación de Netflix pues aquí se ha optado por “disminuir” el componente tenebroso de la historia original, creando de esta forma una serie un poco más amigable y para todo público. Es la desaparición de la tensión, el terror y el dolor de la obra original lo que ha causado cierta insatisfacción en parte de los espectadores, aquellos que son fieles a los cómics. Sin embargo, como ya mencioné, al no haber leído estos cómics básicamente no tengo un punto de comparación y sólo puedo basar esta reseña en base a lo que vi durante los capítulos de estas dos temporadas. En principio, la idea de una casa repleta de llaves mágicas que poseen ciertos “poderes” especiales a quien las usa me pareció algo sumamente increíble e interesante, a mí realmente me gusta la fantasía y todo lo “raro” en las tramas, por tal motivo creo que pude perdonar un poco lo cliché de toda la historia entorno al drama familiar que se nos plasma aquí. Sin embargo, a pesar de que la primera temporada sí me gustó, siento que pudieron haberle sacado un poco más el jugo a la historia.

Algunos fragmentos de los episodios de esta primera entrega se me hacían un poco tediosos, por la misma razón del drama familiar. Aunque puedo comprender que el hecho de que se nos muestre cómo la familia intenta asumir y lidiar con la muerte del padre y esposo (muy a la manera de cada quien) juega también un papel importante dentro del desarrollo de la trama, pues al llegar a la segunda temporada se puede notar esa evolución que han tenido los personajes y cómo las difíciles situaciones por las que han atravesado los han hecho madurar y aprender a lidiar con el dolor que te genera la pérdida de un ser querido.

En la primera temporada surgen muchas preguntas y no todos los personajes son desarrollados por completo como es el caso de Duncan, el tío de los chicos y el hermano menor del fallecido Rendell Locke. Yo diría que el tío Duncan es uno de los personajes más enigmáticos, pues su aversión hacia la mansión termina causando cierta curiosidad y, más aún, es de extrañar que no tenga muy claro parte de sus recuerdos de infancia dentro de la casa. No es hasta la segunda temporada que el personaje de Duncan toma más relevancia y termina siendo una pieza importante del rompecabezas que permitirá ganar la batalla en contra del enemigo.

I have not read the comic saga in which this series is inspired but, from what I have inquired from many sources, apparently, the comic is really dark and does not try to soften the evil, so the bloody and brutal scenes end up being really bloody and brutal, something that does not happen in the Netflix adaptation because here it has been chosen to "decrease" the dark component of the original story, thus creating a series a little more friendly and for all audiences. It is the disappearance of the tension, terror and pain of the original work that has caused certain dissatisfaction in part of the viewers, those who are faithful to the comics. However, as I mentioned, not having read these comics I basically have no point of comparison and can only base this review based on what I saw during the episodes of these two seasons. In principle, the idea of a house full of magic keys that possess certain special "powers" to whoever uses them seemed to me something extremely incredible and interesting, I really like fantasy and everything "weird" in the plots, for that reason I think I could forgive a little bit the cliché of the whole story around the family drama that is captured here. However, even though I did like the first season, I feel that they could have taken a little more out of the story.

Some parts of the episodes of this first installment were a bit tedious for me, for the same reason of the family drama. Although I can understand that the fact that we are shown how the family tries to assume and deal with the death of the father and husband (very much in their own way) also plays an important role in the development of the plot, because when you get to the second season you can notice that evolution that the characters have had and how the difficult situations they have gone through have made them mature and learn to deal with the pain that the loss of a loved one generates.

A lot of questions arise in the first season and not all the characters are fully developed as is the case with Duncan, the boys' uncle and younger brother of the late Rendell Locke. I would say that Uncle Duncan is one of the most enigmatic characters, as his aversion towards the mansion ends up causing some curiosity and, more to the point, it's surprising that he's not very clear about some of his childhood memories inside the house. It is not until the second season that Duncan's character becomes more relevant and ends up being an important piece of the puzzle that will allow him to win the battle against the enemy.

La segunda temporada, sin duda alguna, fue mi favorita pues la historia se torna más interesante y hay mucha más acción desde el principio, sin mencionar que también hacemos un pequeño viaje al pasado, para conocer el origen de toda la magia que envuelven a las llaves. También veremos la muerte de uno de los personajes con el que empatizamos poco a poco, sobre todo en esta segunda temporada…sí, algo así a lo Game of Thrones. Además, ya no nos enfrentaremos a un villano, sino a dos que al final terminan traicionándose uno al otro básicamente por tener intereses diferentes. Uno de estos villanos es un tanto especial y por lo menos a mí me encantaba cada vez que aparecía en pantalla, tenía una especie de luz maligna que logra cautivarte pues logra capturar la esencia de un villano realmente malvado, de esos que te engañan y te hacen pensar que no es capaz de hacer algo tan atroz, pero la verdad es que podría llegar a hacer cosas inimaginables con tal de lograr su objetivo.

Otro de los motivos por el cual la segunda temporada me gustó mucho más que la primera, es que la trama ya no se centra únicamente en tratar de vencer al villano, algo que podría resultar algo tedioso, sino que también se hace bastante hincapié en la estrecha relación que existe entre la magia y el tiempo. Los hermanos se enfrentarán a una de las tristes desventajas que tiene el hecho de crecer y madurar, pues desde siempre en la serie se ha dejado claro que los adultos no pueden recordar la magia. Esto hace que de cierta forma la serie tenga un toque más especial y se asemeja a ese cambio en nuestra mentalidad que existe durante el transcurso de nuestra vida, pues no es mentira que durante la infancia solemos ser un poco más soñadores y tendemos a creer en lo mágico pero, a medida que vamos creciendo, dejamos de creer en todo eso y nos damos cuenta cómo es la vida realmente.

The second season, without a doubt, was my favorite because the story becomes more interesting and there is much more action from the beginning, not to mention that we also take a little trip to the past, to know the origin of all the magic that surrounds the keys. We will also see the death of one of the characters with whom we empathize little by little, especially in this second season...yeah, kind of like Game of Thrones. Also, we will no longer face one villain, but two that in the end end up betraying each other basically because they have different interests. One of these villains is somewhat special and at least I loved every time he appeared on screen, he had a kind of evil light that manages to captivate you because he manages to capture the essence of a really evil villain, one of those who deceive you and make you think that he is not capable of doing something so atrocious, but the truth is that he could do unimaginable things to achieve his goal.

Another reason why I liked the second season much more than the first, is that the plot no longer focuses solely on trying to defeat the villain, something that could be somewhat tedious, but also places a lot of emphasis on the close relationship between magic and time. The brothers will face one of the sad disadvantages of growing up and maturing, as it has always been made clear in the series that adults cannot remember magic. This somehow makes the series have a more special touch and resembles that change in our mentality that exists during the course of our lives, because it is no lie that during childhood we tend to be a little more dreamy and we tend to believe in magic but, as we grow up, we stop believing in all that and we realize what life is really like.

Luego de ver la segunda temporada me recuperé de esa sensación que me había dejado la primera temporada en cuanto a que se podía explotar mucho más la serie. Definitivamente Locke & Key no es una serie que todos disfrutarían ya que puede que a algunos les resulte demasiado sosa pero créanme, la historia vale la pena. Eso sí, yo no la catalogaría como una serie de "horror" o de "fantasía gótica", más bien la colocaría dentro de una categoría de fantasía juvenil algo parecido al concepto de Stranger Things. Sin embargo, la serie me ha gustado un montón y ha llegado a, de cierta forma, cumplir con mis expectativas. Sería interesante leer el cómic en algún momento para tener una especie de comparativa...creo que no estaría demás.

After watching the second season I recovered from that feeling that the first season had left me with in terms of that the series could be exploited much more. Locke & Key**_ is definitely not a series that everyone would enjoy as some may find it too bland but believe me, the story is worth it. Mind you, I wouldn't categorize it as a "horror" or "gothic fantasy" series, I would rather place it into a youth fantasy category somewhat similar to the Stranger Things concept. However, I liked the series a ton and it has come to, in a way, live up to my expectations. It would be interesting to read the comic at some point to have some sort of comparison...I think it wouldn't hurt.
