The plot, which I found interesting, was the following: there's a place where souls are created and an Interviewer is in charge of choosing which of those souls will be granted the opportunity to live, after 9 days of questions and tests; being the ones not chosen, discarded. Our Interviewer's name is Will, he lives in an isolated house and sits all day watching the lives and experiences of his chosen subjects in first person through televisions. One day, his most adored selected, Amanda, commits suicide before her big concert, vacating her place for a new soul to be chosen and leaving Will in bewilderment and grief.
Left with no time to mourn, five souls knock on the door of their home to apply for the job of living: Maria, Alexander, Mike, Kane and Emma. As different from each other as any other. Maria is dreamy, Alexander is just looking to relax and not think too much about life, Mike is insecure, Kane is realistic and tough, and Emma is...well, Emma, she calmly challenges every one of Will's questions and disputes the test.
Edson Oda is the director and writer of 9 days, he's a Japanese-Brazilian short film and music video maker. At the Sundance Film Festival 2020 , his first major film 9 days won the Walt Salt Screenwriting Award and, in 2021, was already available to the public.
Winston Duke as Will isn't the only familiar face we'll see, as Bill Skarsgård, who starred in It takes part as Kane. Zazie Beetz, who had a role in both Deadpool and The Joker, is the defiant and positive Emma. Dr. Strange's faithful sidekick, Benedict Wong, will be the source of our laughs throughout the film playing Kyo.
9 days is not a movie that goes to extremes to thrill us, it's slow paced, where the trials and interviews are calm and thoughtful. I really liked that most of the tests weren't those situations where you have to choose between killing or dying, but simple things: describe what you like or why this situation didn't please you, what would you do. We always end up asking ourselves, did he/she do it right, will they be eliminated?
We imagine ourselves in their situation. Will our most honest answer, which reveals who we really are, be enough to judge whether or not we deserve to live? What criteria will the other interviewers have for choosing between the souls? As we may discover with Will, being a good person isn't reason enough to have the opportunity and some may not be cut out to face life as it is: a mountain of good times and bad, which you choose to keep climbing or not.
What about the good memories?
Good memories, bad memories, they're all just the same right now. It still hurts... In a way that no one can see, and only I can feel.
Little by little, we'll notice that the real protagonist is Will and he will show us the pain it means to see his chosen ones, whom he accompanies every moment of their lives, being hurt and suffering. These experiences formed his way of interviewing, so he only chooses the candidates who have what it takes to ''survive'', because the world isn't only full of rainbows and beaches and people are cruel and selfish. We'll feel with him his rage, helplessness and frustration, it's only at the end that we'll see the real Will, the one who was once alive.
And no doubt that he's experienced so much pain to a point where he felt so much that today he just wants to feel nothing. And the numbness, it makes him feel safe now. But I know that it's really just poisoning what is left of him.
This man…He sounds irreparable.
He thinks so. But I know there's still something left.
For me, the ending is one of the best moments of 9 days, they focus mostly on Will and his amazing speech. It's full of emotion, laughter and sadness, it left me with goosebumps and tears on my face. It's a poignant and bittersweet ending, the last words of which resonate with us as the screens go black:
You will hardly know who I am or what I mean
But I shall be good health to you nevertheless
Failing to fetch me at first, keep encouraged
Missing me one place, search another
I stop someplace
Waiting for you

El argumento que me pareció interesante, fue el siguiente: existe un lugar donde las almas se crean y un Entrevistador se encarga de elegir a cuál de dichas almas se le otorgará la oportunidad de vivir, después de 9 días de preguntas y pruebas; siendo las no escogidas, desechadas. Nuestro Entrevistador se llama Will, vive en una casa aislada y se sienta todo el día viendo en primera persona, a través de televisores, las vidas y experiencias de los sujetos que eligió. Un día, su más adorada seleccionada, Amanda, se suicida antes de su gran concierto, desocupando su lugar para que una nueva alma sea elegida y dejando a Will en desconcierto y dolor.
No teniendo tiempo de luto, cinco almas tocan la puerta de su casa para aplicar al puesto de vivir: Maria, Alexander, Mike, Kane y Emma. Tan diferentes entre sí como cualquier otro. Maria es soñadora, Alexander solo busca relajarse y no pensar mucho de la vida, Mike es inseguro, Kane es realista y duro, y Emma es…bueno, Emma, ella desafía calmadamente cada una de las preguntas de Will y cuestiona las pruebas.

9 days no es una película que llega a extremos para emocionarnos, es de paso lento, donde las pruebas y entrevistas son calmadas y reflexivas. Me gustó mucho que la mayoría de las pruebas no hayan sido de esas situaciones en las que haya que elegir entre matar o morir, sino cosas sencillas: describe lo que te gusta o ¿por qué esta situación no te agradó? ¿qué harías tú?. Siempre nos terminamos preguntando, ¿lo hizo bien? ¿lo eliminará?.
Nos imaginamos en su situación. Nuestra respuesta más sincera, que revela quiénes somos en realidad, ¿será suficiente para juzgar si merecemos o no vivir? ¿Qué criterio tendrán los demás entrevistadores para elegir entre las almas? Como podremos descubrir con Will, ser una buena persona no es razón suficiente para tener la oportunidad y puede que algunos no estén hechos para afrontar la vida tal y como es: una montaña de buenos y malos momentos, que decides seguir escalando o no.
¿Y los buenos recuerdos?
Buenos recuerdos, malos recuerdos, todos son iguales ahora. Todavía duele... De una manera que nadie puede ver, y sólo yo puedo sentir.
Poco a poco, notaremos que el verdadero protagonista es Will y nos enseñará el dolor que significa ver que sus elegidos, a quienes acompaña en cada momento de sus vidas, son lastimados y sufren. Estas experiencias formaron su manera de entrevistar, así que solo elige los candidatos que tienen lo necesario para ‘’sobrevivir’’, porque el mundo no está lleno solo de arcoiris y playas y las personas son crueles y egoístas. Sentiremos con él su rabia, impotencia y frustración, solo al final es que veremos al verdadero Will, al que alguna vez estuvo vivo.
Y sin duda que ha experimentado tanto dolor hasta el punto de sentir tanto que hoy solo quiere no sentir nada. Y el adormecimiento, lo hace sentir seguro ahora. Pero sé que en realidad sólo está envenenando lo que queda de él.
Este hombre... Parece irreparable.
Él cree que sí. Pero sé que todavía queda algo.
Para mí, el final es uno de los mejores momentos de 9 days, se enfocan mayormente en Will y en su increíble discurso. Está lleno de emoción, risa y tristeza, me dejó con la piel de gallina y lágrimas en el rostro. Es un final conmovedor y agridulce, cuyas últimas palabras resuenan en nosotros mientras la pantallas se vuelve negra:
Apenas sabrás quién soy o qué quiero decir
Pero a pesar de todo te daré buena salud
Si no me encuentras al principio, sigue animado
Perdiéndome en un lugar, busca en otro
Me detengo en algún lugar
Esperando por ti
