Hope opens with Dong-hoon (Sul Kyung-gu) and Mi-hee (Uhm Ji-won), on an ordinary day with their 8-year-old daughter, So-won. As usual, the mother sends off her little girl along with her friend to go on their way to school. The boy leaves her behind and So-won is left alone as she heads to her school. She never arrived.
The news reports a yellow umbrella found at a construction site, and a girl in a desolate room with grotesque injuries and bruises. She needed emergency surgery, and it's no surprise that both parents are as devastated as their daughter.
Hope deals with one of the strongest issues for me: child abuse. Both the emotional and physical consequences that the girl suffers are demonstrated in this film, and how it deeply affects her family. In addition, they must deal with the pressure of the media and the boldness of the reporters to get a testimony even going as far as disrespecting the space the victim needs.
Hope was directed by Lee Joon-ik, who has a long journey of films such as The Book of Fish (2021) and Sunset in My Hometown (2018); and the screenplay written by Ji-hye Kim. This movie was released, in South Korea, in 2013 but it wasn't until 2017 that it was streamed on other platforms, such as Netflix.
I think what hurt me the most about Hope was the fact that it was based on a real case, known as Na-young Case, which happened around December 2008 and is exactly as the movie tells it: an 8-year-old girl (whose alias was Na-young) was kidnapped and raped on her way to school by Choo Doo Soon, a 57-year-old man who was drunk at the time. She did sustain serious injuries to her internal organs, and was able to survive.
Cho was convicted and the sentence for his crime was merely 12 years. 12 years for physically and emotionally scarring a girl for life. 12 years where the victim will live knowing that her assailant will be released when she's 22 years old. Indeed, by this time, he's already free.
It came as no surprise that the "resolution" of the case provoked discontent and outrage, not only by the victim's family, but by residents in the area of the aggressor. The film tries to give us hope at the end, but I couldn't feel any worse. This sort of thing really gets to me and I wish I hadn't seen it.

Como de costumbre, la madre despide a su niña junto con su amigo para que vayan de camino a la escuela. El niño la deja atrás y So-won se queda sola mientras se dirige a su colegio. Nunca llegó.
Las noticias reportan un paraguas amarillo encontrado en un sitio de construcción, y a una niña en un cuarto desolado y con heridas grotescas y golpes. Necesitó cirugía de urgencias y no es sorpresa que ambos padres estén tan destrozados como su hija.
Hope trata uno de los temas más fuertes para mí: el abuso infantil. Las consecuencias tanto emocionales como físicas que sufre la niña son demostradas en esta película, y cómo esto afecta profundamente a su familia. Además, deben lidiar con la presión de los medios y el atrevimiento de los reporteros para conseguir un testimonio llegando, incluso, a irrespetar el espacio que la víctima necesita.
Hope fue dirigida por Lee Joon-ik, quien tiene una larga travesía de películas como The Book of Fish (2021) y Sunset in My Hometown (2018); y el guión escrito por Ji-hye Kim. Esta película fue estrenada, en Corea del Sur, en el 2013 pero no fue hasta el 2017 que fue transmitida en otras plataformas, como Netflix.
Creo que lo que me dolió más de Hope fue el hecho de que estaba basada en un caso real, conocido como Na-young Case, que sucedió alrededor de diciembre del 2008 y es exacto como lo relata la película: una niña de 8 años (cuyo alias fue Na-young) fue secuestrada y violada en su camino a la escuela por Choo Doo Soon, un hombre de 57 años que se encontraba alcoholizado en el momento. La niña sí tuvo heridas graves en sus órganos internos, y pudo sobrevivir.
Cho fue apresado y la sentencia de su crimen fueron meramente 12 años. 12 años por dejar marcas físicas y emocionales de por vida a una niña. 12 años donde la víctima vivirá sabiendo que su agresor será liberado cuando ella tenga 22 años. De hecho, para estas fechas, él ya se encuentra libre.
No fue sorpresa que la "resolución" del caso provocó descontento e indignación, no solo por la familia de la víctima, sino por los residentes que se encuentran de la zona del agresor. La película intenta darnos esperanza al final, pero no podría sentirme peor. Esta clase de cosas me afecta mucho y ojalá no la hubiese visto.
