I am a consumer of TV series and in my post I will give my opinion about Dexter New Blood, an additional season of Dexter after years of it ending, where they tried to fix the mess of its conclusion. The other series is Ray Donovan, another one of my favorites and a few days ago they released a long episode, which they called Ray Donovan the Movie, to end the series.
I must warn that my opinion may contain some spoilers for those who have not seen any of these series, you decide, if you continue reading the post and if you already saw them you can read at your leisure...

La otra serie es Ray Donovan, otra de mis favoritas y hace unos días estrenaron un episodio largo, que llamaron Ray Donovan the Movie, para terminar la serie.

Which one to start with? I'm undecided. Especially because one of the endings hasn't lived up to expectations. Guess which one? Read on, you'll soon find out.
Anyway, I have to be thankful that the attempt was made. One of them had an ending that upset a lot of fans and that's why they created a new season, to fix the mess they had made. I will not be so hard on it, out of respect and because I love the character.
With the other series I will also be kind, because I should be grateful that they took the trouble to give a decent ending to the whole story, after abruptly announcing the cancellation of the series. For me it was a surprise to learn that they had made a telefilm, a gesture of respect to the fans of the series. We deserved to be given an ending.

Para mí fue una sorpresa saber que habían hecho un telefilme, un gesto de respeto a los fans de la serie. Merecíamos que nos dieran un final.
Dexter: New Blood
It's been 16 years since the premiere of the first season of Dexter. A series that immediately became one of my favorites and whose first seasons were great. The origin of the series is literary, it is an adaptation to the small screen of the character created by Jeff Lindsay for his novels. I have them all in digital format, but I admit that I have not read any of them, I acquired them after the premiere of the series but in all these years I have not been able to read them.
Dexter Morgan is a fascinating character and the series was a great success, those were the times when the Showtime television network stood out with excellent productions. The appeal of Dexter is that he was a forensic specialist of the Miami police, who had been adopted by a policeman who, seeing the psychopath inside his son's mind, decides to teach him a code, turning him into a serial killer who only kills bad people. The code is strict, he must get enough evidence of guilt for Dexter to put it on his execution table and indulge in freeing his dark passenger.
By that time we had already seen many series whose protagonists were amoral, corrupt, criminals, mobsters. But Dexter's impact on the audience had to do with the fact that he was a complete psychopath, a serial killer for whom we felt sympathy and wanted everything to go right for him. Fans loved seeing how Dexter managed to overcome every obstacle and I especially enjoyed seeing the look of satisfaction on the character's face as he executed each of his victims. He was a psychopath who acted as a vigilante, though along the way he also spilled innocent blood, so as not to get caught, which in theory, was a violation of his code.
From his first seasons I remember the resource of listening to Dexter's thoughts, on multiple occasions with a good load of black humor. I remember a scene in which Dexer visits a nightclub crowded with teenagers drinking and fooling around at their age, while we hear Dexter say: here it is, this is the future of America.
Its first season laid all the groundwork for the development of the series, its second season solidified that groundwork and I fell in love with the character of Lila, another psychopath (it wouldn't be the last) that Dexter would eventually cross paths with. The third season had a bit of a dip for my taste, but it was still very entertaining, because I loved seeing Dexter in his suit and all full of plastic to deliver the final blow to all the other killers. Dexter was very smart, slick and attentive to every detail, because one of the rules of the code is not to get caught.
The apotheosis came with the fourth season. For me the best of the whole series. It was wonderful the work done by the screenwriters with the addition of the character The Trinity Killer, played by an actor of the stature of John Lithgow. Trinity was like an older, intelligent and ruthless version of Dexter. The perfect nemesis for our favorite serial killer, a duel in which everyone would lose. An ending that left me heartbroken, but beautifully executed, bitterly bidding farewell to the noblest character in the series, Rita. A sad ending for her, an irreparable loss and one that would mark the birth in blood of Harrison, Dexter's son was a baby who seemed destined to walk the same painful path as his father.
Sometimes I think that would have been the perfect closure for the series, because what came after that were a few seasons with small flashes of genius, but which the screenwriters took it upon themselves to spoil with a diversity of plots that never lived up to the fourth season. None of the following antagonists could top the killer Trinity. I did like the female characters that were added throughout the seasons, each serving as support for Dexter in some way. But the series gradually lost its charm, ran out of steam by dragging out some revelations and concluded with a finale that almost all fans felt angry about. The series finale in 2013 was a disaster.
The creators were aware that they had made a mediocre ending for such an iconic series. That's why, nine years after the controversial finale, they decided to make amends with a miniseries called Dexter New Blood. But......
Could they top themselves and make it worse, OMG! It may seem unbelievable, but from my point of view, they made something worse that was already badly done. These people are supposed to be experts and I expected them to fix the mess, but what they did was another mess, what were they thinking?
Han pasado 16 años desde el estreno de la primera temporada de Dexter. Una serie que inmediatamente se convirtió en una de mis favoritas y cuyas primeras temporadas fueron geniales. El origen de la serie es literario, es una adaptación a la pequeña pantalla del personaje creado por Jeff Lindsay para sus novelas. Las tengo todas en formato digital, pero reconozco que no he leído ninguna, las adquirí tras el estreno de la serie pero en todos estos años no he podido leerlas.
Dexter Morgan es un personaje fascinante y la serie fue un gran éxito, eran los tiempos en los que la cadena de televisión Showtime despuntaba con excelentes producciones. El atractivo de Dexter es que era un especialista forense de la policía de Miami, que había sido adoptado por un policía que, al ver al psicópata que estaba dentro de la mente de su hijo, decide enseñarle un código, convirtiéndolo en un asesino en serie que sólo mata a gente mala. El código es estricto, debe conseguir suficientes pruebas de culpabilidad para que Dexter las ponga en su mesa de ejecución y se dé el gusto de liberar a su oscuro pasajero.
Por aquel entonces ya habíamos visto muchas series cuyos protagonistas eran amorales, corruptos, criminales, mafiosos. Pero el impacto de Dexter entre la audiencia tenía que ver con el hecho de que era un completo psicópata, un asesino en serie por el que sentíamos simpatía y queríamos que todo le saliera bien. A los fans les encantaba ver cómo Dexter se las arreglaba para superar cada obstáculo y yo disfrutaba especialmente viendo la mirada de satisfacción del personaje mientras ejecutaba a cada una de sus víctimas. Era un psicópata que actuaba como un justiciero, aunque por el camino también derramaba sangre inocente, para no ser atrapado, lo que en teoría, era una violación de su código.
De sus primeras temporadas recuerdo el recurso de escuchar los pensamientos de Dexter, en múltiples ocasiones con una buena carga de humor negro. Recuerdo una escena en la que Dexer visita un club nocturno abarrotado de adolescentes bebiendo y haciendo tonterías propias de su edad, mientras oímos a Dexter decir: aquí está, este es el futuro de América.
Su primera temporada sentó todas las bases para el desarrollo de la serie, su segunda temporada solidificó esas bases y me enamoré del personaje de Lila, otra psicópata (no sería la última) con la que Dexter acabaría cruzándose. La tercera temporada tuvo un pequeño bajón para mi gusto, pero seguía siendo muy entretenida, porque me encantaba ver a Dexter con su traje y todo lleno de plástico para dar el golpe final a todos los demás asesinos. Dexter era muy inteligente, hábil y estaba atento a cada detalle, porque una de las reglas del código es no dejarse atrapar.
La apoteosis llegó con la cuarta temporada. Para mí la mejor de toda la serie. Fue maravilloso el trabajo realizado por los guionistas con la incorporación del personaje El Asesino Trinity, interpretado por un actor de la talla de John Lithgow. Trinity era como una versión mayor, inteligente y despiadada de Dexter. La némesis perfecta para nuestro asesino en serie favorito, un duelo en el que todos perderían. Un final que me dejó desconsolado, pero bellamente ejecutado, despidiendo amargamente al personaje más noble de la serie, Rita. Un final triste para ella, una pérdida irreparable y que marcaría el nacimiento en sangre de Harrison, el hijo de Dexter era un bebé que parecía destinado a recorrer el mismo camino doloroso que su padre.
A veces pienso que ese hubiera sido el cierre perfecto para la serie, porque lo que vino después fueron unas cuantas temporadas con pequeños destellos de genialidad, pero que los guionistas se encargaron de estropear con una diversidad de tramas que nunca estuvieron a la altura de la cuarta temporada. Ninguno de los siguientes antagonistas pudo superar al asesino Trinity. Sí me gustaron los personajes femeninos que se fueron añadiendo a lo largo de las temporadas, cada uno de ellos sirviendo de apoyo a Dexter de alguna manera. Pero la serie fue perdiendo su encanto, se agotó alargando algunas revelaciones y concluyó con un final por el que casi todos los fans se sintieron enfadados. El final de la serie en 2013 fue un desastre.
Los creadores eran conscientes de que habían hecho un final mediocre para una serie tan emblemática. Por eso, nueve años después del polémico final, decidieron resarcirse con una miniserie llamada Dexter New Blood. Pero......
¿Podrían superarse a sí mismos y hacerlo peor? ¡OMG! Puede parecer increíble, pero desde mi punto de vista, hicieron peor algo que ya estaba mal hecho. Se supone que esta gente es experta y yo esperaba que arreglaran el desaguisado, pero lo que hicieron fue otro desaguisado, ¿en qué estaban pensando?
Dexter New Blood, the new ending devised for our beloved killer, shows us a Dexter Morgan with another identity (Jim) in a seemingly very quiet town, he is the boyfriend of the town Sheriff and uses his techniques of getting along with everyone to go unnoticed. The ghost of his sister Debra accompanies him. The dark passenger is hidden, but the thirst for blood, accumulated for so many years and the encounter with a young character will make his dark passenger resurface. All coinciding with the sudden appearance of Harrinson, his son, now a teenager, raised in Argentina by Hannah. He's just looking for answers, he wants to know why his father abandoned him, and Dexter will realize that Harrison, like him, has a dark passenger.
The first episode I half expected them to be able to fix everything. But I was wrong, as the episodes went on I only saw time wasted on unnecessary subplots. I liked Harrison's character at first, but then he became unbearable. Something that didn't make sense, because he was raised by an intelligent psychopath, anyone who remembers Hannah's character, knows what I mean.
While the ending and the last words we heard from Dexter were something I figured would happen, it was the execution that made me uneasy and makes it a worse ending than the previous one. Yes, it was inevitable that the character would have that ending, it was time, but they did it in such a mediocre way, I find it more offensive than the 2013 finale.
What did it cost the screenwriters to eliminate stupid subplots? There are even characters that are just there to divert attention and consume time. New characters that didn't add anything interesting, even a police station full of fools. On the other hand, how does a police force that has failed to solve hundreds of girl disappearances in years, overnight discover the Bay Killer so easily. A statement from a drug dealer and some photos with marks on his neck.
The ideal would have been a more intimate miniseries, with more time of Dexter and his son together, learning the code. It was the consistent way to do things, so that as Harrison mastered his dark passenger, he would perfect the code and realize that his father fits the profile for choosing victims. How nice it would have been to see Dexter wrapped in plastic, with the images of all his innocent victims, being executed by the new blood, by a new dark passenger coming from his own flesh. It was the ending I was hoping for and not the absurd scene the professional screenwriters wrote.
Now it's all over. I'm sure they are thinking of doing another series, with Dexter's legacy. But if they do, I'm not going to watch it. This story is closed forever. Thank you creators of the series, I know you have tried to make amends. You didn't succeed, but thank you for bringing back one of my favorite characters. I will keep all the good things the character gave us over the years, especially the end of season 4.
Dexter New Blood, el nuevo final ideado para nuestro querido asesino, nos muestra a un Dexter Morgan con otra identidad (Jim) en un pueblo aparentemente muy tranquilo, es el novio del Sheriff del pueblo y utiliza sus técnicas de llevarse bien con todos para pasar desapercibido. El fantasma de su hermana Debra le acompaña. El oscuro pasajero está oculto, pero la sed de sangre, acumulada durante tantos años y el encuentro con un joven personaje harán que su oscuro pasajero resurja. Todo coincidiendo con la repentina aparición de Harrinson, su hijo, que ahora es un adolescente, criado en Argentina por Hannah. Sólo busca respuestas, quiere saber por qué su padre le abandonó, y Dexter se dará cuenta de que Harrison, como él, tiene un oscuro pasajero.
El primer episodio medio esperaba que pudieran arreglar todo. Pero me equivoqué, a medida que pasaban los episodios sólo veía que se perdía el tiempo en subtramas innecesarias. El personaje de Harrison me gustaba al principio, pero luego se volvió insoportable. Algo que no tenía sentido, porque fue criado por un psicópata inteligente, cualquiera que recuerde al personaje de Hannah, sabe a lo que me refiero.
Aunque el final y las últimas palabras que escuchamos de Dexter eran algo que me imaginaba que iba a pasar, fue la ejecución lo que me causó malestar y lo convierte en un final peor que el anterior. Sí, era inevitable que el personaje tuviera ese final, era el momento, pero lo hicieron de una manera tan mediocre, que me parece más ofensivo que el final de 2013.
Qué les costó a los guionistas eliminar subtramas estúpidas? Incluso hay personajes que solo están ahí para desviar la atención y consumir tiempo. Nuevos personajes que no aportaban nada interesante, incluso una comisaría llena de tontos. Por otro lado, cómo una policía que ha fracasado en resolver cientos de desapariciones de chicas en años, de un día para otro descubre al Asesino de la Bahía tan fácilmente. Una declaración de un traficante de drogas y unas fotos con marcas en el cuello.
Lo ideal hubiera sido una miniserie más íntima, con más tiempo de Dexter y su hijo juntos, aprendiendo el código. Era la forma coherente de hacer las cosas, para que a medida que Harrison dominara a su oscuro pasajero, perfeccionara el código y se diera cuenta de que su padre encaja en el perfil para elegir víctimas. Qué bonito hubiera sido ver a Dexter envuelto en plástico, con las imágenes de todas sus víctimas inocentes, siendo ejecutado por la nueva sangre, por un nuevo pasajero oscuro procedente de su propia carne. Era el final que esperaba y no la absurda escena que escribieron los guionistas profesionales.
Ahora todo ha terminado. Seguro que están pensando en hacer otra serie, con el legado de Dexter. Pero si lo hacen, no voy a verla. Esta historia está cerrada para siempre. Gracias creadores de la serie, sé que han intentado enmendar la situación. No lo has conseguido, pero gracias por traer de vuelta a uno de mis personajes favoritos. Me quedaré con todo lo bueno que nos dio el personaje durante años, especialmente el final de la cuarta temporada.
RAY DONOVAN: THE MOVIE
Ray Donovan also premiered on Showtime. It was a series that came to fill the void left by Dexter. The first season aired the same year Dexter ended.
The story revolves around the life of Ray Donovan and his family, born in Boston and Irish. Another amoral character, he is in charge of solving the problems of powerful people, using whatever is merited to cover them up, even killing if necessary. Ray has a beautiful wife and two children, is doing very well because he earns a lot of money and has a team that helps him in all his jobs.
But the traumas of the past haunt all the Donovans. The suicide of his sister is an event that marked them all, but also the sexual abuse of a priest against Bunchy, the dumbest of the Donovans. Later we will discover that not only Bunchy was one of the victims. Terry is another Donovan, a boxing trainer and as the seasons go by he will suffer from a degenerative disease. The youngest of the Donovans is an African-American, the result of an affair of the other great protagonist and who was one of the reasons why he enjoyed the series so much: Mickey Donovan.
From the beginning of the series, Mickey Donovan is the monster who caused all the traumas in his children, who had to grow up in an environment ruled by the mafia, where crime and violence were the only way to survive. Mickey is a despicable character, but the interpretation of Angelina Jolie's fabulous father: Jon Voight, gives him a charisma and a funny personality.
The difficult relationship between father and son was the constant of the series. I remember that, in the pilot episode, Ray does not want Mickey, after his release from prison, to visit them, but Abby, Ray's wife opened the doors to the wolf, something that we are reminded in this film that, actually in a long episode, to close the series.
Admittedly, the series dragged on longer than it should have. The story should have ended in the fifth season, because Abby's death was an abrupt change in the story, even then they changed the city, moving everyone to New York. The series was losing fans, it wasn't the same anymore, but they wanted to keep exploiting one of their last successes. Showtime was falling into the void, with no productions that stood out like in the past.
I was still loyal to the series and that's why I found the cancellation decision very painful, when the seventh season ended, which had left the plots open. It seemed disrespectful to the fans, but I had no choice but to resign myself to not seeing a Ray Donovan finale.
But the creators managed to negotiate and agreed to make a movie to give it an ending. We only had to wait two years, due to the already known problems that affected the production of many projects. Ray Donovan The Movie gives us an emotional closure, also with only one viable direction, and also gives us a revelation of the past, which gives me to understand that the screenwriters knew how to end the story since a long time ago.
Season 7 already used a lot of flashbacks to learn about the Donovans' past and the reasons for his sister's suicide. It all comes back to Boston and the events that happened in their hometown. The film focuses entirely on resolving all the loose ends of the season seven finale and finally Ray must make a decision with Mickey. The conflict between father and son had to be settled.
A bittersweet ending, but one that makes sense and is consistent with what we saw in the first season. As a bonus, we are shown how Ray Donovan managed to become the problem solver and gain so much influence. Finally, the big reveal that there are hints of in other seasons. Mickey always claimed it was a trap set for him. We will get the answer and it will be surprising.
A synchronized final sequence, blending past and present, brings Ray Donovan's adventures to a poetic end. He must finally pay for everything he did, the feeling of guilt is already unbearable. Ray ended up becoming a monster like his father, only he had that choice, instead his father was a product of the environment he grew up in. Ray is tired and no longer wants to continue destroying his loved ones, he must think of his children, especially his daughter Bridget. She plays a decisive role and Ray must protect her, no matter the price he has to pay. A father's sacrifice for his daughter.
All the other characters have closure. The fate of each of the Donovans is sealed. A good ending to a series that had its ups and downs, but that I always enjoyed and has a special place in my memory.
Mickey Donovan's gestures and dances will remain in my seriefile mind as the funniest moments of the series. I liked that character more than the main character. Thanks to the creators for giving a worthy ending to the characters and the story in general.
Ray Donovan también se estrenó en Showtime. Fue una serie que vino a llenar el vacío dejado por Dexter. La primera temporada se emitió el mismo año que terminó Dexter.
La historia gira en torno a la vida de Ray Donovan y su familia, nacido en Boston y de irlandés. Otro personaje amoral, se encarga de resolver los problemas de la gente poderosa, utilizando lo que se amerite para encubrirlos, incluso matando si es necesario. Ray tiene una bella esposa y dos hijos, le va muy bien porque gana mucho dinero y tiene un equipo que le ayuda en todos sus trabajos.
Pero los traumas del pasado persiguen a todos los Donovan. El suicidio de su hermana es un hecho que los marcó a todos, pero también los abusos sexuales de un sacerdote contra Bunchy, el más tonto de los Donovan. Más tarde descubriremos que no sólo Bunchy fue una de las víctimas. Terry es otro Donovan, entrenador de boxeo y con el paso de las temporadas sufrirá una enfermedad degenerativa. El menor de los Donovan es un afroamericano, fruto de un romance del otro gran protagonista y que fue una de las razones por las que disfrutó tanto de la serie: Mickey Donovan.
Desde el principio de la serie, Mickey Donovan es el monstruo que provocó todos los traumas en sus hijos, que tuvieron que crecer en un entorno gobernado por la mafia, donde el crimen y la violencia eran la única forma de sobrevivir. Mickey es un personaje despreciable, pero la interpretación del fabuloso padre de Angelina Jolie: Jon Voight, le da un carisma y una personalidad divertida.
La difícil relación entre padre e hijo fue la constante de la serie. Recuerdo que, en el episodio piloto, Ray no quiere que Mickey, tras su salida de la cárcel, les visite, pero Abby, la mujer de Ray le abrió las puertas al lobo, algo que se nos recuerda en esta película que, en realidad en un largo episodio, para cerrar la serie.
Hay que reconocer que la serie se alargó más de lo debido. La historia debería haber terminado en la quinta temporada, porque la muerte de Abby supuso un cambio brusco en la historia, incluso entonces cambiaron la ciudad, trasladando a todos a Nueva York. La serie estaba perdiendo adeptos, ya no era lo mismo, pero querían seguir explotando uno de sus últimos éxitos. Showtime estaba cayendo en el vacío, sin producciones que destacaran como en el pasado.
Yo seguía siendo fiel a la serie y por eso me pareció muy dolorosa la decisión de cancelación, cuando terminó la séptima temporada, que había dejado las tramas abiertas. Me pareció una falta de respeto a los fans, pero no tuve más remedio que resignarme a no ver un final de Ray Donovan.
Pero los creadores consiguieron negociar y aceptaron hacer una película para darle un final. Sólo tuvimos que esperar dos años, debido a los problemas ya conocidos que afectaron a la producción de muchos proyectos. Ray Donovan The Movie nos da un cierre emocional, también con una sola dirección viable, y además nos ofrece una revelación del pasado, lo que me da a entender que los guionistas sabían cómo terminar la historia desde hace mucho tiempo.
La séptima temporada ya utilizó muchos flashbacks para conocer el pasado de los Donovan y las razones del suicidio de su hermana. Todo regresa a Boston y a los sucesos ocurridos en su ciudad natal. La película se centra por completo en resolver todos los cabos sueltos del final de la séptima temporada y finalmente Ray debe tomar una decisión con Mickey. El conflicto entre padre e hijo tenía que quedar zanjado.
Un final agridulce, pero que tiene sentido y es coherente con lo que vimos en la primera temporada. Como plus, se nos muestra cómo Ray Donovan logró convertirse en el solucionador de problemas y ganar tanta influencia. Por último, la gran revelación de la que hay indicios en otras temporadas. Mickey siempre afirmó que era una trampa que le habían tendido. Tendremos la respuesta y será sorprendente.
Una secuencia final sincronizada, que mezcla pasado y presente, pone fin a las aventuras de Ray Donovan de forma poética. Finalmente debe pagar por todo lo que hizo, el sentimiento de culpa es ya insoportable. Ray acabó convirtiéndose en un monstruo como su padre, sólo que él tuvo esa elección, en cambio su padre fue un producto del entorno en el que creció. Ray está cansado y ya no quiere seguir destruyendo a sus seres queridos, debe pensar en sus hijos, especialmente en su hija Bridget.. Ella juega un papel decisivo y Ray debe protegerla, sin importar el precio que tenga que pagar. El sacrificio de un padre por su hija.
Todos los demás personajes tienen un cierre. El destino de cada uno de los Donovan está sellado. Un buen final para una serie que tuvo sus altibajos, pero que siempre disfrute y tiene un lugar especial en mi memoria
Los gestos y bailes de Mickey Donovan quedarán en mi mente seriefila como los momentos más divertidos de la serie. Me gustaba más ese personaje que el protagonista. Gracias a los creadores por dar un final digno a los personajes y a la historia en general.
Dexter and Ray Donovan, each marked a special Showtime era. Maybe the ending of one is better than the other, but we can't deny that they are good series. I hope that many of their fans will only remember the good of both and try to minimize the bad.

Dexter y Ray Donovan, cada una marcó una época especial de Showtime. Quizás el final de una sea mejor que el de la otra, pero no podemos negar que son buenas series. Espero que muchos de sus fans sólo recuerden lo bueno de ambas y traten de minimizar lo malo.
