Fancy Dance would be filmmaker Erica Tremblay's first fiction film. She has experience in some TV series and short documentaries of her own, but with this film she takes a big step forward. I love to see debut features, for me it's fascinating to see proposals from diverse filmmakers. In this case, the director stays true to a recurring theme, capturing the realities of Native Americans, and she carries it in her roots, in her blood, being of Native American origin.
The work may have parts that are not solid enough to make an impact. In the transition of the story I had the feeling that many flanks were opened, it tries to cover a lot and some elements can divert attention from the central focus. What cannot be denied is that it is a film that seeks to sensitize, without falling into an exaggerated melodrama, that is what I liked a lot.
Fancy Dance sería la primera película de ficción de la cineasta Erica Tremblay. Ella tiene experiencia en algunas series de televisión y cortos documentales propios, pero con esta película da un gran paso adelante. Me encanta ver óperas primas, para mí es fascinante ver propuestas de cineastas diversos. En este caso, la directora se mantiene fiel a un tema recurrente, plasmar las realidades de los nativos americanos, y lo lleva en sus raíces, en su sangre, al ser de origen nativo americano.
La obra puede tiene partes que no son lo suficientemente sólidas como para impactar. En la transición de la historia tuve la sensación de que se abrían muchos flancos, intenta abarcar mucho y algunos elementos pueden desviar la atención del foco central. Lo que no se puede negar es que es una película que busca sensibilizar, sin caer en un melodrama exagerado, eso es lo que me gustó mucho.
The hard life in the American reservations, the indifferent look of the authorities in the face of the disappearance of Native American women, the inequality and injustice of a bureaucratic system that pretends to be perfect, but only causes greater havoc in people's lives. Laws that pretend to be fair, but in the end only separate families, where the weak are the ones who will always bear the brunt.
The hypocrisy of those who take over a territory and still pretend to be the good guys. This is what is represented by the character of Nancy, a white woman ignorant of the old traditions of a people, who believes that what she is doing is for the good of Roki. It is the hypocrisy of a whole society that believes itself to be the strongest and that, directly or indirectly, seems to want to erase the traditions passed down for several generations. All this is magnificently expressed in a scene in which Roki explains to him that the Powwow is more than a dance, it is a connection.
The presence of a state that is governed by laws that seem to apply more severely when skin color or ethnicity is not of the victors. There are many nuances to the story that would have worked better if they had chosen to make it in miniseries format.
I could sense a restrained anger. Maybe the filmmaker softens some things so as not to make a harsher critique. Maybe it's not the time, he needs financing. If he continues with his career and gets more success, there will be time for him to do something with more impact.
La dura vida en las reservas americanas, la mirada indiferente de las autoridades ante la desaparición de mujeres nativas americanas, la desigualdad y la injusticia de un sistema burocrático que pretende ser perfecto, pero que sólo causa mayores estragos en la vida de las personas. Leyes que pretenden ser justas, pero que al final sólo separan familias, donde los débiles son los que siempre llevarán la peor parte.
La hipocresía de quienes se apropian de un territorio y siguen pretendiendo ser los buenos. Es lo que representa el personaje de Nancy, una mujer blanca ignorante de las viejas tradiciones de un pueblo, que cree que lo que hace es por el bien de Roki. Es la hipocresía de toda una sociedad que se cree la más fuerte y que, de forma directa o indirecta, parece querer borrar las tradiciones transmitidas durante varias generaciones. Todo esto queda magníficamente expresado en una escena en la que Roki le explica que el Powwow es más que un baile, es una conexión.
La presencia de un Estado que se rige por leyes que parecen aplicarse con mayor severidad cuando el color de la piel o la etnia no es de los vencedores. Hay muchos matices en la historia que habrían funcionado mejor si hubiesen elegido hacerla en formato miniserie.
Pude percibir una rabia contenida. Quizá el cineasta suaviza algunas cosas para no hacer una crítica más dura. Quizá no es el momento, necesita financiarse. Si continúa con su carrera y consigue más éxito, ya habrá tiempo para que haga algo con más repercusión.
Something that gave this film a boost is its leading lady, Lily Gladstone, taking advantage of the fact that she was nominated for an Oscar and won other awards for Killers of Flower Moon. She's living her moment and should take advantage of it as much as she can. I recently saw her in the miniseries Under the Brigde and I'm looking forward to Jazzy, another film where she stars. I hope she keeps getting offers. She seems committed to stories that showcase Native American culture.
Gladstone continues to string together good characters, to which she brings a lot of sensitivity. She is an actress I like. She excels in her portrayal of Jax, a woman who makes her living on the reservation, with a criminal record, something she continues to do by stealing. She is the only one who seems to be more concerned about her sister Tawi's disappearance and keeps Roki, in her care. Jax is Roki's aunt and fate has placed her in the role of the other mother.
The young actress Isabel Deroy-Olson plays Roki. I'm not sure if this is her debut, I didn't know this actress and I haven't found a previous fimography. She is very young and her talent shows here. Keep an eye out for these discoveries who may become big stars in the future. She is charming with her character Roki, because she conveys innocence, fear and at the same time a great strength for her culture,
Fancy Dance is a small film but big in its message. Necessary cinema made to touch our sensibility.

Está viviendo su momento y debe aprovecharlo todo lo que pueda. Hace poco la vi en la miniserie Under the Brigde y estoy esperando Jazzy, otra película donde ella es la protagonista.
