Hoy les vine a hablar acerca de una película de crimen y gánsteres, pero no es otra más del montón de este ya inundado estilo filmográfico, claro que no ¿y qué es lo que le hace diferente? Pues, que fue realizada por el maestro cineasta experto en la metería, el Gran Martin Scorsese. Scorsese que como dije, es muy reconocido en cuanto a películas de mafia y gánsteres se refiere, vino construyendo esta historia desde hace años, esta historia se basa en el libro bibliográfico “I Heard You Paint Houses” y el titulo para el film fue “The Irishman”, el cual nos narra la historia de Frank Sheeran, un camionero que se convierte en un mafioso que trabaja para una familia criminal y que luego haría trabajos para el teamster Jimmy Hoffa. Además de contar con un Director especializado en la materia, también trabajó con un repertorio de actores que a través de los años se han vuelto “clásicos” en este tipo de películas, hablo de Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Al Pacino, Ray Romano, entre otros. La película se estreno en Noviembre de 2019.

Como dije, la película se basa en la obra de no ficción narrativa titulada: “I Heard You Paint Houses” (“Escuché que pintas casas” en español) que nos relata la vida de Frank Sheeran, un criminal perteneciente a una familia de gánsteres, en el libro están las confesiones de los crimenes Sheeran cuando trabaja para ellos, también el libro nos narra sobre la desaparición del Teamster Jimmy Hoffa. El nombre del libro representa un código de la mafia para referirse a la sangre de las victimas en las paredes al realizar asesinatos.
Al ver la película quedé totalmente fascinado y no tarde en hacerme interrogantes como ¿lo que vi acerca de estos crímenes y confesiones son reales? y de ser reales ¿Cómo hizo el autor del libro para obtenerlas? Fue entonces cuando me involucré en una investigación para obtener respuestas y pude descubrir que Charles Brandt, autor del libro, recibió una llamada de alguien perteneciente al circula de la mafia pidiéndole que ayudara la liberación de Frank Sheeran, el cual se encontraba pagando una sentencia de 33 años en prisión por el delitos de extorsión, una sentencia que consideraban exagerada, ya que se fundamentaban en que normalmente por este tipo de delito solo dan 5 años de condena, la mafia quería que Brandt lo sacara de la cárcel bajo libertad medica condicional. Una vez que consiguieron liberarlo, Frank Sheeran y Charles Brandt se reunieron, este le manifestó quería que escribiera su historia, estaba harto de que el FBI lo interrogara, quería liberal todo eso que lo oprimía en su interior y eliminar ese fantasma que lo perseguía por la desaparición de Hoffa. En 2009 De Niro, Scorsese y Steven Zaillian (Quien seria guionista de la película) se reunieron con el autor Charles Brandt para hablar al respecto. La filmación inició en 2017.
Con respecto al reparto, es una historia interesante porque Scorsese estaba empeñado en que Joe Pesci interpretara el papel de Russell Bufalino, pero este se negó en múltiples ocasiones ya que estaba considerando el retiro, pero Scorsese nunca se rindió e insistió tanto que terminó sacando a Pesci del retiro. Otra cosa a destacar es que es la primera vez que Scorsese trabaja con Al Pacino, El Director expresó que anhelaba desde hace muchos años trabajar junto a él, pero que debido a la fama que Pacino adquirió cuando trabajó en “The Goodfather” le hizo inalcanzable.

Creo que hicieron un gran trabajo en la adaptación, la vedad es que la historia de estos gánsteres es fascinante para todo amante del género. Muy bien trabajo de Charles Brandt a la hora de relatarnos la historia de Sheeran mediante su libro, y en cuanto a Martin Scorsese, con la ayuda de Steven Zaillian en el guion, la adaptación al cine fue prodigiosa, creo que solo él podía hacer que quedara tan bien. Es una película que aunque dura más de 3 horas, es muy entretenida y en ningún momento desentona, se convirtió en una de mis favoritas, pero es imposible hablar de la película sin mencionar a Charles Brandt y a su “I Heard You Paint Houses” que junto al cineasta nos mostraron cosas interesantes, como la manera en que Jimmy Hoffa desenvolvió un papel importante en la sociedad política de la época, además su relación con la mafia nos muestra ese lado oscuro de la sociedad y la política, como el sistema en el que vivimos está repleto de corrupciones, dinero sucio, violencia y abusos, y aun así todo está como si nada, es como si el sistema se alimentara de todo esto. Pero también nos muestra que la vida de los criminales no es ideal, tienen diversos obstáculos que hacen que su vida nunca sea feliz, además podemos percibir que la única forma de salir de ese mundo es muerto.

It is a film that, although it lasts more than 3 hours, is very entertaining and at no time is out of tune, it became one of my favorites, but it is impossible to talk about the film without mentioning Charles Brandt and his “I Heard You Paint Houses” that Together with the filmmaker, they showed us interesting things, such as the way in which Jimmy Hoffa played an important role in the political society of the time, in addition, his relationship with the mafia shows us that dark side of society and politics, like the system in which that we live in is full of corruption, dirty money, violence and abuse, and yet everything is as if nothing, it is as if the system feeds on all this. But it also shows us that the life of criminals is not ideal, they have various obstacles that make their life never happy, we can also perceive that the only way out of that world is dead.
