When we talk about revenge, we often have the moral aspect of humanity as a premise. It is, in itself, just another emotion. Obviously, if it is not well channelled, it can be dangerous and has the potential to mark us for life. However, it is rarely handled in an adequate way in world cinema. I won't go into examples of films that have overexposed the making of endless films with excessive violence, action scenes, and even a cult of superheroes behind this idea. However, I do want to mention a film that is based on a black comedy drama, which touches on very controversial issues: racism, gender violence, revenge and above all, social criticism. "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" is its name and this is its review.
Cuando hablamos de venganza, muchas veces tenemos como premisa el aspecto moral de la humanidad. Es en sí, una emoción más. Que evidentemente si no es bien canalizada, puede ser peligrosa y tiene el potencial de poder marcarnos para toda la vida. Sin embargo, pocas veces es manejada de un modo adecuado en la cinematografía mundial. No me pondré aquí a dar ejemplos de películas que han sobreexpuesto el rodaje de infinidades de cintas con violencia desmedida, escenas de acción, e incluso un culto de superhéroes detrás de esta idea. No obstante, sí quiero hacer mención de un film que está basado en un drama con comedia negra, que toca temas muy polémicos: racismo, violencia de género, venganza y sobre todo, crítica social. "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri", es su nombre y esta es su review.
To properly understand this 2018 Oscar-winning film for "Best Picture", it is necessary to understand the frustration of one of the main characters. Mildred, played by Frances McDormand, is a mother who has lost faith in the judicial and political system of the city where she lives. Obviously, the name of the film tells us the location of this fictional town in the state of Missouri, in the United States, but that is a detail that if I had left it out, it would not change the narrative or the impact of this piece of Hollywood cinematic art. As I have been telling you, the protagonist has given up hope of solving her daughter's heinous crime.
No one in town seems to be following up on her case, and Mildred, in desperation, resorts to a very American trick to (powerfully) attract attention. And yes, I mean that while driving along a stretch of road that is increasingly disused, she notices three abandoned billboards, and like lightning, she is struck by the idea of placing on them a very direct and vicious criticism of the local Sheriff, showing his incompetence and inability to find out who has done this dreadful crime. What is striking about this film are the small human relationships within the film. You see, there is a secondary character who is the Sheriff's deputy, "Dixon". Racist, lives with his mother, drunk and macho.
Para entender bien a esta película ganadora de un Oscar a "Mejor Película" en el año 2018, es necesario entender la frustración de una de las protagonistas. Mildred, personificada por Frances McDormand, que es una madre que ha perdido la fe en el sistema judicial y político de la ciudad en la vive. Evidentemente, el nombre de la cinta, nos dice la locación de este pueblo ficticio en el Estado de Misuri, en Estados Unidos, pero ese es un detalle que si lo hubiese obviado, no cambiaría absolutamente nada la narración ni el impacto que tiene esta pedazo de obra de arte de la cinematografía de Hollywood. Como venía contándoles, la protagonista ha perdido las esperanzas con respecto a esclarecer el atroz crimen que sufrió su hija.
Nadie en el pueblo parece estar dándole seguimiento a su caso, y Mildred, desesperada, recurre a un truco bien estadounidense para llamar (poderosamente) la atención. Y sí, me refiero a que mientras va manejando por un tramo de carretera que está cada vez más en desuso, nota, tres carteles publicitarios abandonados, y cual rayo, le impacta la idea de colocar en ellos una muy directa y cruenta crítica al Sheriff local, mostrando su incompetencia y la incapacidad de poder dar con quien o quienes hayan hecho este espantoso crimen. Lo llamativo de este film son las pequeñas relaciones humanas que hay dentro del metraje. Verán, existe un personaje secundario que es el ayudante del Sheriff, "Dixon". Racista, vive con su madre, borracho y machista.
This "colourful" boy, on multiple occasions, (in the past) was on the verge of going down the "wrong path" but his boss and mainly his mother straightened him out and made him a police officer. The same position he held, but in this case it makes no difference whatsoever to a mother, who has not had a good time in life... (the victim's) A tough character, with a lot of anger stored up inside; thanks to a violent relationship with the father of her children, who beat her and ended up leaving her for a girl almost as young as her deceased daughter, Mildred's humanity has been diminishing. It is not that she has ceased to be present, or that we are in the presence of a "demon"; nothing like that.
Este "pintoresco" muchacho, en múltiples ocasiones, (en el pasado) estuvo a punto de irse por el "mal camino" pero su jefe y principalmente su madre enderezaron su rumbo hasta hacerlo oficial de policía. Mismo cargo que desempeñó pero que en el caso que nos compete no hace para nada la diferencia para dar respuesta a una madre, qué vaya que no la ha pasado bien en la vida...(la de la víctima) De carácter duro, con muchísima rabia guardada dentro; gracias a una relación violenta con el padre de sus hijos; que la golpeaba y terminó dejando por una chica casi tan jóven como su difunta hija, la humanidad de Mildred ha ido mermando. No es que haya dejado de estar presente, o que estemos en presencia de un "demonio"; nada que ver.
But it would be fair to point out that all this damage has had a profound effect on her. To the point that many of the shots used in this film show us the expressions on Mildred's face. Rough, coarse, indolent, sarcastic and almost unsmiling. A woman who understands that part of her life has been taken away from her, and who is in such monumental pain that it is not properly understood by anyone. Her youngest son, the boy, insults her and calls her "crazy"; her ex-husband constantly reminds her of what a "bad mother" she was to her children (special mention for the missing and murdered daughter) and to top it all off, she is seen as an obsessive lunatic by the whole town she lives in. A woman who doesn't care about the reputation of the place where her neighbours live and tries to take revenge no matter what...
And it is, under these circumstances, one might ask: who wouldn't do something similar, having these same characteristics? You have to understand that this film is totally bittersweet. This woman wants to know the truth about her daughter's murder, the authorities also want to find the killer, but they simply don't have the evidence to do so; the emotional response to such a complex subject is the marvel behind the art we see here in this film. The Chief of Police, Bill Willoughby, who strikes us as an autocratic oaf in power, ends up being one of the three figures we empathise with most in the film.
Pero sí sería justo destacar que todo ese daño ha hecho un efecto profundo en ella. Al punto, que muchos de los planos usados en esta cinta, nos muestran las expresiones del rostro de Mildred. Ásperas, toscas, indolentes, sarcásticas y sin casi sonreír. Una mujer que entiende que parte de su vida ha sido arrebatada, y que tiene un dolor tan monumental que no es debidamente entendido por nadie. Su hijo menor. el chico, la insulta y la trata de "loca"; su ex marido constantemente le recuerda lo "mala madre" que fue con sus hijos (mención especial para la hija desaparecida y asesinada) y por si fuera poco, es vista como una loca obsesiva por todo el pueblo donde habita. Una mujer que no le importa la reputación del lugar donde viven sus vecinos e intenta tomar venganza a como dé lugar...
Y es, bajo estas circunstancia, cabría la posibilidad de preguntarse: ¿quién no haría algo similar, teniendo estas mismas características? Deben entender que esta cinta es totalmente agridulce. Esta mujer quiere saber la verdad sobre el asesinato de su hija, las autoridades también quieren descubrir al asesino, pero sencillamente no tienen ninguna evidencia para lograrlo; propiciar una respuesta emocional ante un tema tan complejo es la maravilla detrás del arte que vemos aquí en este film. El Jefe de Policía, Bill Willoughby, que nos parece un patán autócrata en el Poder, termina siendo uno de las tres figuras con la que más empatizamos en todo este largometraje.
Without a doubt, Martin McDonagh's direction is spot on. He employs tension and drama but somatises it with the right doses of black humour throughout the film. Like the famous scene of Dixon listening to ABBA's "Chiquitita", or others that are also loaded with polemics, which I'm not sure if Hollywood's cancellation culture and censorship criteria could tolerate. Nevertheless, for viewing, analysing and thinking, this film is a must-see for anyone who claims to be a cinephile. A very good recommendation, and one that in my case in particular was born as inspiration for this post because of a conversation I had with a friend asking me for recommendations to enjoy on Halloween. And yes, I know. It may not be horror, but it shows human aspects that are not much discussed...
Sin lugar a dudas, la dirección de Martin McDonagh es un acierto. Este sujeto emplea la tensión y el drama pero lo somatiza con dosis acertadas de humor negro durante la cinta. Como la famosa escena de Dixon escuchando "Chiquitita" de ABBA, u otras que también están cargadas de polémicas, que no estoy muy seguro si los criterios repletos de la cultura de la cancelación y censura de Hollywood pudieran tolerar. No obstante, para ver, analizar y pensar, esta película es una referencia obligatoria para todas las personas que ostenten llamarse cinéfilas. Una recomendación acertadísima, y que en mí caso en particular nació como inspiración para este post a causa de una conversación que tuve con una amiga pidiéndome recomendaciones para disfrutar en Halloween. Y sí, ya lo sé. Quizá no sea de horror pero muestra aspectos humanos que no son muy discutidos...
