In this post I want to go into detail about Three Identical Strangers, so I'll give a few small spoilers for good discussion. This is a warning in case you want to watch the documentary knowing absolutely nothing.
First, let's go back to the beginning.
You're in the year 1980. Your name is Bobby, you're 19 years old. Imagine you're driving to your first day of college. You've never been the popular kid in your earlier years but strangely, as you arrive, boys come up to you and greet you enthusiastically, girls hug you. Confused, you respond and continue on your way. As you reach your dorm, you hear a shout:
Hey, Eddy!
You turn around and see a boy, paralyzed, who all he manages to say is:
Are you adopted?
Yes, you reply.
When is your birthday?
July 12th, 1961.
There, without knowing it, you changed your life completely.
You find out, then, that someone named Eddy is very similar to you and that he had also attended that university. You manage to call him and ask him the above questions. Finally, you ask him the name of the adoption agency:
Louise Wise Services
The same agency where they adopted you.
The only way to describe the first meeting between Bobby and Eddy is: ''it was as if they were a reflection in a mirror''. After 19 years, two twins separated at birth, by chance and fate, found their way to each other. This news was not long in coming and, of course, was trending in several newspapers.
One day, Bobby's mother receives a call:
My name is David, I think I may be the third one.
On the first time the triplets meet an instant connection happens, without even having a day together, within hours they were rolling on the floor together, laughing. It was as Bobby himself described it:
When I tell people my story, they don't believe it. I guess I wouldn't believe the story if someone else were telling it, but , I'm telling it and it's true, every word of it.
They smoked the same brand of cigarettes, had similar taste in women, and had had fights at some point in their lives. As if there were few coincidences, they each had a sister in their family.
Three Identical Strangers is a documentary about a real-life case, directed by Tim Wardle and released in 2018. In addition to giving us the interview by the real family and siblings, it tells us how their life was after the encounter and what was a heartwarming story, ended up taking a dark turn.
There were a lot of questions behind why none of the parents knew that their son had a brother, let alone two. When they go to the agency the 6 representatives to ask for explanations, the answer they get from Louise Wise Services is:
If you all found out they were triplets, it would be harder to find them a home.
At first, it seemed a reasonable, if unsatisfactory, response.
Journalist Lawrence Wright simultaneously discovers a disturbing book that mentioned twins being separated at birth to discover, to put it simply, whether our personality and who we are comes from nature or nurture. The agency lending itself to these studies was, of course, Louise Wise Services.
As you might guess, these triplets were not the only ones who were separated for *''scientific'' reasons, but more twins met the same fate. They were placed in families that already had a child to have a better comparison between parenting and made periodic visits to observe the progress of the siblings, never mentioning to them that they had just checked on a child who looked like them.
All these study files, annotations, conclusions and results were never published. On the contrary, they were hidden and set aside in a university, with the clause that they cannot be opened until 2065. However, at the end of the documentary, we're informed that access to certain files could be obtained, so those involved can review the information.
Eddy unfortunately never got to see them or find out why with his siblings as he was diagnosed with manic depression, was institutionalized for 3 weeks and, after leaving, committed suicide at home in 1995, at the age of 34.
Now here's where Three Identical Strangers leaves us with questions like:
Were all these coincidences in the triplets pure coincidence or were we just looking for these similarities?
Were the subjects' mental illnesses the result of discovering separation, parenting, or just genetics?
Do we become who we are by nature or is it pure nurture that shapes us?
How many subjects did they experience with and how many will live their entire lives without knowing their brother or sister?
A curious fact is that the triplets were actually quadruplets, their brother died at birth and this fact was revealed after the documentary was released.

Primero, volvamos al principio.
Estás en el año 1980. Tu nombre es Bobby, tienes 19 años. Imagina que estás yendo en auto a tu primer día de universidad. Nunca has sido el chico popular en tus años anteriores pero extrañamente, al llegar, chicos se te acercan y te saludan con entusiasmo, las chicas te abrazan. Confundido, respondes y sigues tu camino. ¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños?
12 de julio de 1961.
Ahí, sin saberlo, cambiaste tu vida por completo.
Te enteras, entonces, que alguien llamado Eddy es muy parecido a ti y que también había cursado en esa universidad. Logras llamarlo y hacerle las preguntas anteriores. Finalmente, le preguntas el nombre de la agencia de adopción:

La misma agencia donde te adoptaron a ti.
La única forma de describir el primer encuentro entre Bobby y Eddy es: ´´fue como si fueran el reflejo de un espejo´´. Después de 19 años, dos gemelos separados al nacer, por obra de la casualidad y el destino, encontraron el camino hacia el otro. Esta noticia no se hizo esperar y, por supuesto, fue tendencia en varios periódicos.
Un día, la madre de Bobby recibe una llamada:
Mi nombre es David, creo que yo puedo ser el tercero.
En la primera vez que se reúnen los trillizos sucede una conexión instantánea, sin tener ni un día juntos, a las horas ya estaban revolcándose en el suelo juntos, riendo. Fue como lo describió el propio Bobby:
Cuando le cuento a la gente mi historia, no se la creen. Supongo que no se creerían la historia si la contara otra persona, pero , la estoy contando yo y es verdad, cada palabra.
Fumaban la misma marca de cigarros, tenían un gusto similar en mujeres y habían hecho peleas en algún momento de su vida. Como si fueran pocas las coincidencias, cada uno tenía una hermana en su familia.
Three Identical Strangers es un documental sobre un caso de la vida real, dirigido por Tim Wardle y estrenada en 2018. Además de ofrecernos la entrevista por la familia y hermanos reales, nos relata cómo fue la vida de estos después del encuentro y lo que era una historia conmovedora, terminó por tomar un giro oscuro.
Había muchas preguntas detrás del por qué ninguno de los padres sabía que su hijo tenía un hermano, ni mucho menos dos. Cuando van a la agencia los 6 representantes a pedir explicaciones, las respuesta que obtienen de Louise Wise Services es:
Si se enteraban que eran trillizos, sería más difícil encontrarles un hogar.
Al principio, parecía una respuesta razonable, aunque no satisfactoria.
El periodista Lawrence Wright, simultáneamente, descubre un libro perturbador que mencionaba gemelos siendo separados al nacer para descubrir, en pocas palabras, si nuestra personalidad y lo que somos viene de la naturaleza o de la crianza. La agencia prestándose para estos estudios fue, por supuesto, Louise Wise Services.
Como ya supondrán, estos trillizos no fueron los únicos que fueron separados por motivos *´´científicos´´, sino que más gemelos tuvieron el mismo destino. Los ubicaron en familias que ya tenían un hijo para tener una mejor comparación entre crianzas y realizaban visitas periódicas para observar el avance de los hermanos, nunca mencionándoles que acababan de checar a un niño parecido a ellos.
Todos estos archivos de estudio, las anotaciones, las conclusiones y los resultados nunca fueron publicados. Al contrario, fueron escondidos y apartados en una universidad, con la cláusula de que no pueden ser abiertos hasta el 2065. Sin embargo, al término del documental, nos informan que sí se pudo obtener acceso a ciertos archivos, así que los implicados pueden revisar la información.
Lamentablemente, Eddy nunca pudo verlos ni descubrir el por qué con sus hermanos pues fue diagnosticado con depresión maníaca, lo internaron en un centro por 3 semanas y, luego de salir, cometió suicidio en su casa en 1995, a sus 34 años.
He aquí donde Three Identical Strangers nos deja con preguntas como:
¿Fueron todas estas coincidencias en los trillizos pura casualidad o es que estábamos buscando estas similitudes?
¿Fueron las enfermedades mentales que sufrieron los sujetos a raíz de descubrir la separación, la crianza o solo por genética?
¿Somos quienes somos por la naturaleza o es pura crianza la que nos forma?
¿Con cuántos sujetos experimentaron y cuántos vivirán toda su vida sin saber de su hermano o hermana?
Un dato curioso es que los trillizos realmente eran cuatrillizos, su hermano murió al nacer y este dato fue revelado después de estrenar el documental.
