The history of cinema, as well as literature, is intimately linked to the fantasy genre. What's more, this fact goes far beyond what we can see today in cinemas around the world. The rise of the superhero genre has been on the rise since Toby Maguire's first Spiderman film in the early 2000s, after years of critical failure. Not to mention from a historical point of view. The success of this trend in cinema is undeniable. You can like it more or less, that's another matter. The reality is there, palpable for everyone...
Now, how, with this background in favour of the superhero genre, can the criticism of The Flash (2023) be so dire? Well, after watching a dozen videos on YouTube about why this film has been a fraud for everyone, including DC Comics fans, who have been longing for at least a decade for the story of Barry Allen, better known as The Flash, to come to the big screen. And the fact is that between all the back and forth, the film was always delayed or simply postponed.
La historia del cine, así como de la literatura, está íntimamente ligada al género de la fantasía. Es más, este hecho, va mucho más allá de lo que hoy podemos ver en las carteleras de los cines de todo el mundo. El auge del género de superhéroes viene en franco ascenso desde la primera película de Spiderman de Toby Maguire, a inicios de la década del 2000's, después de años de fracasos en crítica. Y ni hablar desde el punto de vista histórico. El éxito de esta tendencia en el cine es innegable. Puede gustarte más, o menos, ésa es otra. La realidad está ahí, palpable para todos...
Ahora bien, ¿cómo con estos antecedentes a favor del género de superhéroes, puede ser tan nefasta la crítica con The Flash (2023)? Bueno, después de ver una docena de vídeos en YouTube sobre por qué este film ha sido un fraude para todos; incluyendo los fanáticos de DC Comics, que anhelaban desde, al menos, una década que la historia de Barry Allen, mejor conocido como Flash, pudiera llegar a la gran pantalla. Y es que entre dimes y diretes, la realización siempre sufría algún retraso o sencillamente era postergado.
In the midst of all these historical problems linked to this film, history was repeating itself once again? What do I mean? Well, given the undoubted success that Marvel had in developing its entire cinematic universe, DC wanted to shamelessly imitate? Is this action harmful or negative? Not necessarily. The problem is that the company responsible for Thor, Iron Man and Avengers, took more than a decade to go step by step, section by section, film by film, explaining all the stories in order to develop collective interest, marketing and above all, legacies of fans eager for expectations.
So we come to the other side of the coin. Where DC, seeing that they had the most iconic heroes of the comic book world and the culture of this genre relegated by the competition, and with much more unknown characters! Because let's face it, right? Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Superman are vastly more well known, famous and respected across generations of fans, consumers, and fanatics than Marvel's offerings. Still, the scales were tipping in favour of the Bat and company...
En medio de todos estos problemas históricos ligados a este film, la historia volvía a repetirse una vez más... ¿A qué me refiero? Pues, visto el éxito indudable que tuvo Marvel desarrollando enteramente todo su universo cinematográfico, DC, quiso imitar descaradamente... ¿Es esta acción nefasta o negativa? No necesariamente. El problema es que la firma responsable de Thor, Iron Man y Avengers, se tomó más de una década para ir paso a paso, tramo a tramo, peli a peli, explicando toda las historias para poder desarrollar interés colectivo, marketing y sobre todo, legados de fanáticos ansiosos de expectativas.
Así llegamos a la otra cara de la moneda. Donde DC, viendo que tenían a los héroes más icónicos del mundo de las historietas y de la cultura de este género relegarse por la competencia ¡Y con personajes muchísimo más desconocidos! Porque seamos realistas, ¿sí? Batman, La Mujer Maravilla, Aquaman y Superman, son inmensamente más conocidos, famosos y respetados a través de generaciones de seguidores, consumidores, y fanáticos que la oferta que producía Marvel.. Aún así, la balanza dejaba atrás a la firma del murciélago y compañía...

From Man of Steel to The Flash, the DC Cinematic Universe took their contribution to the genre for granted. How they did it... Stilted storylines, points of view far removed from the original reality of the comic book characters, dreadful CGI special effects, and not to mention the abuse of CGI in the films, as well as other things totally ruined the genre.
In fact, so much so that the new head of the DC Cinematic Universe himself has decided to reboot the franchise from scratch. More than 10 films released, series, and trying to emulate what the competition did splendidly. In this sense, The Flash had to tolerate all this background. The critics trashed the film (with total justice, in my opinion). Also, to form my own opinion, I saw it but on HBO Max. Funny, because it's supposed to be a film that should be in the cinema, but not even by putting it on the streaming service could they do anything for it.
Entonces, ¿qué decidieron hacer para contrarrestar esto? Pues, lo que todos hemos visto. Forzar, tanto en tiempo como en estrenos a todos sus héroes. Desde Man of Steel, hasta The Flash, el universo cinematográfico de DC daba por hecho su contribución al género ¿El problema? El cómo lo hicieron... Historias forzadas, puntos de vista alejados de la realidad original de los personajes de cómics, espantosos efectos especiales hechos con CGI; y ni hablar del abuso de esta herramienta en las películas, así como otras cosas arruinaron totalmente al género.
Tanto así fue esto que les relato, que el mismísimo nuevo encargado de este DC universo cinematográfico ha decidido reiniciar desde cero la franquicia. Más de 10 películas estrenadas, series, e intentando emular lo que la competencia hizo espléndidamente. En este sentido, The Flash tuvo que tolerar todos estos antecedentes. La crítica la destrozó (con total justicia, a mí modo de ver) a la película. Además, para formar mi propia opinión, la vi pero en HBO Max. Curioso, porque se supone que es un film que debería estar en el cine, pero ni llevándola al servicio de streamings pudieron hacer algo por ella.
It's no secret that The Flash represents the last stage of an idea that seemed excellent at first glance, but unfortunately its execution has been a total disaster. However, watching The Flash I can rescue several things. First of all, the success they had in explaining the relationship between the main character and his mother; simply good cinema. Also, this film makes a lot of homages to symbols of cinema such as "Back to the Future", "Blade Runner" or "Dune". I wish I could say something more positive, but I would be lying to you. No es un secreto que The Flash representa la última etapa de una idea que parecía excelente a primera vista, pero que desafortunadamente su ejecución ha sido un total desastre. Sin embargo, viendo The Flash puedo rescatar varias cosas. La primera, el acierto que tuvieron explicando la relación entre el protagonista y su madre; sencillamente cine del bueno. Asimismo, esta cinta hace un montón de homenajes a símbolos del cine como "Volver al Futuro", "Blade Runner" o "Dune". Ojalá pudiera decir algo más positivo, pero les mentiría. Y eso es algo que no sería prudente. Y ustedes, ¿qué opinan, qué les pareció?
