Since last year I was waiting to enjoy Holy Spider, a film by Iranian-born director Ali Abbasi, after it was screened at my favorite film festival, Cannes, where his leading actress received an award for her performance. Practically a year later I have been able to see it, they say that good things come to those who wait and it has certainly been worth it, it has fulfilled my expectations.
The story is based on real events that occurred in the early 2000s in Iran, a time when the director was still living in Tehran and shortly after moved to Europe, where he obtained another nationality, studied and developed his film career. The film is a thriller, a serial killer is killing and a journalist investigating, but it serves to show the world the problems of women in extremely fundamentalist countries.
To open our minds a little and understand that certain behaviors do not fit with our western lifestyle, we must understand the culture, laws and religion where the story takes place. I emphasize this, because I have seen about three totally absurd opinions about the movie, labeling some things as implausible. Although I have not been to Iran, a few years ago I was able to ask someone who worked in an embassy there, about various issues, including women's rights, and it was really shocking what he told me about so many prohibitions and severe punishments.
The main plot of the movie is of the serial killer genre, another fascinating subject for me. Even more so if it is based on real events and set in a Muslim country, with a culture so different from mine. Will they be more effective in stopping such predators? We might think so, but the reality is that religious extremism is as dangerous as any other totalitarian regime. Even more dangerous, because it is unbelievable that in the 21st century some societies still act as if we were ten centuries ago.
Desde el año pasado esperaba poder disfrutar de Holy Spider, una película del director de origen iraní Ali Abbasi, después de que se proyectara en mi festival de cine favorito, Cannes, donde su actriz protagonista recibió un premio por su interpretación. Prácticamente un año después he podido verla, dicen que lo bueno se hace esperar y desde luego ha merecido la pena, ha cumplido mis expectativas.
La historia está basada en hechos reales ocurridos a principios de los años 2000 en Irán, época en la que el director aún vivía en Teherán y poco después se trasladó a Europa, donde obtuvo otra nacionalidad, estudió y desarrolló su carrera cinematográfica. La película es un thriller, un serial killer esta asesinando y una periodista investigando, pero sirve para mostrar al mundo los problemas de las mujeres en países extremadamente fundamentalistas.
Para abrir un poco la mente y entender que ciertos comportamientos no encajan con nuestro estilo de vida occidental , debemos entender la cultura, las leyes y la religión donde se desarrolla la historia. Hago hincapié en esto, porque he visto unas tres opiniones totalmente absurdas sobre la película, tachando algunas cosas de inverosímiles. Aunque no he estado en Irán, hace unos años pude preguntar a alguien que trabajaba en una embajada allí, sobre diversos temas, entre ellos los derechos de la mujer, y fue realmente impactante lo que me contó sobre tantas prohibiciones y severos castigos.
La trama principal de la película es del género de asesinos en serie, otro tema fascinante para mí. Más aún si está basada en hechos reales y ambientada en un país musulmán, con una cultura tan diferente a la mía. ¿Serán más eficaces a la hora de detener a ese tipo de depredadores? Podríamos pensar que sí, pero la realidad es que el extremismo religioso es tan peligroso como cualquier otro régimen totalitario. Incluso más peligroso, porque es increíble que en el siglo XXI algunas sociedades sigan actuando como si estuviéramos diez siglos atrás.
A woman alone goes to stay in a hotel. I repeat: Alone. The fact that she is not with her "husband" is a problem and they lie to her telling her that there are no rooms, as the Moral Police are always watching her. Until she claims to be a journalist, they deign to accept her as a guest. That simple scene tells us too much, that scene alone tells us that in that society women do not have much freedom, that they are treated as second-class citizens and that they must always be subordinated to the decisions of a man.
It will not be the only moment that shows us all the problems a woman must face in this culture. Rahimi, the woman protagonist of this story, is a journalist who has been unjustly blamed for something in the past, her morals are tainted and this has brought her personal and work repercussions. Perhaps that is why she feels the great need to help women prostitutes who are being murdered by a predator, in the face of the ineffectiveness of a police and political leaders who do not seem to care.
Morality. Always used by various cultures throughout human history to justify the commission of horrible acts. Paradoxically, those who defend morality, most of the time turn out to be complete hypocrites who do not even comply with what they proclaim, using moral laws to commit immoral acts, such as the mistreatment of women. At one point the film caused me repulsion, because of the sad reality shown.
Prostitution in that kind of culture is an extremely taboo subject, I think there are not many movies set in that part of the world that touch that subject, well, I have not seen, maybe I have missed several, I will have to search thoroughly and try to see more movies with stories developed in those places. The truth is that being a prostitute is for them something so immoral, that these women become social pariahs, rejected even by their own relatives, who often stay taking care of the grandchildren, so that they do not become another disgrace for the family.
Religious fundamentalism, like any totalitarian doctrine, fanaticizes its followers to the extreme, so that at any moment any of them can take action and start their own jihad against immorality, their personal crusade in the name of God, to cleanse the world of sin, of moral corruption. Even if to do so they commit murder, one of the most immoral acts that can exist.
Isolated acts condemned by the majority? No, the worst thing is when these criminals end up having the sympathy and support of society, and can even be described as heroes by the population and religious, political authorities. To me this is a total aberration, from my Western point of view. But the real terror is what comes after some sort of justice is done....
Una mujer sola va a alojarse a un hotel. Repito: Sola. El hecho de que no esté con su "marido" es un problema y le mienten diciéndole que no hay habitaciones, ya que la Policía Moral está siempre vigilándola. Hasta que ella dice ser periodista, se dignan a aceptarla como huésped. Esa simple escena nos dice demasiado, esa sola escena nos dice que en esa sociedad las mujeres no tienen mucha libertad, que son tratadas como ciudadanas de segunda y que deben estar siempre subordinadas a las decisiones de un hombre.
No será el único momento que nos muestre todos los problemas a los que debe enfrentarse una mujer en esta cultura. Rahimi, la mujer protagonista de esta historia, es una periodista que ha sido injustamente culpada por algo en el pasado, su moral está manchada y eso le ha traído repercusiones personales y laborales. Quizá por eso siente la gran necesidad de ayudar a las mujeres prostitutas que están siendo asesinadas por un depredador, ante la ineficacia de una policía y unos dirigentes políticos a los que no parece importarles.
Moralidad. Siempre utilizada por diversas culturas a lo largo de la historia de la humanidad, para justificar la comisión de actos horribles. Paradójicamente, aquellos que defienden la moral, la mayoría de las veces resultan ser unos completos hipócritas que ni siquiera cumplen lo que proclaman, utilizando las leyes morales para cometer actos inmorales, como el maltrato a las mujeres. En un momento dado la película me causó repulsión, por la triste realidad mostrada.
La prostitución en ese tipo de cultura es un tema sumamente tabú, creo que no hay muchas películas ambientadas en esa parte del mundo que toquen ese tema, bueno, yo no he visto, tal vez me he perdido varias, tendré que buscar a fondo y tratar de ver más películas con historias desarrolladas en esos lugares. La verdad es que ser prostituta es para ellos algo tan inmoral, que esas mujeres se convierten en parias sociales, rechazadas hasta por sus propios familiares, que muchas veces se quedan cuidando a los nietos, para que no sean otra desgracia para la familia.
El fundamentalismo religioso, como cualquier doctrina totalitaria, fanatiza hasta el extremo a sus seguidores, de modo que en cualquier momento cualquiera de ellos puede pasar a la acción e iniciar su propia yihad contra la inmoralidad, su cruzada personal en nombre de Dios, para limpiar el mundo de pecado, de corrupción moral. Aunque para ello cometan un asesinato, uno de los actos más inmorales que pueden existir.
¿Actos aislados condenados por la mayoría? No, lo peor es cuando esos criminales acaban teniendo la simpatía y el apoyo de la sociedad, e incluso pueden ser calificados de héroes por la población y las autoridades religiosas, políticas. Para mí es una aberración total, desde mi punto de vista occidental. Pero el verdadero terror es lo que viene después de que se haga algún tipo de justicia...
The last few minutes of the film are, for me, the most terrifying. It immediately reminded me of a scene from the documentary The Arc of Killing, because it sent the same shiver throughout my body. I'm not scared of fantasy monsters, made-up killer clowns, ghosts or fantasy Chucky, Jason and Freddy. I experience real terror when I see that sacred spiders are real beings, with families, a life together and that they are not alone. You can kill one of these spiders, but there will be others waiting to continue the work that the other one left incomplete. So it's a few minutes of true horror.
The structure of the film is fairly conventional, following the established patterns of the serial killer genre. We will know who he is from the beginning, we will observe his life, his routine, his past, his faith and also his internal struggle, because like every moral defender, he is actually trying to repress his basest carnal desires. To me, using his faith as justification is really an excuse. He does what he does because he is a weak man, who cannot avoid the temptation of desire and believes that by killing the prostitutes, he will be able to eliminate them all and will no longer have desire for them. A hypocrite.
I liked that he shows several of the murders, quite crudely, without embellishment or poetry, because real death is dirty and ugly. I think the filmmaker does a superb job , I had seen a couple of previous works and he even directed an episode of The Last to Us. I found the pacing to be adequate, it doesn't let up, when it seems to drag on, it surprises us with the encounter between the journalist and the killer, which is a twist in the story, showing the theme of justice and the socio-political implications.
Holy Spiders another excellent film from last year at Cannes. A thriller with social ramifications in a world perhaps alien to many of us, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It is based on real events and many of the problems exposed are still happening today.

Los últimos minutos de la película son, para mí, los más aterradores. Me recordó inmediatamente a una escena del documental The Arc of Killing, porque me hizo sentir el mismo escalofrío por todo el cuerpo. No me asustan los monstruos de fantasía, los payasos asesinos inventados, los fantasmas o los Chucky, Jason y Freddy de fantasía. Experimento verdadero terror cuando veo que las arañas sagradas son seres reales, con familias, una vida en común y que no están solas. Puedes matar a una de estas arañas, pero habrá otras esperando para continuar el trabajo que la otra dejó incompleto. Por eso son unos minutos de auténtico horror.
La estructura de la película es bastante convencional, siguiendo los patrones establecidos por el género de asesinos en serie. Sabremos quién es desde el principio, observaremos su vida, su rutina, su pasado, su fe y también su lucha interna, porque como todo defensor de la moral, en realidad está intentando reprimir sus más bajos deseos carnales. Para mí, usar su fe como justificación, es en realidad una excusa. Hace lo que hace porque es un hombre débil, que no puede evitar la tentación del deseo y cree que matando a las prostitutas, lograra eliminárlas a todas y ya no tendrá deseo por ellas. Un hipócrita.
Me gustó que mostrará varios de los asesinatos, con bastante crudeza, sin embellecimineto ni poesía, porque la muerte real es sucia y fea. Creo que el cineasta hace un magnifico trabajo , ya había visto un par de trabajos anteriores e incluso dirigió un episodio de The Last to Us. El ritmo me pareció adecuado, no decae, cuando parece que se alarga, nos sorprende con el encuentro entre el periodista y el asesino, que es un giro en la historia, mostrando el tema de la justicia y las implicaciones sociopolíticas.
Holy Spiders otra excelente película del año pasado en Cannes. Un thriller con ramificaciones sociales en un mundo quizás ajeno a muchos de nosotros, pero que no quiere decir que no exista. Está basado en hechos reales y muchos de los problemas expuestos siguen sucediendo hoy en día.
