The wait was worth it, I had pending to see another of the gems presented at the Cannes Film Festival last year and I finally had time to enjoy this fantastic Norwegian film. It was months avoiding any kind of criticism or spoilers, a difficult task, I had to use some of my anti spoilers techniques to get to see the film knowing as little as possible about it.
That's the bad thing about social networks, we are constantly bombarded with information and people who even for ruining the movie experience of others, are dedicated to launch spoilers. They do it out of malice, and it is that subject, the malice of the human being, is what I will talk about in this review.
La espera ha merecido la pena, tenía pendiente ver otra de las joyas presentadas en el Festival de Cannes el año pasado y por fin he tenido tiempo de disfrutar de esta fantástica película noruega. Fueron meses evitando cualquier tipo de crítica o spoiler, una tarea difícil, tuve que usar algunas de mis técnicas anti spoilers para llegar a ver la película sabiendo lo menos posible de ella.
Es lo malo de las redes sociales, que nos bombardean constantemente con información y gente que incluso por arruinar la experiencia cinematográfica de otros, se dedican a lanzar spoilers. Lo hacen por maldad, y es ese tema, la maldad del ser humano, es de lo hablare en esta crítica de opinión.
What is the plot of The Innocents?
A family moves in summer to a set of apartment blocks that is surrounded by a wooded area. In that family there are two girls, Ida, about 10 years old, and Anna, a few years older but autistic. Ida tries to make friends and meets Ben, while Anna, despite her advanced autism, seems to get along well with another girl of Araba origin who suffers from vitiligo. The fantastic becomes present when they discover that they possess some special qualities, what starts out as harmless games turns into a terrifying story, where the inherent evil in all humans comes to the surface at an early age.

Una familia se muda en verano a un conjunto de bloques de apartamentos que está rodeado por una zona boscosa. En esa familia hay dos niñas, Ida, de unos 10 años, y Anna, unos años mayor pero autista. Ida intenta hacer amigos y conoce a Ben, mientras que Anna, a pesar de su avanzado autismo, parece llevarse bien con otra niña de origen araba que padece vitíligo. Lo fantástico se hace presente cuando descubren que poseen algunas cualidades especiales, lo que comienza con juegos inofensivos se convierte en una historia aterradora, donde la maldad inherente a todos los humanos sale a la superficie a una edad temprana.
The age of innocence
Do you remember your childhood? Do you miss those times? Do you remember the games? The fears? Perhaps if we think back to our childhood, many of us would like to go back to that time when the only responsibility was to go to class and get good grades in school and especially to spend a lot of time playing with our best friends.
Playing, having fun, sharing moments with friends inventing all kinds of ways to entertain ourselves, imagining that we could be like the superheroes in animations, being able to fly, move objects, have powers. Imagination, when we are children, has no limits.
Surely many of us laugh when we remember the pranks we used to do as children and we would like to go back in time, to have such an innocent vision of the world again. Wait, wait a minute... were we really innocent?
I want you to answer me something: You never had bad thoughts? You never did anything wrong? Seriously, make a mental effort and dig inside your mind. Didn't you wish bad things on the bully who bullied you? Didn't you hate the girl who thought she was the prettiest? Didn't you do something bad to an innocent animal?
La edad de la inocencia
¿Recuerda su infancia? ¿Extrañas esos tiempos? ¿Recuerdas los juegos? ¿Los miedos? Quizás si pensamos en nuestra infancia, a muchos nos gustaría volver a esa época en la que la única responsabilidad era ir a clase y sacar buenas notas en el colegio y especialmente pasar mucho tiempo jugando con nuestros mejores amigos.
Jugar, divertirse, compartir momentos con los amigos inventando todo tipo de formas para entretenerse, imaginando que podríamos ser como los superhéroes de las animaciones, pudiendo volar, mover objetos, tener poderes. La imaginación, cuando somos niños, no tiene límites.
Seguro que muchos nos reímos cuando recordamos las travesuras que hacíamos cuando éramos niños y nos gustaría volver atrás en el tiempo, para volver a tener una visión tan inocente del mundo. Espera, un momento... ¿realmente éramos inocentes?
Quiero que me respondas algo: ¿Nunca tuviste malos pensamientos? ¿Nunca hiciste nada malo? En serio, haz un esfuerzo mental y rebusca dentro de tu mente. ¿No le deseaste cosas malas al matón que te acosaba? ¿No odiaste a la chica que se creía la más guapa? ¿No le hiciste algo malo a un animal inocente?
Evil
What we socially define as evil impacts us more when it comes from a child. I think I am not wrong if I say that most of us think that children are innocent beings, that they have no evil in their heart, although we must remember that evil behaviors do not come from the heart, just like everything we do as human beings, all behaviors, reactions and feelings come from the brain, the engine that controls absolutely everything in our organism.
So, I wonder: are we born with evil or do we learn it?
There must be thousands of studies on this subject, experts, scientists and specialists in the study of the mind must have their own theories, perhaps if we do a quick search on the internet we will even find books that professionally address this issue that can produce debates and discussions.
I am not a scientist, I am an ordinary man who limited myself to observe human behavior. For me, evil is innate in all of us, of course when we are children and we are in that process of formation, acquiring knowledge, copying behaviors of our family environment or our friends, we do not realize that sometimes we can cross the boundaries established between good and evil.
La maldad
Lo que socialmente definimos como maldad nos impacta más cuando proviene de un niño. Creo que no me equivoco si digo que la mayoría pensamos que los niños son seres inocentes, que no tienen maldad en su corazón, aunque debemos recordar que las conductas malvadas no salen del corazón, al igual que todo lo que hacemos como seres humanos, todas las conductas, reacciones y sentimientos salen del cerebro, el motor que controla absolutamente todo en nuestro organismo.
Entonces, me pregunto: ¿nacemos con maldad o la aprendemos?
Deben existir miles de estudios sobre este tema, los expertos, científicos y especialistas en el estudio de la mente deben tener sus propias teorías, quizás si hacemos una búsqueda rápida en internet encontraremos incluso libros que abordan profesionalmente esta cuestión que pueden producir debates y discusiones.
Yo no soy un científico, soy un hombre común y corriente que me limitó a observar el comportamiento humano. Para mí, la maldad es innata en todos nosotros, claro que cuando somos niños y estamos en ese proceso de formación, adquiriendo conocimientos, copiando comportamientos de nuestro entorno familiar o de nuestros amigos, no nos damos cuenta de que a veces podemos traspasar los límites establecidos entre el bien y el mal.
Can a child be bad?
Some say no, because being at an age when our personality is not completely defined, perhaps the bad things that these children do are a product of their own innocence and they do not know how to distinguish between what is right and what is wrong.
Personally I differ on this point, because there are other factors that need to be studied to draw that conclusion. Perhaps they are children with some pathology in their behavior, perhaps they were born with some mental problem or they are victims of their environment, suffering a trauma within the family nucleus from a very young age.
I will give an example that I witnessed: several months ago a group of children from a nearby building, whose ages ranged from 8 to 10 years old, mistreated a helpless cat that had been born with motor problems and could not walk. The children threw him to the ground and threw stones at him, laughing at the animal who was not hurting anyone. Fortunately they intervened at that moment, rescuing the kitten from what would be his certain death, all because of the fun and meanness that already exists in some children.
Currently the kitten is in my care, but I can't explain how children can be so malicious, pretending to kill a defenseless being. Can't they be evil? Are you sure?
I invite you to use Google and do another search, this time for cases where children have premeditatedly murdered other children or adults. The number of cases will surprise you.
¿Puede ser malo un niño?
Algunos dicen que no, porque al tratarse de una edad en la que nuestra personalidad no está completamente definida, quizás las cosas malas que hacen estos niños son producto de su propia inocencia y no saben distinguir entre lo que está bien y lo que está mal.
Personalmente difiero en este punto, porque hay otros factores que hay que estudiar para sacar esa conclusión. Quizás sean niños con alguna patología en su comportamiento, quizás hayan nacido con algún problema mental o sean víctimas de su entorno, sufriendo un trauma dentro del núcleo familiar desde muy pequeños.
Pondré un ejemplo del que fui testigo: hace varios meses un grupo de niños de un edificio cercano, cuyas edades oscilaban entre los 8 y los 10 años, maltrataron a un gato indefenso que había nacido con problemas motrices y no podía caminar. Los niños lo tiraron al suelo y le lanzaron piedras, riéndose del animal que no hacía daño a nadie. Afortunadamente intervinieron en ese momento, rescatando al gatito de lo que sería su muerte segura, todo por la diversión y maldad que ya existe en algunos niños.
Actualmente el gatito está a mi cargo, pero no me explico cómo los niños pueden ser tan maliciosos, pretendiendo matar a un ser indefenso. ¿No pueden ser malvados? ¿Está usted seguro?
Te invito a que utilices Google y hagas otra búsqueda, esta vez de casos en los que niños hayan asesinado premeditadamente a otros niños o adultos. El número de casos te sorprenderá.
Daylight Horror
The director and screenwriter of this production sets the story in a set of apartments with a mixture of characters of different nationalities, reflecting the current society of many of those countries that have given shelter to people from other parts of the world, leaving offspring and making a home there.
There are practically no scenes in the dark, moving away completely from conventional horror, where darkness is always related to the most lurid moments of the stories. On the contrary, light acquires much presence in the story, making it more disturbing.
What begins as a game between children, having fun and having a good time, jumps to scenes that escalate in tension until they become truly terrifying.
Imagine that some children discover that they have special qualities, that they can do things that others can not, at first it will be fun, but when anger and fear make presence in them, they can unleash chaos and pure evil will spread throughout the place.
Fantastic element
The filmmaker resorts to the use of fantastic elements to make us reflect on the main theme I have already explained. It is not the first time, he was one of the screenwriters of the film Thelma, which was presented several years ago at the Sitges Festival, receiving good reviews. On that occasion the protagonist who discovers special powers is an adult.
What makes the story told in The Innocents even more terrifying is that the protagonists who discover certain powers are children. As I told you, those little people that we will always see as beings that have no evil thoughts and that we believe are incapable of doing bad things.
I could feel the fear and evil that the characters of the story transmit. The director manages to make us feel many emotions, but above all to create that atmosphere full of tension and that will disturb our mind, more and more, until reaching a final climax where evil will be victorious.
Don't think that this is a movie where the X-Men are children. You're wrong and you'd better not see it if you think this movie is going that way. The fantasy is used to reinforce the message which is more realistic and raw, there are no sides of good versus evil, everyone has good and evil, just some have more of the latter.
Family nucleus
The film also demystifies the belief that children with a disorder that can cause them to misbehave must have a dysfunctional family.
The protagonist is Ida, the 10-year-old girl, whose parents are loving and seem to lack nothing. There is no mistreatment, no abuse. But Ida doesn't seem to like her older sister, who is autistic, very much, and in the first scenes we see her pinching her sister, who doesn't seem to react. Immediately the filmmaker makes us wonder if Ida does it out of innocence and to see if her sister reacts or, on the contrary, she does it for the pleasure of evil.
The relationship between these two sisters changes during the story and although they must unite to protect themselves, they are aware that to save themselves they must do something very bad. The spirit of survival prevails, as it does in all of us. If you or your family are threatened, aren't you capable of doing something terrifying? And back to the point, we are good and bad at the same time, we just have to maintain a balance to live together in society, but when that balance is broken, a part of it is the only way to save ourselves.
Horror a la luz del día
El director y guionista de esta producción ambienta la historia en un conjunto de apartamentos con una mezcla de personajes de diferentes nacionalidades, reflejando la sociedad actual de muchos de esos países que han dado cobijo a personas de otras partes del mundo , dejado descendencia y conformando un hogar allí.
Prácticamente no hay escenas en la oscuridad, alejándose por completo del terror convencional, donde la oscuridad siempre está relacionada con los momentos más escabrosos de las historias. Por el contrario, la luz adquiere mucha presencia en la historia, haciéndola más inquietante.
Lo que comienza como un juego entre niños, divirtiéndose y pasando un buen rato, salta a escenas que van escalando en tensión hasta llegar a ser realmente terroríficas.
Imagina que unos niños descubren que tienen cualidades especiales, que pueden hacer cosas que los demás no pueden, al principio será divertido, pero cuando la ira y el miedo hagan presencia en ellos, podrán desatar el caos y el mal puro se extenderá por todo el lugar.
Elemento fantástico
El cineasta recurre al uso de elementos fantásticos para hacernos reflexionar sobre el tema principal que ya he explicado. No es la primera vez, el fue uno de los guionistas de la película Thelma, que se presentó hace varios años en el Festival de Sitges, recibiendo buenas críticas. En aquella ocasión el protagonista que descubre poderes especiales es un adulto.
Lo que hace más terrorífica la historia que se cuenta en Los inocentes es que los protagonistas que descubren ciertos poderes son niños. Como les dije, esas personitas que siempre veremos como seres que no tienen malos pensamientos y que creemos que son incapaces de hacer cosas malas.
He podido sentir el miedo y la maldad que transmiten los personajes de la historia. El director consigue hacernos sentir muchas emociones, pero sobre todo crear esa atmósfera llena de tensión y que perturbará nuestra mente, cada vez más, hasta llegar a un clímax final donde el mal saldrá victorioso.
No creas que es una película en la que los X-Men son niños. Te equivocas y es mejor que no la veas si crees que esta película va por ahí. La fantasía se utiliza para reforzar el mensaje que es más realista y crudo, no hay bandos del bien contra el mal, todos tienen el bien y el mal, solo que algunos tienen más de este último.
Núcleo familiar
La película también desmitifica la creencia de que los niños con un trastorno que puede hacer que se comporten mal deben tener una familia disfuncional.
La protagonista es Ida, la niña de 10 años, cuyos padres son cariñosos y no parece faltarles nada. No hay malos tratos, ni abusos. Pero a Ida no parece gustarle mucho su hermana mayor, que es autista, y en las primeras escenas la vemos pellizcar a su hermana, que no parece reaccionar. Inmediatamente el cineasta nos hace preguntarnos si Ida lo hace por inocencia y ver si su hermana reacciona o, por el contrario, lo hace por el placer del mal.
La relación entre estas dos hermanas cambia durante la historia y aunque deben unirse para protegerse, son conscientes de que para salvarse deben hacer algo muy malo. El espíritu de supervivencia prevalece, como lo hace en todos nosotros. Si tú o tu familia se ven amenazados, ¿no son capaces de hacer algo terrorífico? Y volvemos al punto, somos buenos y malos al mismo tiempo, sólo tenemos que mantener un equilibrio para convivir en sociedad, pero cuando ese equilibrio se rompe, una parte de él es la única forma de salvarse.
The children
We should pay attention to this group of child actors who were selected after a long period of studying each of the applicants to get the characters. I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of them become big stars in their country's movies or television.
Alva Brynsmo Ramstad plays Anna, who has the most difficult role to play, as her character is autistic and this promising young actress manages to totally convince us of her character's condition, which has an important scene of great tension in store, which will make us breathe the fear that a creepy event is about to happen. An excellent character, built and interpreted in an excellent way.
Rakel Lenora Fløttum is not far behind, she also gives a great performance, impersonating Ida, Anna's sister and who wants to make friends during that summer. A curious girl and although some of her actions at the beginning make us doubt her behavior, we also see her being fragile and feeling afraid, when she witnesses atrocious acts of evil, but at the same time she must do something horrible to get out unscathed.
Sam Ashraf and Mina Yasmin Bremseth Asheim are the other two children in the main cast. Sam plays Ben, the one who first manifests the special qualities and befriends Ida. For him it's just a game, his lifelong power of fun, but certain circumstances in his environment, both on the street and at home, will bring out bad feelings.
Mina plays Aisha, the girl with vitiligo and who is the sweetest of the whole group, in fact there are few traces of evil in her actions, she is the one who establishes a close relationship with Anna, with whom she can communicate more fluently. Perhaps because of this she is the most affected by fear, sensing and knowing the intentions of another of the characters. She seems the weakest of the group.
The adults
If they are part of the story, but their participation is secondary. It focuses on the world of children and how they relate to each other, in turn, it highlights how children behave one way with their parents and another when they are alone with their friends. This is something we have all experienced as children, most do not behave in the same way.
Something in common in all four families is that there is affection from their parents towards their children. Only the relationship between Ben and his mother has an underlying problem that causes Ben's character to transform.
The adults solve nothing in this story, which belongs to the children. They will be mere spectators or victims.
Los niños
Debemos prestar atención a este grupo de niños actores que fueron seleccionados tras un largo periodo de estudio de cada uno de los aspirantes a conseguir los personajes. No me sorprendería que un par de ellos se convirtieran en grandes estrellas del cine o la televisión de su país.
Alva Brynsmo Ramstad interpreta a Anna, que tiene el papel más difícil de interpretar, ya que su personaje es autista y esta joven promesa de la interpretación consigue convencernos totalmente de la condición de su personaje, que tiene reservada una importante escena de gran tensión, que nos hará respirar el miedo de que un acontecimiento espeluznante está a punto de suceder. Un personaje excelente, construido e interpretado de forma excelente.
Rakel Lenora Fløttum no se queda atrás, también hace una gran interpretación, personificando a Ida, la hermana de Anna y que quiere hacer amigos durante ese verano. Una chica curiosa y aunque algunas de sus acciones al principio nos hacen dudar de su comportamiento, también la vemos ser frágil y sentir miedo, cuando es testigo de actos atroces de maldad, pero al mismo tiempo debe hacer algo horrible para salir ilesa.
Sam Ashraf y Mina Yasmin Bremseth Asheim son los otros dos niños que componen el reparto principal. Sam interpreta a Ben, el que primero manifiesta las cualidades especiales y se hace amigo de Ida. Para él es sólo un juego, su poder de diversión de toda la vida, pero ciertas circunstancias de su entorno, tanto en la calle como en casa, harán aflorar los malos sentimientos.
Mina interpreta a Aisha, la chica con vitíligo y que es la más dulce de todo el grupo, de hecho hay pocos rastros de maldad en sus acciones, es la que establece una estrecha relación con Anna, con la que puede comunicarse con mayor fluidez. Quizás por ello es la más afectada por el miedo, al sentir y conocer las intenciones de otro de los personajes. Parece la más débil del grupo.
Los adultos
Si forman parte de la historia, pero su participación es secundaria. Se centra en el mundo de los niños y en cómo se relacionan entre ellos, a su vez, se destaca cómo los niños se comportan de una manera con sus padres y de otra cuando están solos con sus amigos. Esto es algo que todos hemos vivido de pequeños, la mayoría no se comporta de la misma manera.
Algo en común en las cuatro familias es que hay afecto de sus padres hacia sus hijos. Sólo la relación entre Ben y su madre tiene un problema de fondo que hace que el carácter de Ben se transforme.
Los adultos no resuelven nada en esta historia, que pertenece a los niños. Serán meros espectadores o víctimas.
The Innocents falls into the category of psychological horror, both a thriller and a drama that exploits our fears through the fantasy and imagination that apparently harmless children can have.
It is the second film as director of Norwegian filmmaker Eskil Vogt, who was at the recent Oscar ceremony, as he was one of the nominees for Best Original Screenplay for the film The Worst Person in the World. He has participated as an actor in other productions and has written other films. He is a filmmaker who has earned my attention and I hope he surprises me in his future projects.
I would like to know your opinion about the film and in case you haven't seen it, I encourage you to look for it immediately. You won't regret it. In these times of scarcity of stories that make an impact, The Innocents is a must-see film.
The Innocents entra en la categoría de terror psicológico, a la vez que es un thriller y un drama que explota nuestros miedos a través de la fantasía y la imaginación que pueden tener unos niños aparentemente inofensivos.
Es la segunda película como director del cineasta noruego Eskil Vogt, que estuvo en la reciente ceremonia de los Oscar, ya que fue uno de los nominados al mejor guión original por la película La peor persona del mundo. Ha participado como actor en otras producciones y ha escrito otras películas. Es un cineasta que se ha ganado mi atención y espero que me sorprenda en sus futuros proyectos.
Me gustaría saber tu opinión sobre la película y en caso de que no hayas visto, te animo a que la busques inmediatamente. No te arrepentirás. En estos tiempos de escasez de historias que impacten, Los Inocentes es una película imprescindible.
