"UNKNOWN" 2011. // A movie with unexpected twists and turns. (Review) [Eng - Esp]

I think that after so many years, I have discovered a kind of phobia when watching this film; perhaps because of this, I enjoyed a movie that touches the subject and I shared my review with you a few months ago, which coincidentally bears the same name as this "Unknown", but its name for Spanish America is "Mentes en blanco"; while in this case it is called "Sin identidad". Although the plot touches on the theme of memory loss and in both cases, it is approached in a different way; it has its similarities.

Creo que después de tantos años, he descubierto una especie de fobia al ver esta cinta; quizás por esto, disfruté de una película que toca el tema y compartí mi reseña con ustedes hace algunos meses, que casualmente lleva el mismo nombre que ésta "Unknown", pero su nombre para Hispanoamérica es Mentes en blanco; mientras que en este caso se denomina "Sin identidad". Aunque la trama toca el tema de la pérdida de memoria y en ambos casos, se enfoca de manera distinta; tiene sus similitudes.

This is the first time I've seen this film, although when I noticed that it involved Liam Neeson and Diane Krueger, I decided to give it a chance. Another element that attracted me immediately, is that the events take place in a European city, that is, outside the United States of America; but it is not just any city, it is the capital of Germany, Berlin. This undoubtedly gave it another air, another perspective away from the traditional New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Washington DC, among others.

Es la primera vez que veo este film, aunque cuando advertí que se trataba de Liam Neeson y Diane Krueger, decidí darle una oportunidad. Otro de los elementos que me atrajo de inmediato, es que los hechos se desarrollan en una ciudad europea, es decir, fuera de los Estados Unidos de América; pero no es cualquier ciudad sino que se trata de la capital de Alemania, Berlin. Esto sin duda le dio otro aire, otra óptica alejada de la ya tradicional New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston Washington DC, entre otras.

Everything starts very quiet, a guy of Neeson's looks travels on business, on a flight to the German city; accompanied by his beautiful wife. Everything seems to be very well planned, they have hotel reservations and invitations to the presentation of an important scientific event. Liam plays the distinguished Doctor Martin Harris, while his wife Elizabeth is played by January Jones; an oversight causes Martin's briefcase to be left at the airport and he returns to pick it up, but a road accident interrupts his search.

Todo comienza muy tranquilo, un tipo de la estampa de Neeson viaja por negocios, en un vuelo hacia la urbe germana; acompañado de su hermosa esposa. Todo parece estar muy bien planificado, tienen reservaciones de hotel e invitaciones a la presentación de un importante evento científico. Liam encarna al distinguido Doctor Martin Harris, mientras que su esposa Elizabeth es interpretada por January Jones; un descuido hace que el maletín de Martin se quede en el aeropuerto y él regresa a buscarlo, pero un accidente vial interrumpe su búsqueda.

Because of the blow to the head, Martin wakes up with partial memory loss, he remembers some things, perhaps the most basic ones or the ones he had in mind, in those moments before the accident. As I watched this I wondered... If someone leads a double life and suffers a similar accident which version of themselves will they remember first? The problem begins when it is the other people, who don't remember you and in your place, there is another. All this about the people closest to you denying they know you is the phobia I mentioned.

Por el golpe recibido en la cabeza, Martin despierta con pérdida parcial de su memoria, recuerda algunas cosas, quizás las más básicas o las que tuvo en mente, en esos instantes previos al accidente. Mientras veía esto me preguntaba... Si alguien lleva una doble vida y sufre un accidente similar ¿Cuál versión de sí mismo recordará primero? El problema comienza cuando son las otras personas, quienes no le recuerdan y en su lugar, hay otro. Todo esto de que las personas más allegadas, nieguen conocerte, es la fobia que les mencioné.

I consider that the plot is well structured, I loved the atmosphere of the European winter; especially the predominance in the scene, of the emblematic car brand of Germany (Mercedes-Benz). But returning to the facts of the film, I was surprised that what seemed to be a post-traumatic disorder, became a possible case of identity theft, but it was not that either; then these changes kept me expectant at all times, because if I got up from the couch, I would lose the thread of the story.

Considero que la trama está bien estructurada, el ambiente del invierno europeo me encantó; sobre todo la predominancia en escena, de la marca de vehículos emblemática de Alemania (Mercedes-Benz). Pero volviendo a los hechos del filme, me sorprendió que, lo que parecía un trastorno post-traumático, pasó a ser un posible caso de usurpación de identidad, pero tampoco era aquello; entonces estos cambios me mantuvieron expectante en todo momento, porque si me levantaba del sofá, perdería el hilo de la historia.

Of course, I have been left with a great reflection on the true motives of Dr. Harris and his wife; and that is that when it comes to the common good for our fellow citizens, or with our fellow man; it seems to be more difficult to achieve the objectives. The great advances in science have with them a kind of inseparable contradiction, because they seem to be made only for those who can pay for them. In the world of cinema, the subject has been touched upon for a long time (in its own way); in aspects such as technology, health and food, there are elites who do not want it to reach everyone equally.

Por supuesto, me ha quedado una gran reflexión de los verdaderos motivos del Doctor Harris y su esposa; y es que cuando se trata del bien común para nuestros conciudadanos, o con nuestro prójimo; pareciera ser más difícil de que se logren los objetivos. Los grandes avances de la ciencia, tienen consigo una especie de contradicción inseparable, porque parecen estar hechos solo para quien puede pagar por ellos. En el mundo del cine hace rato que vienen tocando el tema (a su manera); en aspectos como la tecnología, la salud y la alimentación; hay élites que no quieren que llegue a todos por igual.

I found it curious, but I also related this film to others with a very similar plot, or at least part of it. I was also struck by the role played by Gina (played by the beautiful Diane Krueger), an illegal girl who does not hesitate to do any job to make a living; and it is far from the roles in which I had seen Krueger before. The rest of the cast makes it all seem very natural, such is the case of Sebastian Koch (playing the brilliant Dr. Leo Bressler) and Aidan Quin as the other Martin Harris ha,ha,ha.

Me pareció curioso, pero también relacioné esta cinta con otras de gran similitud en su trama, o al menos en parte de esta. También llamó mi atención el papel que juega Gina (interpretada por la bella Diane Krueger), una chica ilegal que no duda en realizar cualquier trabajo para ganarse la vida; y está lejos de los roles en que había visto a Krueger anteriormente. El resto del elenco se encarga de que todo parezca muy natural, tal es el caso de Sebastian Koch (interpretando al brillante Dr. Leo Bressler) y Aidan Quin como el otro Martin Harris ja,ja,ja.

Despite the details I have noticed, implausible things that detract a little from the realism, perhaps to remind me that I am watching a movie; I have evaluated this film as positive. I liked its different context and the order of the elements, which create a unique atmosphere. I must admit that I would have liked to see it in the theater, first because it is kind to my ears, even in its action passages and even in the music that played in the disco ha,ha,ha. But there was also the participation of veteran actors who always bring presence and seriousness to the film; such as Frank Langella and Bruno Ganz (RIP).

Pese a los detalles que he notado, cosas inverosímiles que restan un poco del realismo, quizás para recordarme que estoy viendo una película; he evaluado este filme como positivo. Me ha gustado su contexto diferente y el orden de los elementos, que crean una atmosfera única. Debo reconocer que me hubiese gustado verla en el cine, primero porque es amable con mis oídos, incluso en sus pasajes de acción y hasta en la música que sonaba en la discoteca ja,ja,ja. Pero también hubo participación de actores veteranos que siempre aportan presencia y seriedad a la cinta; tales como Frank Langella y Bruno Ganz (QEPD).

Is it possible that at this point there are individual interests that come before human principles? The constant twists in this film made me see the good guys become bad guys and vice versa; but the Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra takes care of recreating us without losing the order of events, full of action and a lot of intrigue. It is a film that I recommend.

¿Será posible que a estas alturas existan intereses individuales que se anteponen a los principios humanos? Los constantes giros en esta película me hacían ver a los buenos convertirse en malos y viceversa; pero el director español Jaume Collet-Serra se encarga de recrearnos sin perder el orden de los sucesos, llenos de acción y mucha intriga. Es una película que recomiendo.
