Nights in Rodanthe known as Noche de Tormenta or Noches de Tormenta in Spanish America, according to the country of exhibition, is a 2008 film directed by George C. Wolfe and starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane in the lead roles.
The film is none other than the film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks.
Nicholas Sparks is a writer who sets his novels in North Carolina in a mixture of love, mystery and religion, and most of them have been made into films.
However, Nights in Rodanthe is not the best adaptation of his novels, perhaps because of an excessive "visual formality" in its plot, considering that the film is aimed at a predominantly female audience.
The plot revolves around Adrienne Willis (played by Diane Lane), a divorced housewife and mother of two, and Dr. Paul Flanner, a plastic surgeon.
Adrienne decides to take some time to reflect and accepts her friend Jean's request to look after him for a few days at his inn in Rodanthe, the town from which the film takes its original name.
The two get to know each other and Paul tells Adrienne about his family situation, which is not so different: he too is divorced and has a difficult relationship with his son Mark.
Only, unlike Adrienne, who is in Rodanthe to enjoy a period of peace and quiet, his is quite the opposite.
He has travelled there to meet the husband of a patient of his who has sued him because his wife died in the doctor's operating theatre after an apparently safe operation.
This gloomy picture seems to be associated with the weather as a strong hurricane is about to hit, prompting the doctor to immediately seek out his patient's husband in order to reach an agreement while Adrienne tries to repair herself in the inn's house.
The victim's son, who rudely throws Paul out, seeks shelter from the impending storm at the old inn.
While Paul and Adrienne are preparing to take the first precautions against the hurricane, the victim's husband finally arrives to talk to the doctor.
The storm breaks and both are in danger of being crushed to death, creating a kind of sentimental symbiosis between the two.
After spending a few days together, Adrienne urges Paul to go to Ecuador to find her son, who runs a clinic in the South American country.
A year passes during which they write to each other regularly and Paul promises to return, he has made peace with his son and plans to return.
Instead of Paul, it is the son who returns and tells him that his father has died in a landslide while trying to save him during a flood of water and mud.
He leaves her Paul's sunglasses, his stethoscope and his letters as souvenirs.
Adrienne is plunged into a deep depression from which she manages to emerge thanks to the emotional support of her friend Jean and her daughter Amanda.

La película no es otra cosa que la adaptación cinematográfica de la novela homónima de Nicholas Sparks.
Nicholas Sparks es un escritor que ambienta sus novelas en Carolina del Norte en una mezcla de amor, misterio y religión y la mayor parte de ellas han sido llevadas al cine.
No obstante ello, Noches de Tormenta no es la mejor adaptación de sus novelas, tal vez a causa de una excesiva "formalidad visual" en su trama teniendo en cuenta que la película está dirigida a un público prevalentemente femenino.
La trama gira alrededor de Adrienne Willis (interpretada por Diane Lane) que es ama de casa y madre de dos hijos, divorciada, y el Dr. Paul Flanner, cirujano plástico.
Adrienne decide tomarse un tiempo para reflexionar y acepta la petición de su amiga Jean para cuidarle durante unos días su posada en Rodanthe, localidad d ela cuúl tome el nombre original de la película.
Ambos se conocen y Paul confía a Adrienne su siatuación familiar que no es muy distinta: divorciado también él, con una difícil relación con su hijo Mark.
Solo que, a diferencia de Adrienne que está en Rodanthe para gozar d eun período de paz y tranquilidad lo suyo es totalmente lo opuesto.
Ha viajado hasta ese lugar para reunirse con el marido de una paciente suya que lo ha demandado a causa de que su esposa murió en el quirófano del médico despu0s de una intervención aparentemente no riesgosa.
A este panorama sombrío parece asociarse el tiempo ya que un fuerte huracán está a punto de desatarse, lo que lleva al médico a buscar inmediatamente al marido de su paciente para llegar a un acuerdomientras Adrienne trata de repararse en la casa de la posada.
El hijo de la víctima que echa de mala manera a Paul quien busca refugio ante la inminencia del temporal en la vieja posada.
Mientras Paul y Adrienne preparan a adoptar las primeras medidas de precaución contra el huracán llega finalmente el marido de la víctima para hablar con el mádico.
Se desata el temporal y ambos corren el riesgo de morir aplastados lo que crea entre ambos una especie de simbiosis sentimental.
Después de pasar unos días juntos Adrienne insta a Paul a ir hasta Ecuador para encontrar a su hijo, que dirige una clínica en aquel país sudamericano.
Pasa un año durante el cuál se escriben asiduamente y Paul le promete de regresar, ha hecho las paces con su hijo y planea el regreso.
En vez de Paul el que regresa es el hijo quien le cuenta que su padre ha muerto en un desprendimiento de tierra mientras intentaba salvarlo durante un aluvión de agua y barro.
Le deja como recuerdos los anteojos de sol de Paul, su estetoscopia y sus cartas.
Adrienne queda sumida en una profunda depresión de la cuál logra salir gracias al apoyo anímico de su amiga Jean y su hija Amanda.
