De vuelta con la antología multiversal presentada en "What If...?", donde cada episodio representa un universo alterno al de las películas pertenecientes al Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel (UCM), hablaré en esta oportunidad acerca del sexto episodio, en el que Erik Stevens, también conocido como Killmonger, rescata a Tony Stark de ser secuestrado por la comunidad de los 10 anillos en Afganistán (tal como ocurriría en la primera película de Iron Man y donde el personaje se convertiría en dicho superhéroe).
Back with the multiversal anthology presented in "What If...? ", where each episode represents an alternate universe to that of the movies belonging to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I will talk in this opportunity about the sixth episode, in which Erik Stevens, also known as Killmonger, rescues Tony Stark from being kidnapped by the 10 rings in Afghanistan (just as it would happen in the first Iron Man movie and where the character would become said superhero).
Un Tony Stark sin arco de redención
La premisa del dúo de Killmonger y Tony Stark podía considerarse extraña desde que el episodio fue anunciado, pues ninguno de estos personajes tenía relación con el otro en las películas del UCM, más allá de estar relacionados con la guerra en Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, el episodio captó mi atención al entender por dónde podía ir la idea, pues no necesariamente tenía que centrarse en la amistad de ambos personajes, sino en el hecho de que este Tony Stark no haya sido secuestrado.
La primera parte del episodio nos muestra como Killmonger impulsa a Tony Stark a crear tecnología mucho más avanzada, similar a la que conseguiría en la cueva tras su secuestro para acabar construyendo a Iron Man. En este universo, Iron man en sí no llega a existir, pero la idea de un Tony Stark capaz de crear tecnología de ese nivel, sin haber pasado por su arco de redención que lo llevaría a entender su papel en la guerra y el uso que su tecnología recibe, me pareció una idea muy interesante para plantear.
Si vemos bien al personaje de Tony y su desarrollo en el UCM, tenemos a un hombre que primero se dedica a la industria armamentística, hasta que comprende el daño que hace al mundo al reforzar tanto la tecnología de las armas utilizadas en la guerra y opta por dedicarse a crear tecnología para sí mismo. Tras ese cambio, la creación del Reactor Arc miniaturizado que impulsa su armadura y su asociación con S.H.I.E.L.D. y los Vengadores, Tony comienza a crear tecnología muy superior a todo lo antes visto, pasando por armaduras cada vez más complejas hasta acabar construyendo nanotecnología y finalmente la máquina del tiempo.
Tomando esto en cuenta, me pareció interesante el planteamiento ¿Qué pasaría si ese hombre fuera capaz de crear toda esa tecnología, pero dedicándose aún a la industria armamentística? Usar a Killmonger como puente para que Tony alcance ese nivel de tecnología mediante el vibranio era una forma coherente de hacerlo, además de que conociendo al personaje de Killmonger, uno podía suponer que esa asociación también se relacionaría con Wakanda ¿Por qué no hacer una historia donde Tony Stark sea capaz de destruír el mundo al llevar su tecnología a la guerra? ¿No sería interesante que el centro de este episodio fuera el poder que tuvo un hombre dedicado a la creación de armas para el ejército?
A Tony Stark with no redemption arc.
The premise of the duo of Killmonger and Tony Stark could have been considered weird since the episode was announced, as neither of these characters had a connection with each other in the MCU movies, beyond being related to the war in America. However, the episode caught my attention as I understood where the idea could go, as it didn't necessarily have to focus on the friendship of both characters, but on the fact that this Tony Stark hasn't been kidnapped.
The first part of the episode shows us how Killmonger drives Tony Stark to create much more advanced technology, similar to what he would get in the cave after his kidnapping to end up building Iron Man. In this universe, Iron man himself doesn't come into existence, but the idea of a Tony Stark capable of creating technology of that level, without having gone through his redemption arc that would lead him to understand his role in the war and the use his technology receives, I thought was a very interesting idea to bring up.
If we take a good look at the character of Tony and his development in the MCU, we have a man who first goes into the weapons industry, until he realizes the damage he does to the world by beefing up so much of the weapons technology used in warfare and opts to go into creating technology for himself. After that change, the creation of the miniaturized Arc Reactor that powers his armor and his association with S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers, Tony begins to create technology far superior to anything seen before, going through increasingly complex armor until he ends up building nanotechnology and finally the time machine.
Taking this on the table, I found the idea interesting. What would happen if this man was able to create all that technology, but still dedicated to the arms industry? Using Killmonger as a bridge for Tony to reach that level of technology through vibranium was a coherent way to do it, plus knowing the character of Killmonger, one could assume that this association would also relate to Wakanda, why not make a story where Tony Stark is able to destroy the world by taking his technology to war? Wouldn't it be interesting that the center of this episode was the power that a man dedicated to the creation of weapons for the military had?
La oportunidad perdida para centrarse en Killmonger
Aunque la anterior parecía ser la vía que tomaría el episodio, lentamente éste fue cambiando el foco de atención de Tony a Killmonger y su deseo de venganza contra Wakanda. La idea del Tony que toma un mal camino es desechada súbitamente cuando nos damos cuenta de que sólo es una pieza más que utilizará Erik para cumplir sus objetivos, centrándose al final la historia más en Black Panther que en Iron Man.
En este punto, personalmente es cuando comienzo a perder el interés en el episodio, pues la historia de Erik no me parece lo suficientemente bien desarrollada como para conectar con su personaje o con sus acciones, además de no ser realmente muy innovadora. La historia se acaba volviendo predecible mientras vemos simplemente como el protagonista va logrando todo lo que quiere, sin haber ninguna fuerza en oposición que parezca tener algún az bajo la manga en su contra.
Al final, a pesar de que el título y la introducción dan a entender que el episodio se centrará en un Tony Stark que no es secuestrado, realmente se acaba centrando en un Erik Stevens que logra sus planes con Wakanda.
The missed opportunity for focusing on Killmonger.
While the above seemed to be the path the episode would take, slowly the episode shifted focus from Tony to Killmonger and his desire for revenge against Wakanda. The idea of Tony taking a bad path is suddenly discarded when we realize that he's just another piece that Erik will use to accomplish his goals, bringing the story closer to Black Panther in the end than Iron Man.
At this point, personally is when I start to lose interest in the episode, as Erik's story doesn't seem to me to be developed well enough to connect with his character or his actions, as well as not really being very innovative. The story ends up becoming predictable as we simply watch the protagonist go about achieving everything he wants, with no force in opposition that seems to have any az up its >sleeve against him.
In the end, despite the title and intro implying that the episode will focus on a Tony Stark who doesn't get kidnapped, it really ends up focusing on an Erik Stevens who succeeds in his plans with Wakanda.
Una historia de poco interés
El problema con "What If... Killmonger rescued Tony Stark?" no es nada más la falsa expectativa que genera al inicio, también ocurre que su historia genera poco interés a medida que avanza y te das cuenta de que cada vez hay menos obstáculos que se le opongan a Erik.
Para que una historia atrape al espectador, ésta debe tener una historia donde haya un objetivo y una fuerza que se opone al objetivo. En este episodio no hay fuerzas que realmente se opongan a Erik, o al menos no con la fuerza para enfrentarlo.
Adicional a eso tenemos situaciones poco creíbles, haciendo un pequeño spoiler en este párrafo, tenemos como ejemplo la reacción de Tony Stark a la muerte de Rhodes, donde su decisión de enfrentar directamente a Erik me pareció lo más absurdo e irreal que pudieron hacer ¿No habría sido más propio de Tony colocarse como siempre un paso adelante de su enemigo, enviando la evidencia a las autoridades, haciéndola pública o enviándola a Pepper por lo menos?
A story of little interest
The problem with "What If... Killmonger rescued Tony Stark?" is not only the false expectation it generates at the beginning, it also happens that its story generates low interest as it progresses and you realize that there are less and less obstacles that oppose Erik.
For a story to grab the viewer, it must have a story where there is a goal and a force opposing the goal. In this episode there are no forces that really oppose Erik, or at least not with the strength to confront him.
Additional to that we have little credible situations, making a small spoiler in this paragraph, we have as an example the reaction of Tony Stark to the death of Rhodes, where his decision to confront Erik directly seemed to me the most absurd and unreal thing they could do, wouldn't it have been more proper of Tony to place himself as always one step ahead of his enemy, sending the evidence to the authorities, making it public or sending it to Pepper at least?
Conclusión
Este sexto episodio jugó con una idea que pudo dar vida a una historia excelente, profunda y original, pero tristemente se desvió en una dirección menos interesante probablemente sólo para dar vida a esta versión de Killmonger y poder utilizarla así en el episodio final de la serie.

This sixth episode played with an idea that could have brought to life an excellent, deep and original story, but sadly it veered off in a less interesting direction probably just to bring this version of Killmonger to life and thus be able to use it in the final episode of the series.
