More than a month after having seen it, I finally have the courage to express my opinion on this film that has been getting a lot of stick and stones since its release.
Más de un mes después de haberla visto, por fin me animo a expresar mi opinión sobre esta película que ha recibido palos y pedradas desde su estreno.
I really wanted to see the new film by Luis Estrada, a filmmaker I started following more than twenty years ago, when he released what for me is still his best film: La ley de Herodes (Herod's Law). It was a film with an accurate black humor with social and political criticism that swept the Ariel awards at the time.
Subsequently, Estrada built a tetralogy of acid criticism of his country's governments: Un mundo maravilloso, El infierno and La Dictadura Perfecta were added to La Ley de Herodes. Now, with the release of ¡Que Viva México! a pentalogy is made, this last film being the weakest of the set.
Evidently, the film features the performance of his fetish actor, who has been in all the films of the pentalogy. Damián Alcázar is an actor I admire, some may criticize his performance, as well as that of the rest of the cast, but I think they all gave their best, they just followed the director's instructions and surely had fun.
I feel the same sympathy for the actor Joaquín Cosió, an actor I like, even when he plays villains, as in the series Narcos Mexico. It is true that in many of his films, especially when they are comedies, he repeats many gestures. He has always reminded me of Capulina, a Mexican movie star whose comedies I used to watch on TV in my childhood.
Both actors have a lot of presence in the film, because they play several characters, how do you explain it? Well, as all the characters are part of the same family, it is logical to see the same faces in different characters, they also helped with some makeup. The cast is large, some like Angelina Pelaez, Ana de la Reguera and Alfonso Herrera I knew who they were and their previous work, others I didn't know. I don't want to make wood from the fallen tree, that's why the work of all of them seems correct to me, their characters are stereotypes wrapped in cliché situations.
Tenía muchas ganas de ver la nueva película de Luis Estrada, un cineasta al que empecé a seguir hace más de veinte años, cuando estrenó la que para mí sigue siendo su mejor película: La ley de Herodes. Era una película con un acertado humor negro con crítica social y política que arrasó en los premios Ariel de la época.
Posteriormente, Estrada construyó una tetralogía de ácida crítica a los gobiernos de su país: Un mundo maravilloso, El infierno y La Dictadura Perfecta se sumaron a La Ley de Herodes. Ahora, con el lanzamiento de ¡Que Viva México! se hace una pentalogía, siendo esta última película la más floja del conjunto.
Evidentemente, la película cuenta con la actuación de su actor fetiche, que ha estado en todas las películas de la pentalogía. Damián Alcázar es un actor que admiro, algunos podrán criticar su actuación, así como la del resto del elenco, pero creo que todos dieron lo mejor de sí, sólo siguieron las instrucciones del director y seguramente se divirtieron.
Siento la misma simpatía por el actor Joaquín Cosió, un actor que me gusta, incluso cuando interpreta a villanos, como en la serie Narcos México. Es cierto que en muchas de sus películas, sobre todo cuando son comedias, repite muchos gestos. Siempre me ha recordado a Capulina, una estrella del cine mexicano cuyas comedias veía en televisión en mi infancia.
Ambos actores tienen mucha presencia en la película, porque interpretan a varios personajes, ¿Cómo lo explica? Bueno, como todos los personajes son parte de la misma familia, es lógico ver las mismas caras en diferentes personajes, también ayudaron con algo de maquillaje. El reparto es amplio, algunos como Angelina Peláez, Ana de la Reguera y Alfonso Herrera sabía quienes eran y sus trabajos anteriores, otros, no los conocía. No quiero hacer leña del árbol caído, por eso el trabajo de todos ellos me parece correcto, sus personajes son estereotipos envueltos en situaciones clichés.
I had high expectations for the film and unfortunately they were not met. The first hour and a quarter, the movie managed to get a few laughs out of me. I have no problem with vulgar, scatological and crude humor, there are things in that type of comedy that can make me laugh. The problem is that those easy laugh jokes are constantly dragged out and repeated, until the joke loses all meaning, producing boredom. I found the mariachis over and over again very tiresome. I like more the acid humor, sharp, which for example was present in the film Herod's Law, but here it is conspicuous by its absence.
When the repetition of situations begins to tire, we are barely halfway through the film, which lasts more than three hours. This is undoubtedly the other major flaw of the story. Too long, for what it wants to tell. I have nothing against long movies either, on the contrary, most of my favorites are always long movies, but the story must keep the interest, instead, here it falls a lot. After that first part that works as a presentation of characters, comes the development of the conflict that is not so long and everything could be summarized in a better way.
When it was released, many professional critics called it the filmmaker's worst film. On twitter, most of the opinions were negative, many of them insulting the filmmaker. I watched this closely, as supporters of the current president of that country were launching harsh criticism, and when you have power, you use bots on social networks to induce the consumer. Although Estrada received criticism not only from his current administration, but also from opposition politicians and ordinary viewers.
Tenía muchas expectativas puestas en la película y desgraciadamente no se cumplieron. La primera hora y cuarto, la película consiguió arrancarme unas cuantas carcajadas. No tengo ningún problema con el humor vulgar, escatológico y grosero, hay cosas en ese tipo de comedia que me pueden hacer reír. El problema es que esos chistes de risa fácil se alargan y se repiten constantemente, hasta que el chiste pierde todo su sentido, produciendo aburrimiento. Los mariachis una y otra vez me resultaron muy cansinos. Me gusta más el humor ácido, punzante, que por ejemplo estaba presente en la película La ley de Herodes, pero aquí brilla por su ausencia.
Cuando la repetición de situaciones empieza a cansar, apenas llevamos la mitad de la película, que dura más de tres horas. Este es, sin duda, el otro gran defecto de la historia. Demasiado larga, para lo que quiere contar. Tampoco tengo nada en contra de las películas largas, al contrario, la mayoría de mis favoritas son siempre películas largas, pero la historia debe mantener el interés, en cambio, aquí decae mucho. Después de esa primera parte que funciona como presentación de personajes, viene el desarrollo del conflicto que no es tan largo y todo se podría resumir de mejor manera.
Cuando se estrenó, muchos críticos profesionales la calificaron como la peor película del cineasta. En twitter, la mayoría de las opiniones eran negativas, muchas de ellas insultando al cineasta. Observé esto con atención, ya que los partidarios del actual presidente de ese país lanzaban duras críticas, y cuando se tiene poder, se utilizan bots en las redes sociales para inducir al consumidor. Aunque Estrada recibió críticas no sólo de su actual gobierno, sino también de políticos de la oposición y espectadores de a pie.
It should be noted that Luis Estrada is openly leftist and voted for the current ruler of his country, but quickly became disillusioned with his leader. In the film he throws some darts against the current government, but not as forcefully as he did against all previous governments in other films. I hope that in a next film he will attack more forcefully. I respect him as a filmmaker, but I don't respect his political ideas.
It seems that Estrada has hurt that feeling of pride and love for his land, I understand all those who criticize that he has only focused on showing the poor as the main culprits of their problems. It is the poor characters who, because of their own inordinate ambition and trickery, end up looking bad, complaining, blaming others, being themselves their own worst enemy. The wealthy social class is also shown, in minor scenes, but equally ambitious and very classist.
Hay que señalar que Luis Estrada es abiertamente de izquierdas y el voto por el actual gobernante de su país, pero se desilusionó rápidamente con su líder. En la película lanza algunos dardos contra el gobierno actual, pero no con tanta fuerza como lo hizo contra todos los gobiernos anteriores en otras películas. Espero que en una próxima película ataque con más fuerza. Le respeto como cineasta, pero no respeto sus ideas políticas.
Parece que Estrada ha herido ese sentimiento de orgullo y amor por su tierra, entiendo a todos aquellos que critican que sólo se haya centrado en mostrar a los pobres como los principales culpables de sus problemas. Son los personajes pobres los que, por su propia ambición desmedida y artimañas, acaban quedando mal, quejándose, culpando a los demás, siendo ellos mismos su peor enemigo. La clase social acomodada también es mostrada, en escenas menores, pero igualmente ambiciosa y muy clasista.
So I understand the wounds that the film can touch in a society full of conflicts. But I wonder, is there a lie in all its clichés? Some time ago someone from Mexico told me that it was no secret that in his country, someone with white skin and light eyes has a better chance of being hired in a good company than someone with brown skin or indigenous features. Likewise, if you are from a family with a respected last name. I also heard it in a video of a couple of Youtubers who visited that country , one of their hosts, told her that the girl , being white and foreign, it would be easy for her to get a job. does that discrimination exist? classism? I can't say for sure, I'm just saying what I was told and heard.
Human beings do not like their reflection in the mirror to be ugly. That's why they lie to themselves with their own photos on social networks, with filters and beautifying effects. The same happens when movies show something of reality, that which we don't like about ourselves. Maybe that's why it has caused so much scorn. It takes all the defects and agglutinates them in that small universe of the Reyes family. Foul-mouthed, ill-mannered, ordinary, ugly, drunk, ambitious, poor. I didn't see much difference with my country, I think if we change the actors and dialogues with native words and put those of my country, the story and the message would also fit.
¡Que Viva Mexico! It has a first part that made me laugh and then it fell apart. Is it good or bad? That's up to you as a viewer, I always recommend watching movies, no matter if it's good or bad.

Por eso entiendo las heridas que la película puede tocar en una sociedad llena de conflictos. Pero me pregunto, ¿hay una mentira en todos sus clichés? Hace algún tiempo alguien de México me dijo que no era un secreto que en su país, alguien de piel blanca y ojos claros tiene más posibilidades de ser contratado en una buena empresa que alguien de piel morena o rasgos indígenas. Igualmente, si eres de una familia con un apellido respetado. También lo escuche en un video de un par de Youtubers que visitaron ese país , uno de sus anfitriones, le dijo que la chica , al ser blanca y extranjera, le sería fácil conseguir trabajo. ¿existe esa discriminación? ¿clasismo? No puedo asegurarlo, sólo digo lo que me dijeron y oí.
A los seres humanos no les gusta que su reflejo en el espejo sea feo. Por eso se mienten a sí mismos con sus propias fotos en las redes sociales, con filtros y efectos embellecedores. Lo mismo ocurre cuando las películas muestran algo de la realidad, aquello que no nos gusta de nosotros mismos. Quizá por eso ha causado tanto desprecio. Coge todos los defectos y los aglutina en ese pequeño universo de la familia Reyes. Malhablados, maleducados, ordinarios, feos, borrachos, ambiciosos, pobres. No vi mucha diferencia con mi país, creo que si cambiamos los actores y los diálogos con palabras nativas y ponemos las de mi país, la historia y el mensaje también encajarían.
¡Que Viva México! Tiene una primera parte que me hizo gracia y luego se vino abajo. ¿Es buena o mala? Eso depende de ti como espectador, siempre recomiendo ver las películas, no importa si es buena o mala.
