Welcome my dear internet travelers and thank you very much for having made a temporary stop in my post, even though we have started a new year there are some customs that I like to maintain, among those is watching horror movies hoping to get one that is excellent (Most of the time they are garbage but hey, hope is the last thing that is lost) that is why I decided that “The Babadook” would be the first horror movie of the year that I saw. Without further ado, prepare to face a monster because we are about to begin.
Bienvenidos mis queridos viajeros del internet y muchas gracias por haber hecho una parada temporal en mi post, pese a que hayamos iniciado un nuevo año existen algunas costumbres que me gusta mantener, dentro de esas está la de ver películas de terror esperando conseguir alguna que sea excelente (La mayoría de las veces son basura pero bueno, la esperanza es lo último que se pierde) es por ello que decidí que “The Babadook” fuese la primera película de terror del año que viese. Sin más que agregar prepárense para enfrentase a un monstruo pues estamos por comenzar.
The Babadook is an Australian film that was released in 2014, directed by Jennifer Kent and produced by Causeway Films, it has a duration of 1 hour and 54 minutes. It is a horror film, the story focuses on Amelia and her son, she has raised her son alone due to the death of her husband, the issue is that the little boy has several behavioral problems which has led him to have different problems in school that led to her expulsion, all these complications will worsen when a strange book about a spectral being appears in her house, and, after reading it, her son begins to see strange things and sooner rather than later she does too.
The Babadook es un filme australiano que fue estrenado en 2014, dirigida por Jennifer Kent y producida por Causeway Films, cuenta con una duración de 1 hora y 54 minutos. Es un filme de terror, la historia se centra en Amelia y su hijo, ella ha criado a su hijo sola debido al fallecimiento de su esposo, el asunto es que el pequeño tiene varios problemas de conducta lo que ha llevado que tenga diferentes problemas en la escuela que derivaron en su expulsión, todas estas complicaciones empeoraran cuando un libro extraño sobre un ser espectral aparezca en su casa, y, después de leerlo, su hijo comience a ver cosas raras y más temprano que tarde ella también.

The soundtrack is good in general terms, it has one or another moment in which it is used intelligently in order to generate a certain level of suspense and intrigue, it does not do it all the time but in the moments when it is pleasant.
La banda sonora se encuentra bien a grandes rasgos, tiene uno que otro momento en el cual es utilizada de forma inteligente a fin de generar cierto nivel de suspenso e intriga, no lo hace todo el tiempo pero en los momentos en que sí resulta agradable.
The world building is quite poor, although it tries to show a mostly dark scenery, this is not really used in the correct way because nothing is ever done with it, throughout the film only an empty context is shown with nothing truly interesting so it quickly becomes irrelevant.
La construcción de mundo es bastante pobre, si bien trata de mostrar una escenografía mayormente oscura, esto no es utilizado realmente de la forma correcta debido a que nunca se hace nada con ella, a lo largo del filme solo se muestra un contexto vacío sin nada verdaderamente interesante por lo que rápidamente se torna en algo carente de relevancia.
The plot is quite slow, throughout the film it tries to build a certain level of tension which is never truly achieved because it does not have scenes that help consolidate said idea, at the same time, it crudely explains its premise so It ends up being somewhat crude. Narratively it is generic, it is the typical story in which a demon or whatever tries to take over the life of a child, however, it works this concept very poorly to the point that it takes certain absurd turns that do not make sense, and , consolidates his bad decisions with a simply pathetic ending. The length is exaggerated, the film is extremely basic for it to last almost 2 hours, in addition, it takes too long to show genuinely interesting scenes to capture the viewer's attention, ergo, it is easy to get bored watching it.
La trama es bastante lenta, a lo largo del filme se intenta construir cierto nivel de tensión el cual nunca es conseguido verdaderamente debido a que no tiene escenas que ayuden a consolidar dicha idea, a su vez, explica de forma tosca su premisa por lo que termina siendo algo burda. Narrativamente es genérica, es la típica historia en la que un demonio o lo que sea intenta apoderarse de la vida de un niño, no obstante, trabaja de forma muy mala este concepto al punto de que da ciertos giros absurdos que no tienen sentido, y, consolida sus malas decisiones con un final sencillamente patético. La duración es exagerada, la película es sumamente básica como para que tenga una duración de casi 2 horas, además, tarda mucho en mostrar escenas genuinamente interesantes como para capturar la atención del espectador, ergo, es fácil aburrirse viéndola.
The characters are an empty and boring shell, you are supposed to connect with the situation they are going through and so on, however, they are so poorly developed that it is impossible to care about them, all of this reduces them to completely forgettable protagonists lacking personality.
Los personajes son un cascarón vacío y aburrido, se supone que deberías conectar con la situación que atraviesan y demás, sin embargo, estos están tan mal desarrollados que es imposible interesarse por ellos, todo esto los reduce a protagonistas completamente olvidables y carentes de personalidad.
The Babadook is a generic film that seeks to go easy by following all the clichés of horror films, in addition to this, there is its small "innovation" in its final twist that is completely stupid, it seems like an attempt to generate a certain parallelism with the mental problems, the mother/son relationship or something, I couldn't tell you why the movie never shows the slightest effort to make that clear. It is for all the above that it deserves 1 star out of 7, if this is the best that the Australians can offer in terms of horror films it is quite disappointing.
The Babadook es un filme genérico que busca irse por lo fácil al seguir todos los clichés de los filmes de terror, aunado a ello, se encuentra su pequeña “innovación” en su giro final que resulta completamente estúpido, parece un intento por generar cierto paralelismo con los problemas mentales, la relación madre/hijo o algo así, no sabría decirles por qué la película nunca muestra el más mínimo esfuerzo por dejar eso claro. Es por todo lo anterior que merece 1 estrella de 7, si esto es lo mejor que pueden ofrecer los australianos en cuanto a cintas de terror es bastante decepcionante.
