HBO Documentary Films introduced us, in 2018, to Mommy Dead and Dearest, directed by Erin Lee Carr, who tells the story of Gypsy Blanchard, a 24-year-old sentenced for the second-degree murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. In 2016, she was given a 10-year prison sentence.
In the initial investigation of this case, it looked pretty closed case: a daughter murdering her mother and fleeing the scene, but it was later discovered that it went far beyond that.
Gypsy Blanchard was always known as a sick child, paralyzed from the waist down and diagnosed with cancer. Along with her mother, she received donations for her expensive medications, her wheelchair and was even contacted twice by the organization Make a Wish.
However, one of the doctors Gypsy went to on one of her many visits to the clinic made a report that Dee Dee Blanchard probably suffered from Munchausen by Proxy, a rare disorder where the parent incites or provokes symptoms of illness in the person they're caring for. Dr. Marc Feldman, interviewed in the documentary, elaborates that she kept doing it because she got emotional gratification in ''helping'' his sick daughter, although she also received a monetary benefit from it.
People thought of us as the sweetest mother-daughter family ever
Gypsy tells us how Dee Dee shaved her head because "eventually, her hair would fall out from the cancer." A lot of her own teeth fell out because of the side effects of the many medications her mother made her take (such as, for example, medicines prescribed to oncology patients).
Naively, Gypsy believed she was sick, except that she was aware that her mother forced her to hide the fact that she could walk. For years, she had to pretend to be paralyzed by ''muscular dystrophy,'' always remaining seated in her wheelchair.
I went on blind faith that a mother knows best
So, you may be wondering, where was this little girl's father?
Rod Blanchard had already separated from Dee Dee when Gypsy was born, and within three months, already his ex-partner was calling him to inform him that their daughter would need a breathing machine. It isn't certain whether she needed it or not, but this was the beginning of a long string of lies.
In 2011, Gypsy made an escape attempt after meeting a man at a science fiction convention, but on her way to Arkansas, before meeting him, Dee Dee tracked her down and took her back home, destroying Gypsy's computer and cell phone upon arrival.

Years later, Gypsy could not take this imprisonment any longer and planned, along with her boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, the murder of her mother.
The documentary presents us with text messages between the boyfriend and girlfriend, exclusive videos from the interrogation room in the first moments of the murder, home videos and interviews with Gypsy and Dee Dee's family members, and consultations with health professionals about Gypsy's medical history.
According to Dr. Marc Feldman, Gypsy may have some degree of sociopathy, as the messages she posted on Facebook show no signs of guilt or remorse. Of course, being exposed to so much manipulation and mistreatment all her life, something had to be learned from her mother's patterns. Dee Dee was so unappreciated that her relatives ended up flushing her ashes down the toilet.
Form your own opinions, do they justify the daughter's actions, after a lifetime of emotional abuse, physical abuse and believing she was sick? She was deprived of enjoying her own life, and as doomed as it was to murder her mother, it was a desperate attempt to be free.
Was it because of his childhood and his mother's mistreatment that she agreed to participate in his mother's murder or, in another world, under different conditions, would she have done the same?
So why did the father, after all his experience with Dee Dee, blindly believe her when she said Gypsy needed a machine to breathe? Why didn't he inquire further? Did he really trust her or did he want to get out of the trouble of caring for a sickly child?
¿Gypsy will be happy that, upon her release from prison, she'll be able to live the life she always had to live or, rather, sad for all that she missed out on?

El documental nos presenta los mensajes de texto entre los novios, videos exclusivos de la sala de interrogatorio en los primeros momentos del asesinato, videos caseros y entrevistas con los familiares de Gypsy y Dee Dee, y consultas a profesionales de la salud sobre el historial médico de Gypsy.
Según el Dr. Marc Feldman, puede que Gypsy tenga algún grado de sociopatía, pues los mensajes que posteó en Facebook no muestran signos de culpabilidad o remordimiento. Claro, ser expuesta a tanta manipulación y maltrato toda su vida, algo tuvo que aprender de los patrones de su madre. Dee Dee era tan poco apreciada que sus familiares terminaron por tirar sus cenizas en el inodoro.
Formen sus propias opiniones, ¿justifican las acciones de la hija, después de toda una vida de abuso emocional, maltrato físico y creer que estaba enferma? Fue privada de disfrutar su propia vida, y por más condenada que haya sido asesinar a su madre, fue un intento desesperado de ser libre.
¿Fue a raíz de su infancia y el maltrato de su madre que aceptó participar en el asesinato de su madre o, en otro mundo, en diferentes condiciones, hubiese hecho lo mismo?
¿Por qué el padre, después de toda su experiencia con Dee Dee, creyó ciegamente en ella cuando dijo que Gypsy necesitaba una máquina para respirar? ¿Por qué no indagó más? ¿Realmente confiaba en ella o quería librarse del problema de cuidar a una niña enfermiza?
¿Gypsy estará feliz de que, al salir de prisión, podrá vivir la vida que siempre tuvo que vivir o, más bien, triste por todo lo que se perdió?
