There was a time when my family and I had to live at my grandmother's house, and she only had cable service (famous in Venezuela) and no internet. So, every night, after taking a bath and exhausted from college, I would sit down without fail to watch the new episode of SVU on TNT, followed by one of Chicago Fire. I'd even, sometimes, stay up until Chicago P.S was over.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
In the criminal justice system, sexually based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit. These are their stories.
Created by Dick Wolf, *SVU started in 1999 and is still running for 23 seasons, making it the only TV show that has been on the air the longest after the cancellation of Law & Order in 2010.
SVU since two years ago, has marked a before and after in my life. Although I don't think I've been able to watch it since its first season, I feel that everyone should at least watch a few episodes of it.
A sexual assault is any act of a sexual nature that threatens your integrity and that is without your consent and this is a fairly broad concept. It means that not only penetration is considered rape, that not necessarily all abuse is brutal and aggressive; there's a whole scale of grayscale with respect to these types of situations.
SVU shows us, with different cases in each episode, all the types of victims and aggressors that can exist. It shows us that the fact that there has been an orgasm on the part of the assaulted doesn't mean that she has 'enjoyed' it, it's a biological reaction that, interpreted in a bad way, can confuse and embarrass the victim. In most cases, the abusers aren't male suspects in a white van, it can be one's own family, friends, co-workers, authority figures of any kind.
Thanks to SVU I was able to learn how to talk to a survivor, recognize the signs of abuse and a predator. Knowing how not to blame the victim, but to understand and listen to the victim is something I think is important for all of us to know.
Although I think what I like most about SVU is that, in almost every case, they end up locking up the culprit as they put all their effort into finding them and getting justice for the victims. Very different from the real world, if you ask me. Sometimes it's nice to believe that a fair system does exist, even if it's in a fictional TV show.
Chicago Fire
In the city of Chicago, there's Station 51, made up of several firefighters and paramedics who are connected by a single passion: saving lives.
At first, I watched it out of simple boredom after the SVU episode ended, but it wasn't long before I became attached to the TV show and wanted to watch it non-stop. It was created in 2012 by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, and is now in its 10th season of chaotic fires and rescued victims.
Like SVU, Chicago Fire teaches us important things like what to do in the face of a fire, the various protocols to follow depending on the residence and the number of possible victims. I like that we get to see these heroes in action, and it's simply admirable.
Not only will we see the professional side of the characters, but also their personal lives and how they relate to each other. Disobeying your superior is more serious in these cases, because it can be the difference between life and death.
Every episode is thrilling, every fire is an imminent risk. While, few characters are killed in action (and, when it happens, it hurts our hearts), I feel the TV show is realistic in terms of protocols, safety measures and procedures, and we're still on the edge of our seats when the firefighters last a long time in the middle of all that fire.
Some of my favorite parts is when all of these TV shows interact with each other. It's thrilling when SVU works in partnership with Station 51 or the Chicago P.D police team. Seriously to see my favorite characters work together, it's indescribable and it's something unique to experience with these TV shows, unlike other worlds that never get to cross paths.

En el sistema de justicia penal, los delitos de carácter sexual se consideran especialmente atroces. En la ciudad de Nueva York, los dedicados detectives que investigan estos viles delitos son miembros de un escuadrón de élite conocido como la Unidad de Víctimas Especiales. Estas son sus historias.
Creada por Dick Wolf, SVU fue lanzada al aire en 1999 y aún sigue vigente con 23 temporadas, siendo así la única serie que tiene más tiempo transmitiendo después de la cancelación de La Ley y el Orden en 2010.
SVU desde hace dos años, ha marcado un antes y después en mi vida. Aunque no me creo capaz de verla desde su primera temporada, siento que todos deberían, al menos, ver unos cuantos episodios de esta serie.
Una agresión sexual es todo acto de índole sexual que amenace a tu integridad y que sea sin tu consentimiento y esto es un concepto bastante amplio. Significa que no solo la penetración se considera violación, que no necesariamente todos los abusos sean brutales y agresivos; existe toda una escala de grises con respecto a este tipo de situaciones.
SVU nos muestra, con diferentes casos en cada episodio, todo los tipos de víctimas y agresores que pueden existir. Nos enseña que el hecho de que haya habido un orgasmo por parte de la agredida no significa que lo haya ‘disfrutado’, es una reacción biológica que, interpretada de una mala manera, puede llegar a confundir y avergonzar a la víctima. En la mayoría de los casos, los abusadores no son hombres sospechosos en una van blanca, puede ser la propia familia, los amigos, los compañeros de trabajo, las figuras de autoridad de cualquier índole.
Gracias a SVU pude aprender cómo hablar con una sobreviviente, reconocer los signos del abuso y de un depredador. Conocer cómo no culpabilizar a la víctima, sino entenderla y escucharla es algo que me parece importante que todos sepamos.
Aunque creo que lo que más me gusta de SVU es que, en casi todos los casos, terminan encerrando al culpable pues ponen todo su esfuerzo en encontrarlo y hacer justicia por las víctimas. Muy diferente al mundo real, si me lo preguntan. A veces es bueno creer que sí existe un sistema justo, aunque sea en una serie ficticia.
Chicago Fire
En la ciudad de Chicago, está la estación 51, formada por varios bomberos y paramédicos que están conectados por una sola pasión: salvar vidas.
Al principio, la veía por simple aburrimiento después de que el episodio de SVU terminara, pero no pasó mucho tiempo para que me encariñara con la serie y deseaba verla sin parar. Fue creada en el 2012 por Michael Brandt y Derek Haas, y ya lleva 10 temporadas de incendios caóticos y víctimas rescatadas.
Como SVU, Chicago Fire nos enseña cosas importantes como qué hacer ante un incendio, los diversos protocolos a seguir según la vivienda y la cantidad de posibles víctimas. Me gusta que podamos ver a estos héroes en acción, y resulta simplemente admirable.
No solo veremos el lado profesional de los personajes, también su vida personal y cómo se relacionan entre ellos. Desobedecer a tu superior es más serio en estos casos, porque puede ser la diferencia entre la vida y la muerte.
Cada episodio es emocionante, cada incendio es un riesgo inminente. Si bien, pocos personajes mueren en acción (y, cuando sucede, nos duele en el corazón), siento que la serie es realista en cuanto a los protocolos, medidas de seguridad y procedimientos, e igual nos quedamos al borde de la silla cuando los bomberos duran mucho tiempo en medio de todo ese fuego.
Una de mis partes favoritas es cuando todas estas series interactúan entre sí. Es emocionante cuando SVU trabaja en conjunto con la estación 51 o el equipo de policías de Chicago P.D. De verdad que ver a mis personajes favoritos trabajar juntos, es indescriptible y es algo que se puede vivir con estas series, a diferencia de otros mundos que nunca se llegan a cruzar.
