I recently finished watching The Red Rooms and it's a great film. I had it on my list since it was presented last year at the Sitges Film Festival and it's very unfair that it doesn't get as much exposure, but that's always the case. Some gems are hidden because distributors (and platforms) prefer films that are more to the taste of the majority.
This is the third feature by Canadian director Pascal Plante, whose first film, The False Tattoos, I had seen several years ago. A very remarkable work as it showed that the filmmaker has an undeniable talent for directing, I recommend you seek it out to check it out. I haven't seen his second film Nadia Mariposa, but I will try to look for it, because I was fascinated by The Red Rooms.
Defining the genre of the film may open a small debate among cinephiles. Although most of the entries in directories such as IMDB classify it as suspense, it is also a somewhat disturbing psychological thriller because some sequences provoke horror, which has been my case. It is a work that surprises with a beginning that seems like a courtroom movie, but as it progresses it takes a subtle but effective turn.
Hace poco terminé de ver The Red Rooms y es una gran película. La tenia en mi lista desde que se presentó el año pasado en el Festival de Sitges y es muy injusto que no tenga tanta difusión, pero siempre es así. Algunas joyas quedan ocultas porque las distribuidoras (y las plataformas) prefieren películas más afines al gusto de la mayoría.
Este es el tercer largometraje del director canadiense Pascal Plante, cuya primera película, Los falsos tatuajes, había visto hace varios años. Un trabajo muy destacable ya que demostraba que el cineasta tiene un talento innegable para la dirección, les recomiendo buscarla para echarle un vistazo. No he visto su segunda película Nadia Mariposa, pero intentaré buscarla, porque me ha dejado fascinado con Las habitaciones rojas.
Definir el género de la película puede abrir un pequeño debate entre cinéfilos. Aunque la mayoría de las entradas en directorios como IMDB la clasifican como suspense, también es un thriller psicológico algo perturbador porque algunas secuencias provocan horror, ese ha sido mi caso. Es una obra que sorprende con un comienzo que parece de película de tribunales, pero que a medida que avanza da un giro sutil pero efectivo.
What the filmmaker does with the camera is a marvel. The predominance of tracking shots in almost every scene makes the viewer feel uncomfortable. At the same time, the atmosphere is extremely cold. The courtroom, the lonely streets, the protagonist's flat. Locations with a cold and distant atmosphere, but instead of distancing the viewer from the story, they make the intrigue more attractive.
The handling of suspense is another of its attributes and how certain sequences increase it. There are sequences that disturbed me. They are disturbing, although there is nothing grotesque, there is nothing explicit. But that's why I highlight the filmmaker's skill, for making a scene of a woman in front of her computer screen keep me in suspense. There is also a scene inside the courtroom that is fantastic. I would have liked to have seen it on a cinema screen, but such films never make it to theatres in my country, and if they did, they would be ruined by the awful dubbing.
The story revolves around Kelly Anne, a beautiful woman who works as a model, has a very comfortable life and earns money with online poker and internet business. She attends the expected trial of Ludovic Chavalier, a serial killer nicknamed The Demon of Rosemont, accused of being the perpetrator of the murder of three underage girls by making snuff films. There he meets Clementine, a young woman in love with the accused who fervently believes in his innocence. But the big question is: what the hell is Kelly Anne doing attending the trial, what is she after, what does she want, what is she doing there?
Lo que el cineasta hace con la cámara es una maravilla. El predominio de los travelling en casi todas las escenas hace que el espectador se sienta incómodo. Al mismo tiempo, la atmósfera es extremadamente fría. La sala del tribunal, las calles solitarias, el piso del protagonista. Localizaciones con una atmósfera fría y distante, pero que en lugar de alejar al espectador de la historia, hacen más atractiva la intriga.
El manejo del suspense es otro de sus atributos y cómo determinadas secuencias lo incrementan. Hay secuencias que me han perturbado. Son inquietantes, aunque no hay nada grotesco, no hay nada explícito. Pero por eso destaco la habilidad del cineasta, por hacer que una escena de una mujer frente a la pantalla de su ordenador me mantenga en vilo. También hay una escena en el interior del tribunal que es fantástica. Me hubiera gustado verla en una pantalla de cine, pero este tipo de películas nunca llegan a las salas de mi país y, si lo hicieran, quedarían arruinadas por el horrible doblaje.
La historia gira en torno a Kelly Anne, una hermosa mujer que trabaja como modelo, tiene una vida muy cómoda y gana dinero con el póquer en línea y los negocios por Internet. Ella asiste al esperado juicio de Ludovic Chavalier, un asesino en serie apodado El Demonio de Rosemont, acusado de ser el autor del asesinato de tres chicas menores de edad mediante la realización de películas snuff. Allí conoce a Clementine, una joven enamorada del acusado que cree fervientemente en su inocencia. Pero la gran pregunta es: ¿qué demonios hace Kelly Anne asistiendo al juicio, qué persigue, qué quiere, qué hace allí?
Model and actress Juliette Gariepy plays Kelly Anne, deserving of the accolades and awards she received for that character. Her work is truly convincing. It is a role in which she is asked to show a lot with her eyes and she succeeds. She is the protagonist and we will see her descent to the dark side. She has everything, a great career, money, prestige, but the obsessions are stronger, those that lead us to commit crazy things to feel that moment of pleasure. What are her motivations? Why is she so interested in the murderer? Everything will become clear, but the journey will be unsettling.
I have taken note of another film by this actress. You Can Live Forever. I hope to see her soon, and hopefully she will get more offers. I think she has a lot of potential and it will be a pleasure to see her in upcoming productions. The rest of the cast is very little known. I don't remember having seen most of them, only Maxwell McCabe-Lokos is a familiar face from some supporting role in films or series that I don't remember. Perhaps because it is a film without celebrities it gets little attention.
A disturbing story about obsessions and the darker side of the human being. It's a pity that most people didn't like it.

La modelo y actriz Juliette Gariepy interpreta a Kelly Anne, merecedora de los elogios y premios que recibió por ese personaje. Su trabajo es realmente convincente. Es un papel en el que se le pide que muestre mucho con la mirada y lo consigue. Es la protagonista y veremos su descenso al lado oscuro. Lo tiene todo, una gran carrera, dinero, prestigio, pero son más fuertes las obsesiones, esas que nos llevan a cometer locuras para sentir ese momento de placer. ¿Cuáles son sus motivaciones? ¿Por qué está tan interesada en el asesino? Todo se aclarará, pero el viaje será inquietante.
He tomado nota de otra película de esta actriz. Puedes vivir para siempre. Espero verla pronto, y ojalá reciba más ofertas. Creo que tiene mucho potencial y será un placer verla en próximas producciones. El resto del reparto es muy poco conocido. No recuerdo haber visto a la mayoría, sólo Maxwell McCabe-Lokos es una cara conocida de algún papel secundario en películas o series que no recuerdo. Quizás por ser una película sin famosos recibe poca atención.
Una historia inquietante sobre las obsesiones y la parte más oscura del ser humano. Lástima que no haya gustado a la mayoría.
