A few days ago, before Christmas, I had the opportunity to see Benedetta. I had no intention of reviewing it, as the film deals with a subject that may be sensitive for many viewers. Sex and religion is a mixture that can cause an explosion of major proportions. Filmmaker Paul Verhoeven, a master filmmaker who knows how to provoke and transgress. He has done so in many of his previous films, including those made in the United States, all of them provocative and controversial. If you are sensitive to sensitive subjects, do not see the film.

The last thing I had seen of the filmmaker was the movie Elle, starring the masterful Isabelle Huppert in 2016 and that raised some dust when it was released, due to the subject it dealt with (Rape and Revenge), based on a novel by Philippe Djian. For such a reason, when I saw that Verhoeven would be presenting his new film at the Cannes Film Festival, it became another one I was looking forward to seeing.
I had only seen the trailer, I didn't want to read anything or know the impressions of the professional critics who were able to see it at Cannes. All I knew was that it was a story set in a convent in the Middle Ages with sex scenes.
I stayed away from any other information, so much so, that it was only after I finished watching it, when I discovered that it is based on real facts, the nun Benedetta existed in real life and the film is an adaptation of a book by historian Judith C. Brown about the life of that woman.
The book is titled Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy (Studies in the History of Sexuality) and you can get it on Amazon, in case you are interested in knowing more about this fact, after enjoying the movie.
Movies with nuns from the Middle Ages and transgressive stories is not something new, during the seventies was very popular the subgenre called nunsploitation and where there are some cult films, many were banned by the censorship offices of some countries. Now, in the middle of 2021 Verhoeven presents us with a film that is very reminiscent of that subgenre. This should not be shocking, but since we are in a time when people are very sensitive, there are bound to be people who express harsh criticism against the film.
For those of you who are younger and don't know who the Dutchman Paul Verhoeven is, I assure you that you have seen some of his films. Does Robocop ring a bell? Yes, the original 1987 film directed by this filmmaker, a classic that was criticized by a sector for its violence and message. Total Recall, that marvel that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and of which they made a remake that I don't even remember who the hell did it. Another of his famous American films was Basic Instint, a commercial success that also provoked complaints from a sector of the public.
Verhoeven is a filmmaker who knows how to create controversy with the stories he tells, he is a born provocateur. I respect him as an author and he is another of my favorite filmmakers, because he has his personal stamp, which he did not renounce even in his period outside Europe. Although I recognize that for me, his worst film was The Man Without a Shadow, it seems he made it for contract reasons.
I appreciate that he makes his films in Europe, a place where he can give free rein to his style with greater creative freedom. A film like Benedetta could only be made in Europe and with European actresses.

Lo último que había visto del cineasta fue la película Elle, protagonizada por la magistral Isabelle Huppert en 2016 y que levantó cierta polvareda cuando se estrenó, debido al tema que abordaba (Violación y venganza), basado en una novela de Philippe Djian. Por tal motivo, cuando vi que Verhoeven presentaría su nueva película en el Festival de Cannes, se convirtió en otra de las que tenía ganas de ver.
Sólo había visto el tráiler, no quería leer nada ni conocer las impresiones de los críticos profesionales que pudieron verla en Cannes. Lo único que sabía era que era una historia ambientada en un convento de la Edad Media con escenas de sexo.
Me mantuve al margen de cualquier otra información, tanto, que fue al terminar de verla, cuando descubrí que está basada en hechos reales, la monja Benedetta existió en la vida real y la película es una adaptación de un libro que la historiadora Judith C. Brown sobre la vida de esa mujer.
El libro se titula Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy (Studies in the History of Sexuality) y puedes conseguirlo en Amazon, por si te interesa saber más sobre este hecho, después de disfrutar de la película.
Las películas con monjas de la Edad Media e historias transgresoras no es algo nuevo, durante los años setenta fue muy popular el subgénero llamado nunsploitation y donde hay algunas películas de culto, muchas fueron prohibidas por las oficinas de censora de algunos países. Ahora, en pleno 2021 Verhoeven nos presenta una película que tiene recuerda mucho a ese subgénero. Esto no debería escandalizar, pero como estamos en una época en la que la gente es muy sensible, seguramente habrá personas que exprese duras críticas contra la película.
Para los que son más jóvenes y no saben quién es el holandés Paul Verhoeven, les aseguro que han visto alguna de sus películas. ¿Les suena Robocop? Sí, la original de 1987, dirigida por este cineasta, un clásico que fue criticado por un sector por su violencia y su mensaje. Total Recall, esa maravilla que protagonizó Arnold Schwarzenegger y de la que hicieron un remake que ni siquiera recuerdo quién demonios hizo. Otra de sus famosas películas americanas fue Basic Instint, un éxito comercial que también provocó las quejas de un sector del público.
Verhoeven es un cineasta que sabe crear polémica con las historias que cuenta, es un provocador nato. Le respeto como autor y es otro de mis cineastas favoritos, porque tiene su sello personal, al que no renunció ni siquiera en su etapa fuera de Europa. Aunque reconozco que para mí, su peor película fue El hombre sin sombra, parece que la hizo por motivos de contrato.
Agradezco que haga sus películas en Europa, un lugar donde puede dar rienda suelta a su estilo con mayor libertad creativa. Una película como Benedetta sólo podía hacerse en Europa y con actrices europeas.
What is the plot of Benedetta?
Benedetta Carlini is a very devout child and her parents transfer her to the Abbey of Pescia, where she will spend the rest of her life, growing up and being educated as a nun. Since she was a little girl she has felt special, her faith is so great that she attributes everything to the designs of God. In the convent, she will be taken away a figure of the Virgin Mary that her mother gave her and she will submit to the strict regime under the care of the abbess Sister Felicita. Already transformed into Sister Benedetta, she will have visions (or dreams) of Jesus, but her faith and feelings will be put to the test when a young peasant girl named Bartolomea, who wants to escape from her pathetic life with her father, is welcomed into the Abbey. She and Benedetta will feel an undeniable physical attraction, which will transgress the morally acceptable. At the same time, Sister Benedetta will suffer in her own flesh the supposed signs of God that will draw the attention of the other nuns and the whole population of Pescia, which is in fear because of the spread of the black plague throughout Europe. Are Benedetta's visions real? Are they dreams? Or are they hallucinations of her own madness? Are they real miracles or is it all a hoax? What does she want? Does she really love Bartolomea?

Opinion
Not perfect
The film is not perfect and has flaws in the construction of the main character. I have not read the book on which it is based, but surely there it does delve into Sister Benedetta's motivations and her formative years. Something that in the film is not detailed, we only see Bendetta as a child, with an attitude of being extremely religious and giving a divine explanation to everything that happens, something that is palpable in the first sequence of the film, when she and her parents encounter a group of men who want to steal their belongings.
Any small accident, such as a statue of the Virgin falling to the ground, is seen as a divine sign. Recall that it is set in the Middle Ages, so anything, could be considered a sign from God.
I would have liked to see Benedetta's formation in the convent, because the rapid transition from her time as a child to adulthood deprives us of a better understanding of how her faith transforms into lust for power.
Ambition and power
For me, Benedetta's story, apart from the supposed love between her and Bartolomea, is really about human ambition and all that one is capable of doing to obtain absolute power.
At the beginning of the film it is emphasized that Benedetta is a smart girl, that's why it was necessary to show more about her formative stage inside the convent, unfortunately we don't see that, the director introduces us to the adult stage very quickly. Maybe he did it that way, so that everyone could make his own analysis.
Benedetta perhaps believes that her visions are real and that she receives direct messages from the son of God, but she is also intelligent and knows that she can easily manipulate people, using the religious element.
At what point does she take this path, when does she realize this power, is it all planned? These are questions that do not have a clear answer, as they are transformations of the character that occur off-screen. The friendship with Bartolomea seems to be the fuse that ignites the flame. For it is from the appearance of that character and what she makes Benedetta feel that drives her to execute a plan that elevates her to the pinnacle of power within the Abbey.
Do they love each other? Bartolomea seems to be in love with Benedetta, but this other one, it is not very clear if she only seeks to satisfy her need for pleasure and at the same time, use Bartolomea to achieve other goals. Moreover, paradoxically, Sister Benedetta is a faithful believer, her priority is God and her beliefs, although she is a very selfish person, who thinks and executes certain acts that only benefit her. She is so devoted to her beliefs, that although many of her acts are vile manipulations, she seems so sure, that she believes her own lies.
Benedetta has the attitudes of a psychopath. I am not an expert on the subject, but there are signs of psychopathy in her behavior and in the natural way she manipulates and deceives everyone around her. Something that will even help save her from imminent death.
It should be remembered again that the plot is set in the Middle Ages, with the plague of the Black Death ravaging a part of Europe. The ignorance of the population is combined with fear and it was an extremely religious world where the Church had great power. All this is exploited by Benedetta for her ambitions, which she believes are legitimate because they are God's orders.
Opinión
No es Perfecta
La película no es perfecta y tiene fallos en la construcción del personaje principal. No he leído el libro en el que se basa, pero seguramente allí sí se profundiza en las motivaciones de Sor Benedetta y en sus años de formación. Algo que en la película no se detalla, sólo vemos a Bendetta de niña, con una actitud de ser extremadamente religiosa y dar una explicación divina a todo lo que sucede, algo que es palpable en la primera secuencia de la película, cuando ella y sus padres se encuentran con un grupo de hombres que quieren robar sus pertenencias.
Cualquier pequeño accidente, como la caída de una estatua de la Virgen al suelo, es visto como una señal divina. Recordemos que está ambientada en la Edad Media, por lo que cualquier cosa, podría ser considerada una señal de Dios.
Me hubiera gustado ver la formación de Benedetta en el convento, porque la rápida transición de su época de niña a la edad adulta nos priva de comprender mejor cómo su fe se transforma en ansias de poder.
Ambición y poder
Para mí, la historia de Benedetta, aparte del supuesto amor entre ella y Bartolomea, trata realmente de la ambición humana y de todo lo que uno es capaz de hacer para obtener el poder absoluto.
Al principio de la película se destaca que Benedetta es una chica inteligente, por eso era necesario mostrar más sobre su etapa formativa dentro del convento, lamentablemente no vemos eso, el director nos introduce en la etapa adulta muy rápidamente. Tal vez lo hizo así, para que cada uno hiciera su propio análisis.
Benedetta quizás cree que sus visiones son reales y que recibe mensajes directos del hijo de Dios, pero también es inteligente y sabe que puede manipular fácilmente a la gente, utilizando el elemento religioso.
¿En qué momento toma este camino, cuándo se da cuenta de este poder, está todo planeado? Son preguntas que no tienen una respuesta clara, ya que son transformaciones del personaje que ocurren fuera de la pantalla. La amistad con Bartolomea parece ser la mecha que enciende la llama. Porque es a partir de la aparición de ese personaje y de lo que hace sentir a Benedetta, lo que la impulsa a ejecutar un plan que la eleva a la cima del poder dentro de la Abadía.
¿Se aman? Bartolomea parece estar enamorada de Benedetta, pero esta otra, no está muy claro si sólo busca satisfacer su necesidad de placer y al mismo tiempo, utilizar a Bartolomea para conseguir otros objetivos. Además, paradójicamente, Sor Benedetta es una fiel creyente, su prioridad es Dios y sus creencias, aunque es una persona muy egoísta, que piensa y ejecuta ciertos actos que sólo la benefician a ella. Es tan devota a sus creencias, que aunque muchos de sus actos son viles manipulaciones, parece tan segura, que se cree sus propias mentiras.
Benedetta tiene actitudes de psicópata. No soy un experto en el tema, pero hay signos de psicopatía en su comportamiento y en la forma natural en que manipula y engaña a todos los que la rodean. Algo que le ayudará incluso a salvarse de una muerte inminente.
Hay que recordar de nuevo que la trama se sitúa en la Edad Media, con la plaga de la peste negra asolando una parte de Europa. La ignorancia de la población se combina con el miedo y era un mundo extremadamente religioso donde la Iglesia tenía un gran poder. Todo esto es aprovechado por Benedetta para sus ambiciones, que cree legítimas porque son órdenes de Dios.
Transgression.
The film has sex scenes between the main characters and full nudity in several scenes. For me this is something normal, knowing the theme of the film, but for some viewers with certain deep religious beliefs, they may find profane scenes and be shocked.
This is something that the filmmaker, an expert in making films that divide opinions and provoke debates, is looking for. Especially a scene between the two protagonists, which will surely provoke the most outrage among the most conservative viewers.
Although the love relationship between the two women is a fundamental part of the story, I downplayed the importance of these controversial scenes, as they did not generate any kind of reaction in me. I found more important the whole story of manipulation and power play, which is the juiciest part of the film.
As I have said on other occasions, I am surprised that almost entering the year 2022, the subject of sex is still considered, by many people, a taboo. A movie can be violent, characters can go out killing, committing atrocities against others, etc., but what will provoke outrage from a sector of the public, will be the simple sex scenes and the total nudity of two women. It seems that many people still have a middle-aged mentality.
Fanaticism
The film also shows us a religious system that had great power in the known world up to that time. But it was a corrupt system with unsavory characters. Beings that shielded themselves under the religious cloak to commit horrible acts against a fanatic population absorbed in their beliefs.
This is valid to make an analogy with any structure and organization where people must only obey without the right to discern. Although we are not in the dark middle ages, a historical period where we suffered the greatest of backwardness at all levels, because of the power that religion had at that time. Today, it is other types of organisms that control us and decide our destiny.
Any kind of fanaticism is dangerous and we have not overcome it, that is why our societies continue to make the same mistakes of the past. In these times where we suffer a pandemic and fear is present, it is easy to fall into the clutches of any extreme and where characters like those shown in the film, who use religion to climb positions of power, take advantage of many fragile people.
A modeling agency
There is something that really tickled me, but it's not the first time it's been seen either. In the style of the nunsxploitations I mentioned at the beginning of the post, most of the nuns that appear in the movie look like they came out of a modeling agency, hahaha
A selection of pretty actresses. This takes away a lot of realism from what we see, it happens to me, I can't believe that in the middle ages all those nuns look like models with perfect teeth. But well, this is not a documentary, it is a fiction film based on real facts and it is necessary to make it enjoyable for the viewer.
Transgresión.
La película tiene escenas de sexo entre los protagonistas y desnudos integrales en varias escenas. Para mí esto es algo normal, conociendo el tema de la película, pero para algunos espectadores con ciertas creencias religiosas profundas, pueden encontrar escenas profanas y escandalizarse.
Esto es algo que busca el cineasta, experto en hacer películas que dividan opiniones y provoquen debates. Especialmente una escena entre las dos protagonistas, que seguramente provocará el mayor escándalo entre los espectadores más conservadores.
Aunque la relación amorosa entre las dos mujeres es una parte fundamental de la historia, resté importancia a esas escenas polémicas, ya que no me generaron ningún tipo de reacción. Me pareció más importante toda la historia de manipulación y juego de poder, que es la parte más jugosa de la película.
Como he dicho en otras ocasiones, me sorprende que casi entrando en el año 2022, el tema del sexo siga siendo considerado, por mucha gente, un tabú. Una película puede ser violenta, los personajes pueden salir matando, cometiendo atrocidades contra otros, etc., pero lo que provocará la indignación de un sector del público, serán las simples escenas de sexo y el desnudo total de dos mujeres. Parece que mucha gente sigue teniendo una mentalidad de edad media.
Fanatismo
La película también nos muestra un sistema religioso que tenía un gran poder en el mundo conocido hasta ese momento. Pero era un sistema corrupto con personajes desagradables. Seres que se escudaban bajo el manto religioso para cometer actos horribles contra una población fanática y absorta en sus creencias.
Esto es válido para hacer una analogía con cualquier estructura y organización donde la gente sólo debe obedecer sin derecho a discernir. Aunque no estamos en la oscura edad media, periodo histórico donde sufrimos el mayor de los atrasos a todos los niveles, por el poder que tenía la religión en aquella época. Hoy en día, son otro tipo de organismos los que nos controlan y deciden nuestro destino.
Cualquier tipo de fanatismo es peligroso y no lo hemos superado, por eso nuestras sociedades siguen cometiendo los mismos errores del pasado. En estos tiempos donde sufrimos una pandemia y el miedo está presente, es fácil caer en las garras de cualquier extremo y donde personajes como los que se muestran en la película, que utilizan la religión para escalar posiciones de poder, se aprovechan de muchas personas frágiles.
Una agencia de modelos
Hay algo que me ha hecho mucha gracia, pero tampoco es la primera vez que se ve. Al estilo de las nunsxplotacions que mencioné al principio del post, la mayoría de las monjas que aparecen en la película parecen salidas de una agencia de modelos. Jajaja
Una selección de actrices guapas. Esto le quita mucho realismo a lo que vemos, a mi me pasa, no puedo creer que en la edad media todas esas monjas parezcan modelos con una dentadura perfecta. Pero bueno, esto no es un documental, es una película de ficción basada en unos hechos reales y hay que hacerla amena para el espectador.
Cast
All the actors and actresses are good in their performances, but I will only focus on the three actresses that stand out above the rest.
Virginie Efira plays Sister Benedetta, the protagonist of the story and she comes off very well with the responsibility of being the main face of the film. The actress had worked with the director in his previous film, Elle. But in Benedetta she exploits all her talent and only a European actress is able to take on the challenge of this character, as I don't think any current Hollywod actress could accept to do the scenes that would provoke a scandal in some viewers. I will be very attentive to all the new projects of the actress who has left me enchanted.
Daphné Patakia plays Bartolomea, the young peasant girl who wants to escape the yoke of her father and desperately seeks refuge in the Abbey. It is thanks to Benedetta that she is accepted, after a financial agreement. The chemistry between the two actresses on screen is fabulous. The romance between the characters is believable. I did not know this Belgian actress and her filmography is short. Another new name to watch out for in her upcoming films.
Charlotte Rampling plays Abbess Sister Felicita, what can I say about Rampling? I've already said it all about her in other reviews of films or series she's been in. My admiration for Charlotte Rampling is very big and it started since I was a child and I saw the movie Night Porter. She was an actress I was in love with for a long time, the most beautiful eyes in cinema, she is old enough to be my grandmother, but I still see her as beautiful as in past decades. With her presence in the film, it's already worth seeing.
Other cast members include Lambet Wilson, who plays Alfonso, a church member (I don't remember the position) who will play an important role in the last third of the story. Actress Louise Chevillotte plays another of the nuns, Midea, who is suspicious of Benedetta. Another beautiful actress, whose previous films I have not seen, with a short but very important character for one of the plot's conflicts.
Reparto
Todos los actores y actrices son buenos en sus interpretaciones, pero sólo me enfocare en las tres actrices que destacan por encima del resto.
Virginie Efira interpreta a Sor Benedetta, la protagonista de la historia y sale muy bien parada con la responsabilidad de ser la cara principal de la película. La actriz había trabajado con el director en su anterior película, Elle. Pero en Benedetta explota todo su talento y sólo una actriz europea es capaz de asumir el reto de este personaje, ya que no creo que ninguna actriz actual de Hollywod pudiera aceptar hacer las escenas que provocarían un escándalo en algunos espectadores. Estaré muy atento a todos los nuevos proyectos de la actriz que me ha dejado encantado.
Daphné Patakia interpreta a Bartolomea, la joven campesina que quiere escapar del yugo de su padre y busca desesperadamente refugio en la Abadía. Es gracias a Benedetta que es aceptada, tras un acuerdo económico. La química entre las dos actrices en la pantalla es fabulosa. El romance entre los personajes es creíble. No conocía a esta actriz belga y su filmografía es corta. Otro nombre nuevo al que hay que prestar atención para sus próximas películas.
Charlotte Rampling interpreta a la abadesa Sor Felicita. ¿Qué puedo decir de Rampling? Ya lo he dicho todo sobre ella en otras críticas de películas o series en las que ha participado. Mi admiración por Charlotte Rampling es muy grande y empezó desde que era un niño y vi la película Portero de Noche Fue una actriz de la que estuve enamorado durante mucho tiempo, los ojos más bonitos del cine, tiene edad para ser mi abuela, pero la sigo viendo tan guapa como en décadas pasadas. Con su presencia en la película, ya merece la pena ver.
Otros miembros del reparto son Lambet Wilson, que interpreta a Alfonso, un miembro de la iglesia (no recuerdo el cargo) que tendrá un papel importante en el último tercio de la historia. La actriz Louise Chevillotte interpreta a otra de las monjas, Midea, que sospecha de Benedetta. Otra bella actriz, cuyas películas anteriores no he visto, con un personaje corto pero muy importante para uno de los conflictos de la trama.
Benedetta I recommend if you are an open minded viewer and will not be affected by scenes that may be labeled profane, depending on your culture and beliefs. This I warn you so you don't have a bad experience watching the movie. I loved it, it is a film that suits my tastes, plus I have seen almost all of the director's filmography and I know what he is going to offer me.

Benedetta la recomiendo si eres un espectador de mente abierta y no te afectarán las escenas que pueden ser tachadas de profanas, dependiendo de tu cultura y creencias. Esto lo advierto para que no tengas una mala experiencia viendo la película. A mí me encantó, es una película que se ajusta a mis gustos, además he visto casi toda la filmografía del director y sé lo que me va a ofrecer.
