The Whole Truth of 2016 is a film that was released under the name of Toda la verdad in Spain, and El Abogado del Mal for Latin America and has certain particularities that call attention.
One of them is that it is entirely set in a courtroom and resorts quite frequently to flashbacks that gradually evoke the words of the testimonies that gradually reconstruct the crime and the environment in which it took place.
For this reason it requires special attention. It is not one of those films in which we can leave the TV or any other device tuned in, go to the kitchen to prepare a coffee and then return after a few moments as we can do in other cases.
In The Whole Truth we run the risk of totally losing the "thread" of the plot and restarting from scratch.
The film has a certain magnetism and radically distances Keanu Reeves from those action products to which he has been accustomed for several years.
The way the film has been shot makes it quite difficult until near the end to know what has really happened with Reeves returning in a "devil's advocate" role.
Mike Lassiter is a 17 year old young man, suspected of murdering his father the rich lawyer Boone Lassiter and the person in charge of his defense in Richard Ramsay (a very measured interpretation of Keanu Reeves) who in addition to his legal profession is a very good friend of the Lassiter family since he has worked in the past for several years with the victim.
From the very beginning of the trial there is a strong hostility from the defendant towards the lawyer, who shows it by keeping quiet, which further complicates his task and makes him ask for outside help to try to unblock the situation.
Ramsay then seeks the help of a young lawyer and colleague, Janelle Brady (played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw) who will act in the trial as his assistant, and who from the outset will do her utmost to try to unravel the mystery behind the young man's attitude and what has really happened.
The witnesses are of particular importance in the trial and so they begin to parade one after another with frequent flashbacks that take us back to the scene of the crime.
The first witness is a flight attendant who claims that father and son had a heated argument during the flight to Stanford University, where the father had practically forced his son to enter this prestigious academic institution, from which he himself had graduated, still keeping friends and influences within the academic structure.
Then it is the turn of the police officer - perhaps the most influential of all - who had responded to the first call and who, upon arriving at the scene of the murder, he hears the young man muttering, admitting that he had done it, and his fingerprints are found on the knife used for the murder, which constitutes strong evidence in favor of the accusation.
The young man's reluctance to talk complicates matters further without allowing Richard to get a complete picture of the situation.
The suspense continues to build thanks to well-crafted camera shots and somber photography that create an atmosphere of unease and anxiety about the resolution of the case.
In fact, as the film progresses, the figure of the defendant's mother Loretta Lassite played by Renée Zellweger (unrecognizable physically in her role as a weak mother overwhelmed by the facts) begins to have all its relevance, especially in the relationship between father and son in the midst of a complex family relationship.
Everything would seem to lead to an inevitable end and sentence, since the evidence against the young accused, who has locked himself in an obstinate mutism, seems to be overwhelming.
However, and despite the fact that the final verdict seems to be a foregone conclusion even before the trial begins, lawyer Ramsay is determined to prove his client's innocence in court. And the coup de scène comes in the second part of the film.
Especially when the plot hints that the father had physically and emotionally abused not only his wife Loretta but also his own son.

The Whole Truth del año 2016 es una película que fue estrenada con el nombre de Toda la verdad en España, y El abogado del mal para América Latina y tiene ciertas particularidades que llaman la atención.
Una de ellas es que está totalmente ambientada en el aula de un tribunal y recurre con bastante frecuencia a los flaskbacks que van evocando de a poco las palabras de los testimonios que van reconstruyendo gradualmente el delito y el entorno en el que ha tenido lugar.
Por este motivo requiere una especial atención. No es de esas películas en las cuáles podemos dejar la TV u otro dispositivo sintonizado ir a la cococina a prepararnos un café y luego d epocos instantes volver como podemos hacer en otros casos.
En The Whole Truth corremos el riesgo de perder totalmente el "hilo" del argumento y volver a recomenzar desde cero.
La película tiene un cierto magnetismo y aleja radicalmente a Keanu Reeves de esos productos de acción a los que durante varios años nos ha tenido acostumbrado.
El modo en que ha sido filmada la película hace que sea bastante difícil hasta cerca del final saber lo que realmente ha sucedido con un Reeves que vuelve en un rol de "abogado del diablo".
Mike Lassiter es un joven de 17 años, sospechoso de asesinar a su padre el rico abogado Boone Lassiter y el encargado de su defensa en Richard Ramsay (una muy medida interpretación de Keanu Reeves) quien además de su profesión legal es un muy buen amigo de la familia Lassiter ya que ha trabajado en el pasado durante varios años con la víctima.
Desde el mismo inicio del juicio es presente una fuerte hostilidad del acusado hacia el abogado, que la manifiesta manteniéndose callado, lo que complica aún más su tarea y hace que debe solicitar ayuda externa para tratar de desbloquear la situación.
Ramsay solicita entonces la ayuda de una joven abogada y colega , Janelle Brady (interpretada por Gugu Mbatha-Raw ) quien actuará en el juicio como su asistente, y quien desde un primer momento se empeña con todas sus fuerzas y voluntad para tratar de desentrañar el misterio que se esconde detrás de la actitud del joven y de lo que realmente ha sucedido.
Los testigos son de particular importancia en el juicio y así comienzan a desfilar uno detrás de otro con frecuentes flashbacks que nos retrotraen a la escena del delito.
El primer testigo en un auxiliar de vuelo quien sostiene que padre e hijo mantuvieron una acalorada discusión durante el vuelo hasta la Universidad de Stanford donde el padre habría pr0cticamente onligado al hijo a ingresar en ese centro de estudios, de reconocido prestigio y del cuál él mismo había egresado, conservando aún dentro de esa estructura académica amigos e influencias.
Luego toca el turno al oficial de policía -tal vez el más influyente de todos- que había respondido a la primera llamada y que al llegar al lugar del homicidio siente murmurar al joven admitiendo que lo ha hecho y en el cuchillo usado para el asesinato son encontradas sus huellas dactilares, lo que constituye una pesada prueba a favor de la acusación.
La reticencia del joven a hablar complica sobremanera las cosas sin permitirle a Richard hacerse una idea completa sobre el cuadro de la situación.
El suspenso continúa a aumentar gracias a tomas muy bien logradas con la cámara y a una fotografía algo sombría que va creando un clima de inquietud y angustia respecto a la resolución del caso.
En realidad a medida que la película avanza la figura de la madre del acusado Loretta Lassite interpretada por Renée Zellweger (irreconocible físicamente en su rol de madre débil y abrumada por los hechos) comienza a tener toda su relevancia, especialmente en la relación entre padre e hijo en medio de una compleja relación familiar.
Todo parecería llevar a un final y a una sentencia inevitable, ya que las pruebas contra el joven acusado, que se ha encerrado en un obstinado mutismo, parecen ser abrumadoras.
Sin embargo y a pesar de que el veredicto final pareciera descontado incluso ya antes de que comience el juicio, el abogado Ramsay está decidido a demostrar la inocencia de su cliente en el tribunal. Y el golpe de escena viene en la segunda parte de la película.
Sobre todo cuendo la trama deja entrever que el padre había abusado física y emocionalmente no sólo de su esposa Loretta sino también de su propio hijo.
