Every now and then a science fiction series is released that aspires to be successful and become an audience favorite. Some live up to expectations, others don't. Is Silo worth watching? Read on.

The last sci-fi series I really liked was Raised by Wolves, unfortunately it only had two seasons, being cancelled due to low ratings. It was a very good series, with weak points, but the positive aspects were greater. Its universe was promising.
That's why, when Silo premiered, I hesitated to start watching it. I was encouraged by two things. First, the presence behind the project of Graham Yost, with a long career in film and television, at least I was sure that the final result could be entertaining. Second was the good cast. Tim Robbns, Will Patton, David Oyelowo, Rashida Jones and Rebecca Ferguson. All of that influenced me to start watching it, despite the danger of leaving the story unfinished. Now that fear has been overcome, and it has been confirmed that there will be a second season.
Some of the cast is fairly well known, although not all of them will be around for the entire season. I liked that they have resorted to actors and actresses with a track record for some important roles, regardless of their destiny, because the one who will carry the reins of the story is Rebecca Ferguson, who is gradually establishing herself as a woman of action. At almost forty years old, she is more beautiful than ever and the last two years have been great for her career.
It should be added that Ferguson is quite involved in the series, as she is one of the producers. It is an adaptation of the books written by Hugh Howey: Wool, Shitf and Vestiges. These three books make up The Silo Collection. I have not read them, at the end of the season, I am still hesitating if while waiting for the next season, I read them to know what happens, besides the respective comparison. I don't know what I will do, because I have other pending readings.
I'm quite picky about sci-fi stories, dystopian futures, etc, maybe because so many productions are released that end up being a fiasco for me. Adaptations of books for teenagers was the recent fashion, attempts to create juvenile sagas to put out productions as if they were a doughnut factory. I don't know to what extent the story varies from the books, maybe it was conceived as a juvenile saga, at least in the series the characters are adults.
La última serie de ciencia ficción que realmente me gustó fue Raised by Wolves, desgraciadamente sólo tuvo dos temporadas, siendo cancelada por baja audiencia. Era una serie muy buena, con puntos débiles, pero los aspectos positivos eran mayores. Su universo era prometedor.
Por eso, cuando se estrenó Silo, dudé en empezar a verla. Me animaron dos cosas. Primero, la presencia detrás del proyecto de Graham Yost, con una larga trayectoria en cine y televisión, al menos estaba seguro de que el resultado final podía ser entretenido. Lo segundo era el buen reparto. Tim Robbns, Will Patton, David Oyelowo, Rashida Jones y Rebecca Ferguson. Todo eso me influyó para empezar a verla, a pesar del peligro de dejar la historia inconclusa. Ahora ese miedo se ha superado, y se ha confirmado que habrá una segunda temporada.
Parte del reparto es bastante conocido, aunque no todos estarán durante toda la temporada. Me ha gustado que hayan recurrido a actores y actrices con trayectoria para algunos papeles importantes, independientemente de su destino, porque quien llevará las riendas de la historia es Rebecca Ferguson, que poco a poco se va consolidando como una mujer de acción. A sus casi cuarenta años, está más guapa que nunca y los dos últimos años han sido estupendos para su carrera.
Hay que añadir que Ferguson está bastante implicada en la serie, ya que es una de las productoras. Se trata de una adaptación de los libros escritos por Hugh Howey: Wool, Shitf y Vestiges. Estos tres libros componen The Silo Collection. No los he leído, al finalizar la temporada, aún estoy dudando si mientras espero la siguiente temporada, los leo para saber que pasa, además de la respectiva comparación. No se que haré, porque tengo otras lecturas pendientes.
Soy bastante exigente con las historias de ciencia ficción, futuros distopicos, etc, quizás porque se estrenan muchas producciones que terminan siendo un fiasco para mí. Las adaptaciones de libros para adolescentes era la moda reciente, intentos de crear sagas juveniles para sacar producciones como si de una fábrica de donuts se tratara. No sé hasta qué punto la historia varía de los libros, quizá fue concebida como una saga juvenil, al menos en la serie los personajes son adultos.

In my top of the best series of all time, there is a science fiction series that I am very fond of, it is the remake of Battlestar Galactica premiered in the 2000s. It had a lot of space soap opera, but there were so many socio-political issues dealt with in its plot, plus a solid cast, that made it an unforgettable series. I had to wait a long time, until the premiere of The Expanse, for another sci-fi series to move me as much as that one and join my personal list of the best.
Does the Silo series measure up to those other series? An honest answer, based on my preferences is a resounding No. But I must say that the adapted universe I have seen in the season is extremely interesting, the series is entertaining, which for me is very valuable in these times of algorithmic productions that have no soul.
Before I go on with all the positives and negatives of the series, I'll explain what it's about with my own synopsis:
The world as we know it no longer exists. Something happened to the planet that has made it uninhabitable. After that great tragedy that has not been shown, the surviving humans live in a subway fortress, a gigantic Silo with a political regime of strict rules. Most of the inhabitants know only the Silo, all relics of pre-catastrophe Earth are forbidden. The tranquility is disturbed when Sheriff Holston asks to go out into the outside world, something anyone can do, but knowing he will die. People are left watching everything through a screen and other parts of the Silo only hear when the exit takes place. Alison, the Sheriff's wife had done it some time before, apparently she discovered something along with computer scientist George Wilkins. She was undergoing treatment to become pregnant, but it seems that those who rule the Silo are hiding something. The expert mechanic Juliette Nichols, who has a love affair with George (who will be murdered), will be involved in the whole mess, being chosen by Holston to be the new Sheriff. What are those in control of the Silo hiding? Is it all a lie? Why are they banning all the relics from the past? What is the problem with the pregnancies? Has the outer mute been destroyed? Is what you see on the screen real?
En mi top de mejores series de todos los tiempos, hay una serie de ciencia ficción a la que le tengo mucho cariño, se trata del remake de Battlestar Galactica estrenado en la década del 2000. Tenía mucho de culebrón espacial, pero había tantos temas sociopolíticos tratados en su trama, además de un sólido reparto, que la convierten en una serie inolvidable. Tuve que esperar mucho tiempo, hasta el estreno de The Expanse, para que otra serie de ciencia ficción me emocionara tanto como aquella y se uniera a mi lista personal de las mejores.
¿Está la serie Silo a la altura de esas otras series? Una respuesta honesta, basada en mis preferencias es un rotundo No. Pero debo decir que el universo adaptado que he visto en la temporada es sumamente interesante, la serie es entretenida, lo que para mí es muy valioso en estos tiempos de producciones algorítmicas que no tienen alma.
Antes de seguir con todo lo positivo y negativo de la serie, explicaré de qué va con mi propia sinopsis:

La mayoría de los habitantes sólo conocen el Silo, todas las reliquias de la Tierra anterior a la catástrofe están prohibidas. La tranquilidad se ve alterada cuando el sheriff Holston pide salir al mundo exterior, algo que cualquiera puede hacer, pero sabiendo que morirá. La gente se queda viéndolo todo a través de una pantalla y otras partes del Silo sólo escuchan cuando se produce la salida. Alison, la mujer del Sheriff lo había hecho tiempo atrás, al parecer descubrió algo junto con el informático George Wilkins. Estaba en tratamiento para quedarse embarazada, pero parece que los que gobiernan el Silo ocultan algo. Silo has a very powerful beginning, in which questions are quickly raised. That will make us wonder what the hell is going on, and wonder who is really the villain of this story. The design of this subway universe, with the same political and economic problems that we live dragging for centuries, in this post-apocalyptic dystopian environment, is very attractive and can be exploited well.
The whole part of the sets, the design of the Silo, the use of ancient artifacts gives it a retro feel, which is justified in the story. The world collapsed and they had to rebuild civilization. So it is believable that they do not recognize certain dilapidated artifacts that we do know, but the characters, having grown up in the Silo, only know what they have been told.
History is written by the victors. It is something that remains latent as we move forward. That world of secrets and lies in which the majority is immersed, is strongly defended by the supreme power within the Silo. Even some who occupy a position of power within the implanted political system, completely oblivious to the truth, are also part of the lie without knowing it.
There is a lot of potential in the story, I don't know if this first season covers the whole first book or just a part of it. Also, the cast each fulfills their roles. It's a pleasure to watch Tim Robbis and Will Patton, two actors with long careers that I always enjoy whatever their character. Only the character Sims, played by Common, is the one I found annoying and I feel that more could have been made of his work and not limited to the bad guy who makes bad gestures.
As a negative point, because it is not a perfect series, I must mention the problem that I perceive in many productions. There are chapters, like the one about the mechanical turbine fix, that for me are filler, making the story drag on too long, wasting time with subplots that could easily be solved in a few minutes. That's what I perceive, I'm getting older and time is more valuable.
Silo presents us with a dystopian future that we want to know more about. Especially after the cliffhanger of the last episode. A good proposal for those who like science fiction and with Rebecca Ferguson guiding us through that subway world that seems to hide many secrets.

Silo tiene un comienzo muy potente, en el que rápidamente se plantean interrogantes. Que nos harán preguntarnos qué demonios está pasando, y preguntarnos quién es realmente el villano de esta historia. El diseño de este universo subterráneo, con los mismos problemas políticos y económicos que vivimos arrastrando desde hace siglos, en este entorno distópico post-apocalíptico, es muy atractivo y se puede explotar bien.
Toda la parte de los decorados, el diseño del Silo, el uso de artefactos antiguos le da un aire retro, que está justificado en la historia. El mundo se derrumbó y tuvieron que reconstruir la civilización. Por eso es creíble que no reconozcan ciertos artefactos en mal estado que sí conocemos, pero los personajes, al haber crecido en el Silo, sólo saben lo que les han contado.
La historia la escriben los vencedores. Es algo que permanece latente a medida que avanzamos. Ese mundo de secretos y mentiras en el que está sumergida la mayoría, está fuertemente defendido por el poder supremo dentro del Silo. Incluso algunos que ocupan una posición de poder dentro del sistema político implantado, completamente ajenos a la verdad, también forman parte de la mentira sin saberlo.
Hay mucho potencial en la historia, no sé si esta primera temporada abarca todo el primer libro o sólo una parte. Además, el reparto cumple cada uno con su papel. Es un placer ver a Tim Robbis y Will Patton, dos actores con una larga carrera que siempre disfruto sea cual sea su personaje. Sólo el personaje Sims, interpretado por Common, es el que me resultó molesto y siento que se podría haber sacado más partido a su trabajo y no limitarlo al malo que hace malos gestos.
Como punto negativo, porque no es una serie perfecta, debo mencionar el problema que percibo en muchas producciones. Hay capítulos, como el del arreglo de la turbina mecánica, que para mí son de relleno, haciendo que la historia se alargue demasiado, perdiendo tiempo con subtramas que podrían resolverse fácilmente en unos minutos. Es lo que percibo, me hago mayor y el tiempo es más valioso.
Silo nos presenta un futuro distópico del que queremos saber más. Sobre todo después del cliffhanger del último episodio. Una buena propuesta para los que les guste la ciencia ficción y con Rebecca Ferguson guiándonos por ese mundo subterráneo que parece esconder muchos secretos.
