The Power of the Dog. 2021

Hello to all movie and TV fans in this opportunity I am going to give you my commentary about Jane Campion's Australian movie The Power of the Dog, this movie is based on the book by Thomas Savage. This story stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons in the roles of Phil and George Burbank, as well as the performances of Kirsten Dunst as Rose and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Peter. They give life to a complex story where the intimacy of each of them takes us to a dreamlike world in the innermost being offering the viewer the secrets that torment these characters.

The beautiful music, each melody majestically unites with the dialogues and the landscape, as I have already told you in other articles I am a great admirer of symbols and sensory elements that awaken the senses of the viewer and put him inside the story until he feels what the character transmits and this is achieved in this film especially in the scenes of Phil and Peter. Beyond telling us a story that is a little beyond the conventional western, this film is not for those who want to see a traditional cowboy movie, on the contrary, if you are looking for that, you will be a little disappointed.

The Power of the Dog focuses on a country that is moving from a purely rural life to a process of modernization, it takes place in 1925 when there were already some advances in the United States and other countries such as the vehicle and some industries, it also tells us about the men who were on the one hand anchored to the old ways and did not accept modernization as in the case of Phil, What is additional striking about this character is that he is an educated man who was trained at a university and has the tools to be a gentleman example of modernity and on the contrary he is stuck in his past on the ranch in a life that he does not want to change. His counterpart, his brother George, has refined himself by completely changing his lifestyle, which includes marriage to the town widow, Rose, who has an effeminate son, Peter.

Peter is a refined young man, extremely protected by his mother because of his behavior and sexual inclination which at the time was punished and not accepted. The script is not simple, the dialogues are few but deep something that I really consider wonderful because the rest is developed in our senses through the beautiful photography, the music and the spectacular locations of New Zealand where the movie was filmed.

Basically I liked the movie although I must confess that the ending seemed a bit unfinished for such a good development, I think many of us were waiting for something more. It is a good script, excellent adaptation and characterizations of these actors that we will rarely see again on the big screen.
