Haven't you ever been on the side of the criminal in solving some crimes? In this case you end up doing it, and it's not because the protagonist is Mel Gibson.
This movie, which was released in 2012, first to be shown on video on demand services, was also written by Gibson, who after a rather turbulent time in his personal life, had been very low profile.
The story begins with a chase right in the area where the border wall between USA and Mexico is located, and in an attempt to evade justice, after a while, Gibson at the wheel decides to pass the wall with everything and car, not counting on the fact that the Mexican authorities were also waiting for him.
In this part we see how the internal corruption is interwoven, and although the American police want to take him away, when they are on Mexican soil they are the ones who take Gibson and his wounded partner, who dies and is cremated, while the "gringo" is taken to a prison called the pueblito, which looks more like a villa (poor neighborhood) than a prison.
Depicting the underworld of living in a Latin American prison is always based on clichés: squalor, heat, lack of basic services and violence. But in the small town we see what is intuited to happen, but not said openly: stores, preferences, traffic and even conjugal visits improvised in tents located in the common courtyard.
In "Get the Gringo" they go beyond showing whether the inmates are guilty or not, they want to present the background of each of the protagonists and what are the reasons that move them to act in that way.
A phrase that I liked and that in the background makes you change the perspective of Mel's character, is when he confesses about his first entry into prison, with only 14 years old, because when he saw the abuse of his father against his mother he hit him, but his "only mistake was that I did not kill him". You may think I'm justifying him, but by giving that context to the character, we see not only that he is not acting out of vanity, but out of a need to save himself.
Likewise, the scene when the mother of the little boy who shares the lead role with "Gringo" is tortured, shows us that even though she is a criminal, her role as a mother is as strong or stronger than that of anyone who engages in lawful activities: first she is a mother, then the rest.
The action scenes were just the right ones, no shots are fired just to create an effect on the viewer, and even sometimes without bullets the enemy was already finished.
It ends with an ending that redeems those who really needed it, whether they were criminals or not, whether they were in or out of jail. Everyone bore their own guilt, and the hour of their final judgment came.
I was really pleased with this movie, because beyond Gibson's personal life and what the show business shows us from his very biased eye, this actor/director always presents us with characters and stories that very few would dare to develop, doing it in a masterful way and with a point of view that forces you to keep thinking about it after you finish watching it.

No les ha pasado que terminan de parte del criminal en la resolución de algunos crímenes? En este caso terminas haciéndolo, y no es porque el protagonista sea Mel Gibson.
Esta película que fue estrenada en 2012, primeramente para ser exhibida en servicios de video on demand, fue también escrita por Gibson, quien luego de una temporada bastante agitada en su vida personal, había estado de muy bajo perfil.
La historia comienza con una persecución justo en la zona en la que se ubica el muro fronterizo entre USA y México, y en un intento por burlar a la justicia, luego de un rato, Gibson al volante decide pasar el muro con todo y auto, sin contar con que las autoridades mexicanas también lo estaban esperando.
En esta parte ya vemos como la corrupción interna se va entretejiendo, y aunque los policías norteamericanos se lo quieren llevar, al estar en suelo mexicano fueron estos lo que se llevan a Gibson y a su compañero herido., quien muere y es cremado, mientras que el "gringo" es llevado a una cárcel llamada el pueblito, que tiene más aspecto de ser una villa (barrio pobre) que una prisión.
Representar el submundo de cómo se vive en una prisión latinoamericana siempre se basa en clichés: asinamiento, calor, falta de servicios básicos y violencia. Pero en el pueblito vemos aquello que se intuye que pasa, pero no se dice abiertamente: comercios, preferencias, tráfico y hasta las visitas conyugales improvisadas en carpas ubicadas en el patio común.
En "Atrapen al Gringo" van más allá de demostrar si los presidiarios son culpables o no, se quiere presentar el trasfondo de cada uno de los protagonistas y cuáles son las razones que los mueven a actuar de esa forma.
Una frase que me gustó y que en el fondo te hace cambiar la perspectiva del personaje de Mel, es cuando confiesa sobre su primera entrada en la cárcel, con tan solo 14 años, ya que al ver el abuso de su padre contra su madre lo golpeó, pero su "único error fue que no lo maté". Quizás piensen que lo justifico, pero al darle ese contexto al personaje, vemos no solo que no actúa por vanidad, sino por necesidad de salvarse a si mismo.
Igualmente la escena cuando la madre del pequeño que comparte protagonismo con el "Gringo" es torturada, nos demuestra que aunque sea una delincuente, su papel de madre es tan o más fuerte que el de cualquiera que se dedique a actividades lícitas: primero es madre, luego lo demás.
Las escenas de acción fueron las justas, no se dispara para solo crear un efecto en el espectador, e inclusive a veces sin balas ya el enemigo estaba acabado.
Termina con un final que redime a quienes realmente lo necesitaban, fueran o no delincuentes, estuvieran ellos dentro o fuera de la cárcel. Cada quien cargaba con sus culpas, y les llegó la hora de su juicio final.
Realmente me sentí complacida con esta película, pues más allá de la vida personal de Gibson y de lo que nos muestra la farándula desde su muy parcializado ojo, este actor/director nos presenta siempre personajes e historias que muy pocos se atreverían a desarrollar, haciéndolo de manera magistral y con un punto de vista que te obliga a seguir pensando en ella luego de terminar de verla.
