After the madness of the Oscars and all the controversy that ensued, it's time to turn the page and close the awards season with the best energy. I celebrated that another black actor won the Oscar for best actor, I am talking about Will Smith who is only the sixth black man to win in that category after 94 years of awards. Beyond the matter of the slapping of Chris Rock, it seems to me that the saddest thing is that it overshadowed what should have been a great night.
However, the important thing was that another black man was awarded and no one doubts Smith's talent. In some cases in fact the Oscar comes with the actor's least Nobel role (remember Leo DiCaprio). But, not everything is cinema. There is also other content worth recognizing. For example, everyone talks about feature films, but no one talks about lesser-known categories such as animated or non-animated short films, or documentaries. Documentaries, are a great form of entertainment, wholesome and depending on the genre may also be quite an educational experience.
I like them a lot, I grew up watching them. Whenever I can I look for what to watch, I like them of all genres. The biography type ones are very useful to me, because you never know how much you can learn from someone else's life. I love it when they portray the life of a historical figure through a summary of an hour or so. But there are all kinds, there are paranormal, historical, biographical, scientific, social and even sexual.
Netflix, for example, has a wide collection of this type of content. In the last quarter of the year I have seen several, for example, last month I saw the Tinder Scammer where a group of women are seduced by a gigolo who tricks them by pretending to be rich, to then lend them large sums of money. It was a "real life facts" type documentary that was quite interesting and pathetic at the same time.
But, I have also come across other options that I want to tell you about today and maybe even recommend. One is paranormal, one is LGBTQI+, there's also a historical one. 3 documentaries that you may not have seen, but maybe you'd like to take a look at in your spare time, so let's get started!
Después de la locura de los Oscar y toda la polémica que se armó, es hora de pasar la página y cerrar la temporada de premios con las mejores energías. Celebró que otro actor negro haya ganado el Oscar a mejor actor, les hablo de Will Smith que apenas el sexto hombre negro en ganar en dicha categoría después de 94 años de premiación. Más allá del asunto de la cachetada a Chris Rock me parece que lo más triste es que se ensombreció la que debía ser una gran noche.
Sin embargo, lo importante fue que otro negro fue premiado y nadie duda del talento de Smith. En algunos casos de hecho el Oscar llega con el papel menos nobel del actor (recordemos a Leo DiCaprio). Pero, no todo es cine. También hay otro tipo de contenido que vale la pena reconocer. Por ejemplo, todo el mundo habla de los largometrajes, pero nadie de categorías menos conocidas como los cortometrajes animados o no, o de documentales. Los documentales, son una gran forma de entretenimiento, sano y dependiendo del género puede que también sea una experiencia bastante educativa.
A mí me gustan mucho, crecí viéndolos. Siempre que puedo busco que ver, me gustan de todos los géneros. Los de tipo biografía se me hacen muy útiles, porque uno nunca sabe cuánto puede aprender de la vida de alguien más. Me encanta cuando retratan la vida de un personaje histórico a través de un resumen de una algo hora y más. Pero los hay de toda clase, existen de cuestiones paranormales, históricos, biográficos, científicos, sociales y hasta sexuales.
Netflix por ejemplos, tiene una amplia colección de este tipo de contenido. En el último trimestre del año he visto varios, por ejemplo, el mes pasado vi el Estafador de Tinder en dónde un grupo de mujeres son seducidas por un gigolo que las engaña haciéndose pasar por rico, para acto seguido prestarles grandes sumas de dinero. Fue un documental tipo "hechos de la vida real" bastante interesante y patético al mismo tiempo.
Pero, también me he topado con otras opciones de las que hoy quiero hablarles y tal vez hasta recomendarles. Uno es paranormal, otro es LGBTQI+, también hay uno histórico. 3 documentales que tal vez no hayas visto, pero que quizás te gustaría echarle un vistazo en tu tiempo libre, así que ¡comencemos!
This is actually one of my favorites. It's based on testimonials from ordinary people who have experienced some kind of paranormal activity in countries like Colombia or Mexico. It is the Latin version of the successful but unfinished show (the stories never have closure) Haunted that since 2018 Netflix has among its catalog. The Spanish version arrived in 2021, with 5 episodes one scarier than the other.
Here I was shocked by the episode of the haunted doll, although all of them have a quite interesting terrifying touch. The scenes are dramatized and the chapters go by fast since the only one that lasts an hour is the first one, the other 4 are less than 30 minutes long. Perhaps if you like "old school" horror this is not for you, although I really enjoyed the horror in my language.
La verdad que este es de mis favoritos. Se basa en testimonios de personas comunes que han experimentado algún tipo de actividad paranormal en países como Colombia o México. Es la versión latina del exitoso pero inconcluso programa (las historias nunca tienen cierre) Haunted que desde 2018 Netflix tiene entre su catálogo. La versión en español llegó en 2021, con 5 episodios uno más aterrador que el otro.
Aquí me impactó el capítulo de la muñeca embrujada, aunque todos tienen un toque aterrador bastante interesante. Las escenas son dramatizadas y los capítulos se pasan rápido ya que el único que dura una hora es el primero los 4 restantes no llegan a los 30 minutos de duración. Quizás si te gusta el terror "old school" esto no es para ti, aunque yo disfruté mucho el terror en mi idioma.
Circus of Books was a library in Los Angeles, well known for selling gay porn! And this documentary tells the story of the Masons, a typical (not so typical) Jewish family who had a fairly conventional life, but secretly owned the largest distributor of gay porn in the United States. Their business became a safe space for thousands of homosexuals, who found among books a place for love.
A very emotional story where the loss of several employees and friends due to the AIDS pandemic in the 1980s is recounted. But, above all, it is a review of the life of Karen and Barry Mason, who tell how difficult it was to accept the sexuality of their own child and how they managed to overcome prejudices by confronting society. Of course like (almost) all LGBTQI+ content on Netflix, this documentary is executive produced by Ryan Murphy. I recommend it with my eyes closed because it is a different option.
Circus of Books era una biblioteca en Los Ángeles, muy conocida por ¡vender porno gay! Y en este documental se cuenta la historia de Los Masón una típica (no tanto) familia judía quienes tenían una vida bastante convencional, pero que en secreto eran los propietarios del mayor distribuidor de porno gay de Estados Unidos. Su negocio se convirtió en un espacio seguro para miles de homosexuales, que encontraban entre libros un lugar para el amor.
Una historia bastante emotiva en dónde se relatan la perdida de varios empleados y amigos por la pandemia del Sida en la década de 1980. Pero, sobre todo es un repaso por la vida de Karen y Barry Mason quienes relatan cuán difícil fue aceptar la sexualidad de un hijo propio y como lograron derribar prejuicios enfrentando a la sociedad. Por supuesto como (casi) todo el contenido LGBTQI+ en Netflix, este documental cuenta con la producción ejecutiva de Ryan Murphy. Se los recomiendo con los ojos cerrados porque es una opción diferente.
This is absolutely my favorite. Peter Dinklage we know for his stature and for his great talent, turned into a star after Game of Throne, this time we have him lending his rather rich and masculine voice, by the way, for this historical documentary that is one of the best I've seen lately. Under the question of How to Become a Tyrant, this production focuses on the rise, evolution and fall of various regimes, dictatorships or tyrannies from all over the world.
It is delirious, satirical, educational, interesting and ingenious the way in which this manual explains what to do if you want to become a real tyrant. Starting with one of the worst, Hitler (Germany - conquering power), this documentary has 6 chapters that do not exceed half an hour. Saddam Hussein (Iraq - finish off your rivals), Idi Amin (Uganda - rule by fear), Iosif Stalin (USSR - control the truth), Muammar Al Gaddafi (Libya - create a new society) and the Kim Dynasty (North Korea - rule forever) are the protagonists of the following episodes.
A review of history, but in an enjoyable, summarized and quite entertaining way make this the best option to watch on Netflix. I recommend it to you, I know you will enjoy it if you are history lovers like me.
Este es mi favorito. A Peter Dinklage lo conocemos por su estatura y por su gran talento, convertido en una estrella después de Game of Throne, esta vez lo tenemos prestando su voz bastante rica y masculina, por cierto, para este documental histórico que es uno de los mejores que he visto últimamente. Bajo la pregunta de ¿Cómo convertirse en un tirano?, esta producción se centra en el ascenso, evolución y caída de varios regímenes, dictaduras o tiranías de todas partes del mundo.
Es delirante, satírico, educativo, interesante e ingeniosa la manera en cómo se nos presenta este manual que te explica que hacer si te quieres convertir en un verdadero tirano. Comenzando con uno de los peores, Hitler (Alemania- conquistar el poder) este documental cuenta con 6 capítulos que no pasan de la media hora. Sadam Husiein (Irak - acabar con tus rivales), Idi Amin (Uganda - Gobernar mediante el miedo), Iosif Stalin (URSS - controlar la verdad), Muamar Al Gadafi (Libia - crear una sociedad nueva) y la Dinastía Kim (Corea del Norte - Gobernar para siempre) son los protagonistas de los siguientes episodios.
Un repaso por la historia, pero en una manera amena, resumida y bastante entretenida hacen que está sea la mejor opción para ver en Netflix. Se los recomiendo sé que lo disfrutarán si son amantes de la historia como yo.
