Just a few days ago, Max premiered the controversial movie Salem's Lot based on Stephen King's novel "Salem's Lot". And I say controversial not because of its content, but because it had been mysteriously missing for 2 years. No one can explain why, but the movie had been finished and ready for release for two years, yet HBO had been delaying it without any apparent reason.

Stephen King himself wrote on his X account:

"I don't understand why it's not being released."

The thing is, two years later, right in the middle of Halloween, the film directed by Gary Dauberman (screenwriter of 'It') premieres directly on Max (not in theaters 🤷).
After watching it, I come to give my honest opinion without spoilers.

One might expect that a title like this, based on one of the best novels by the master of horror and premiered right in the middle of Halloween, would be well received, and yet that has not been the case. So what happened? Is the movie very bad?

In my opinion as a fan of Stephen King and of horror literature and cinema in general, I must say that it is not a masterpiece or a gem of the genre that will go down in history, but I didn't think it was bad either. As King himself said, it's old-school horror and I found it to be a decent adaptation. It is true that many things leave something to be desired, mainly the lack of development of its characters and the absence of elements that gave depth to the story in the book.
I was reading a bit and it turns out that the original film was nearly 3 hours long, and with the director's cuts they left it at 113 minutes. Hence why many things feel rushed in the plot, or like there's a time jump or gap. I personally missed several things from the book, like the scene with the dog at the cemetery or the connection between Ben Mears and the Marsten house, and even the development of the romantic relationship between Ben and Susan. But still, I enjoyed it, the aesthetics and setting seemed well done, it has three or four powerful moments, and despite the omissions, they didn't invent anything weird outside of the original story (which is quite appreciated today).

Nevertheless, I think what most goes against this new adaptation is the annoying habit of making comparisons (both with the book and with previous adaptations).
Surely, if it weren't based on one of Stephen King's best novels and if it didn't have the benchmark of the great adaptation by Tobbe Hoper, the situation would be different.
For my part, I understood a long time ago that comparing a movie to the book is unfair, and I am at peace with that. They are very different means of expression, with very different resources, and one must discern in order to appreciate the good that each has to offer.

Hace pocos días Max estrenó la controvertida película Salem's Lot basada en la novela de Stephen King "El misterio de Salem's Lot". Y digo controvertida no por su contenido, sino porque llevaba 2 años misteriosamente perdida. Nadie se explica el porqué, pero la película llevaba dos años terminada y lista para su estreno y sin embargo HBO la estuvo retrasando sin ningún motivo aparente.

El caso es que dos años después, en pleno mes de Halloween, la cinta dirigida por Gary Dauberman (guionista de ‘It’) se estrena directamente en Max (no en cines 🤷).

Cabría esperar que un título como este, basado en una de las mejores novelas del maestro del terror y estrenado en pleno mes de Halloween tendría buena aceptación, y sin embargo no ha sido así. Entonces ¿qué pasó? ¿Es muy mala la película?

En mi opinión como fan de Stephen King y de la literatura y cine de terror en general debo decir que no es una obra maestra ni una joya del género que pasará a la historia, pero aún así no me pareció mala. Como bien dijo King, es terror de la vieja escuela y me pareció una adaptación decente. Es cierto que muchas cosas dejan que desear, principalmente la falta de desarrollo de sus personajes y ausencia de elementos que le daban profundidad a la historia en el libro.
Estuve leyendo un poco y resulta que la cinta original tenía casi 3 horas y con los cortes de dirección la dejaron en 113 minutos. De ahí el porqué muchas cosas se sienten apresuradas en la trama, o como si hubiera un salto temporal o vacío. Yo particularmente eché de menos varias cosas del libro, como la escena del perro en el cementerio o la conexión de Ben Mears con la casa Marsten, e incluso el desarrollo de la relación sentimental entre Ben y Susan. Pero aún así la disfruté, la estética y la ambientación me parecieron bien logradas, tiene tres o cuatro momentos potentes y a pesar de las omisiones no se inventaron nada raro fuera de la historia original (cosa que hoy en día se agradece bastante)

De cualquier forma, pienso que lo que más juega en contra de esta nueva adaptación es la odiosa manía de hacer comparaciones (tanto con el libro como con las adaptaciones anteriores)
Seguramente, si no estuviera basada en uno de las mejores novelas de Stephen King y si no tuviera el referente de la gran adaptación de Tobbe Hoper, la situación sería diferente.
Por mi parte hace mucho tiempo entendí que comparar una película con el libro es algo injusto, y estoy en paz con eso. Son medios de expresión muy diferentes, con recursos muy diferentes y hay que discernir para poder apreciar lo bueno que cada uno tiene que aportar.
