If you don't know much about Jordan Peele (which I doubt), he's an actor, producer and film director you'll not only recognize for Get Out, but also for producing Candyman (2021), which is set years after the horror trilogy released in 1992, 1995 and 1999. Coming up in July 2022 is his new film Nope which, already by watching the trailer, I'm excited to see what other story Peele will bring us.
Continuing with Us, it tells the story of a little girl, Adelaide Wilson, who gets lost one night at a carnival and enters, all alone, the house of mirrors. Among so many distortions of herself, there's one in particular that caught her attention; when she approaches, she observes how her own reflection smiles at her. When she came out, she was never the same again. She had to relearn how to speak, for from the shock she suffered great trauma and stress.
Throughout her life, Adelaide was silent about what happened, always preparing for the worst, for she sensed that a black cloud was over us all. Little did she know that the time of the storm was near.
Now an adult with a husband and children, Adelaide returns to Santa Cruz, California, with the purpose of vacationing in her hometown and spending time with her friends, the Tylers. After experiencing a scare when her son wandered away for a few minutes, they arrive at her childhood home. That same night, four masked intruders break in and kidnap them.
The whole family is tied up in front of the fireplace and, when the assailants reveal their faces, the Wilsons know terror: they look exactly like them. Or, rather, a more disturbing version.
The Adelaide look-alike begins to speak, in a grotesque, husky voice:
Once upon a time, there was a girl and the girl had a shadow. The two were connected, tethered together. And the girl ate, her food was given to her warm and tasty. But when the shadow was hungry, he had to eat rabbit raw and bloody.
We'll understand, then, that they may be alike in physical appearance, but they had very different lives. Here our questions arise: where did they come from, from the mirror as we saw with Adelaide or from somewhere else? why did they appear? why are they like an evil version of the ''originals''?
Then the girl had her first child, a beautiful baby girl. But the shadow, she gave birth to a little monster. Umbrae was born laughing. The girl had a second child, a boy this time. They had to cut her open and take him from her belly. The shadow had to do it all herself. She named him Pluto, he was born to love fire.
While Adelaide and her family manage to escape, they'll soon discover that they aren't the only ones being attacked by their doppelgängers. The entire United States, in one night, is being attacked by people who have the same face and body. It was a premeditated act, planned for months and maybe even years. We'll know better as the film runs its course and reveals the truth.
I needed to make a statement that the whole world would see. It's our time now. Our time up there. And to think, if it weren't for you, I never would have danced at all.
I thought the choice of actors in Us was spot on, the lead is Lupita Nyong'o who, if you don't recognize from her recent role in The 355 (2022) or Black Panther (2018), I'm sure you've seen her in her moving performance in 12 Years a Slave (2013). Our other leading man, Winston Duke, also appeared in films such as 9 Days (2021) and has recurring appearances in Marvel.
The very idea that, in one night, a duplicate of me would want to kill me and take my place, is terrifying. The curiosity of where these doppelgängers come from, whether from a different dimension or an experiment; is what kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the film. However, when we were given that long-awaited explanation, my brother and I found a few holes regarding the logistics, although the idea sounded interesting. I also didn't see much sense in the ''message'' they wanted to give by killing their doubles and wanting to take over the world, but it does have a bit of logic to it: after having your whole life taken away, just by being born, only hatred and resentment can come out of it.
Mind you, I did like that, in the ending, they completely destroyed the concept we have of the main character. Truly, I didn't expect it, I loved that detail. Can' t wait to see more from this director, so I will wait for July to come and release Nope.

Continuando con Us, nos cuenta la historia de una pequeña niña, Adelaide Wilson, que en una noche de feria se pierde y entra, completamente sola, a la casa de los espejos. Entre tantas distorsiones de sí misma, hay una en particular que le llamó la atención; cuando se acerca, observa cómo su propio reflejo le sonríe. Al salir, ya no volvió a ser la misma. Tuvo que volver a aprender a hablar, pues del shock sufrió un gran trauma y estrés.

La familia entera está atada en frente de la chimenea y, cuando los agresores revelan sus rostros, los Wilson conocen el terror: Son exactamente iguales a ellos. O, mejor dicho, una versión más perturbadora.
La parecida a Adelaide comienza a hablar, con una voz grotesca y ronca:
Había una vez una niña y la niña tenía una sombra. Las dos estaban conectadas, unidas. Y la niña comía, le daban comida caliente y sabrosa. Pero cuando la sombra tenía hambre, tenía que comer conejo crudo y ensangrentado.
Comprenderemos, entonces, que podrán ser iguales en apariencia física, pero tuvieron vidas muy distintas. Aquí surgen nuestras preguntas: ¿de dónde vienen, del espejo como vimos con Adelaide o de otro lugar? ¿por qué aparecieron? ¿por qué son como una versión malvada de los ‘’originales’’?
Entonces la chica tuvo su primer hijo, una hermosa niña. Pero la sombra dio a luz a un pequeño monstruo. Umbrae nació riendo. La chica tuvo un segundo hijo, un niño esta vez. Tuvieron que abrirla y sacarlo de su vientre. La sombra tuvo que hacerlo todo ella misma. Lo llamó Plutón, nació para amar el fuego.
Mientras Adelaide y su familia logran escapar, pronto descubrirán que no son los únicos siendo atacados por sus doppelgängers. Todo Estados Unidos, en una misma noche, está siendo agredido por personas que tienen su mismo rostro y cuerpo. Fue un acto premeditado, planeado desde hace meses e, incluso, puede que hasta años. Lo sabremos mejor a medida que la película siga su curso y nos revele la verdad.
Necesitaba hacer una declaración que el mundo entero viera. Ahora es nuestro momento. Nuestro tiempo allí arriba. Y pensar que si no fuera por ti, nunca habría bailado.
La elección de los actores en Us me pareció muy acertada, la protagonista es Lupita Nyong'o que, si no reconocen por su reciente papel en The 355 (2022) o Black Panther (2018), sí estoy segura que la habrán visto en su conmovedora actuación en 12 años de esclavitud (2013). La sola idea de que, en una noche, un duplicado de mi quiera asesinarme y tomar mi lugar, es aterradora. La curiosidad de saber de dónde vienen estos doppelgängers, si de una dimensión diferente o un experimento; es lo que me mantuvo al borde del asiento durante toda la película. Sin embargo, cuando nos dieron esa tan esperada explicación, mi hermano y yo encontramos unos cuantos huecos con respecto a la logística, aunque la idea sonó interesante. Tampoco le vi mucho sentido al ‘’mensaje’’ que quisieron dar matando a sus dobles y deseando tomar el control del mundo, pero tiene un poco de lógica: después de haber sido toda tu vida arrebatada, por el solo hecho de nacer, solo odio y resentimiento puede salir de allí.
Eso sí, me gustó que, en el final, nos destruyeran por completo el concepto que tenemos de la protagonista. De verdad, no lo esperaba, amé ese detalle. Estoy ansiosa por ver más de este director, así que esperaré a que llegue julio y se estrene Nope.
