I've mentioned many times in the past that I love movies and series with period content. For some reason I've always been drawn to this kind of content in any format, and so I'm constantly looking for more and more things to watch or read😅
That's how I got The Buccaneers. Quite an interesting series; I won't say it's original or very historically instructive about the era, because it's not, but it's a good choice to entertain you and pass the time, with chapters that keep you tense and interested with all its torrent of drama and romance.
Ya he mencionado muchas veces en el pasado que me encantan las películas y series con un contenido de época. Por alguna razón siempre me he sentido atraída por esta clase de contenido en cualquier formato, y por eso estoy constantemente buscando más y más cosas por ver o leer😅
Así fue como conseguí The Buccaneers. Una serie bastante interesante; no diré que es original o muy instructiva históricamente sobre la época, porque no lo es, pero sí es una buena opción para entretenerte y pasar el rato, con capítulos que te mantienen tenso e interesado con toda su torrente de drama y romance.
This story is based on Edith Wharton's 1938 literary work. A curious fact I read —and it is worth sharing— is that the writer died before finishing the novel, but the manuscript was still published. What a frustration for those readers! However, some time later, the writer Marion Mainwaring appeared, who finished building the story, continuing with Wharton's narrative and details, and this version was finally published in 1993.
Mainwaring was harshly criticized for completing the idea of that manuscript, which seemed to be highly revered by literary critics of the time. Nevertheless, she remained steadfast and satisfied with her work. And it is a detail that caught my attention because of its similarity to the story told in the novel. The Buccaneers is set in the 1870's, where it clearly highlights the criticism and social pressure towards women, especially the young women in this story who break out of the established “socio-cultural role”, generating several frictions with American and European society. For this reason I find significant the struggle of Marion Mainwaring for her work, who even in a year closer to our present time, was also harassed for her «daring».
No matter what era we are in, there are always characters who want to repress the freedom of others.

Un dato curioso que leí —y vale la pena compartir— es que la escritora falleció antes de terminar la novela, pero aun así se publicó el manuscrito. ¡Qué frustración para esos lectores! Sin embargo, un tiempo después apareció la escritora Marion Mainwaring, que terminó de construir la historia, continuando con la narrativa y detalles de Wharton, siendo finalmente publicada esta versión en 1993.
Mainwaring fue duramente criticada por completar la idea de ese manuscrito, que parecía ser muy venerado por los críticos literarios de la época. The Buccaneers está ambientada en la época de 1870, donde claramente resalta la crítica y presión social hacia la mujer, especialmente a las jóvenes de esta historia que salen del "rol socio-cultural" establecido, generándoles varios roces con la sociedad americana y europea. Por este motivo me parece significativa la lucha de Marion Mainwaring por su trabajo, que incluso en un año más cercano a nuestra actualidad, también fue hostigada por su «osadía».

I mentioned that the protagonists of this novel had conflicts both in our American continent and, on the other side of the pond, on the European continent, and I will explain a summary of the plot. The Buccaneers: Aristocrats for Love, is centered on the lives of five young American friends. Annabel (Nan) St. George and her younger sister Virginia (Jinny), the Elmsworth sisters: Mabel and Lizzy, and also Conchita Closson.
When Conchita marries a British Lord, she invites her best friends to travel from New York to London, so that the younger Jinny and Lizzy can participate in the debutante season and be introduced to high society. But England was not ready for this little American invasion. The motive behind this trip is quite obvious, wealthy young ladies in search of a worthy husband. If there is one thing all these period stories have in common, it is that they present that the great dream of most young ladies is marriage.
But not everything is like Bridgerton or Pride and Prejudice, they did not always find a dream prince or, at least, a decent man. Not all engagements were for love. And it even leads you to debate whether in those societies there really was a decent concept of «love».

That is a detail I appreciate about the series. These «buccaneers» did dream of marriage, an attractive and titled man, finding love, but they never wanted to leave behind their freedom, autonomy, and the desire to enjoy their interests. And no one can ever blame a young woman for that. Whether in that era or today, our traditional environment seeks to mold us into the role that women are pawns in a man's game, and that we must wait for the player's decision to move. But the message that these female characters offer is to value your essence and have the courage to go out and accomplish your goals, or, on the contrary, you will lose yourself.
So we're going to see dreamy, hopeless romantic, cheerful, fun-loving girls. And they will be condemned for it.
Ese es un detalle que aprecio de la serie. Estas «bucaneras» sí soñaban con el matrimonio, un hombre atractivo y con título, con encontrar en el amor, pero jamás quisieron dejar atrás su libertad, autonomía, y el deseo de disfrutar sus intereses. Y nadie jamás puede culpar a una joven por eso. Sea en esa época o en la actualidad, nuestro entorno tradicional busca moldearnos al rol de que las mujeres somos peones en el juego de un hombre, y que debemos esperar la decisión del jugador para movernos. Pero el mensaje que ofrecen estos personajes femeninos es que valores tu esencia y tengas el coraje de salir a cumplir tus metas, o, por el contrario, te vas a perder a ti misma.
Así que vamos a ver a chicas soñadoras, románticas empedernidas, alegres y divertidas. Y serán condenadas por ello.
The story focuses mainly on Nan, a smart and very genuine girl, she easily wins the heart of the viewer and also of two certain gentlemen, forming a sad love triangle. I say “sad” because both men seem wonderful to me, they have their obvious red flags, but in this series there are obnoxious men, so you notice the goodness in those two. I won't give spoilers, but one thing that stands out about these loves is that: you don't have to manipulate the situation to make someone love you, who really loves you, will do it despite anything.
And one striking detail about these stories is how easy the whole marriage process looks. You meet someone one day, you have chemistry, you feel interest in him or her, and within weeks they get engaged😅 It can make you question about many things, is love really that simple? As time goes by, have we complicated the situation? Maybe yes, maybe no.
Taking the time to get to know someone can make you deepen and concretize your feelings before you reach a commitment, but maybe it can also give you time to get confused and ruin everything. Both scenarios can be seen in this triangle, and in the end you are left wondering: is there really a formula for love? Although, there is no denying how easy it was for these people to fall in love, be vulnerable and go straight to what they wanted.
La historia se centra principalmente en Nan, una chica inteligente y muy genuina, de manera fácil se gana el corazón del espectador y también de dos ciertos caballeros, formando un triste triángulo amoroso. Digo "triste" porque ambos hombres me parecen maravillosos, tienen sus obvias red flags, pero en esta serie hay hombres detestables, así que se nota la bondad en esos dos. No daré spoilers, pero algo que sobresale de estos amores es que: no hay que manipular la situación para que alguien te ame, quien realmente te ame, lo hará a pesar de cualquier cosa
Y un detalle que llama la atención de estas historias es lo fácil que luce todo el proceso matrimonial. Conoces a alguien un día, tienen química, sientes interés por él o ella, y a las semanas se comprometen😅 Te puede hacer cuestionar acerca de muchas cosas, ¿el amor es realmente así de sencillo? ¿Con el pasar del tiempo hemos complicado la situación? Puede que sí, puede que no.
Tomarte el tiempo de conocer a alguien puede hacer que profundices y concretes tus sentimientos antes de llegar a un compromiso, pero quizás también puede darte tiempo para confundirte y arruinar todo. Ambos escenarios lo podemos percibir en ese triángulo, y a final te queda pensando: ¿realmente existe una fórmula para amar? Aunque no se puede negar la facilidad que tenían esas personas para enamorarse, ser vulnerables y e ir directamente a lo que deseaban.
Although Nan's character seems to have more screen time, the truth is that the other four young women do not go unnoticed. Everyone will connect more with one than the other. Personally, I admire and love the character of Lizzy Elmsworth🌸 In only eight chapters she had a good character development, she started as a reserved girl, a bit fearful, who ended up entangled in a despicable situation because of the guilt of a disgusting man. It was a very big trauma for any woman. She was humiliated and disgraced. Out of shame she moves away from her loved ones, it was also her defense mechanism.
But life is hard, and it puts you in bad situations repeatedly so that you learn your lesson, so that you move forward. And she did. It was complicated, it took her time and space, but in the end we were shown a strong and determined Lizzy, she was still healing her wounds, she still has lessons to learn, but her way of reacting generated admiration for me, and I long for a second season to know more about her.
Aunque parece que el personaje de Nan tiene mayor tiempo de pantalla, la verdad es que las otras cuatro jóvenes no pasan desapercibidas. Cada quien conectará más con una que con otra. Personalmente, admiro y me encanta el personaje de Lizzy Elmsworth🌸 En solo ocho capítulos tuvo un buen desarrollo de personaje, ella comenzó como una chica reservada, un poco temerosa, que terminó enredada en una situación despreciable por la culpa de un hombre repugnante. Fue un trauma muy grande para cualquier mujer. Fue humillada y deshonrada. Por vergüenza se aleja de sus seres queridos, también fue su mecanismo de defensa.
Pero la vida es dura, y te coloca en malas situaciones de forma repetida para que aprendas la lección, para que avances. Y ella lo hizo. Fue complicado, le tomó su tiempo y espacio, pero al final nos mostraron una Lizzy fuerte y determinada, aún estaba sanando sus heridas, aún tiene lecciones por aprender, pero su manera de reaccionar me generó admiración, y anhelo una segunda temporada para saber más sobre ella.
Conchita, Jinny and Mabel go through different situations, one of them in a very complicated context, but all three leave us with a similar teaching: in life we must make sacrifices to achieve what we want so much✨ We cannot stay in an uncomfortable comfort because we are afraid of the unknown, it is preferable to go out, fail and venture, than to never move forward. And that during that adventure we do not give the power to someone to turn off our light.
Romance is present in every chapter, but there is something more important here, friendship. That brotherhood, that bond, those people we choose as our family, are sometimes more meaningful than a couple. Therefore, if you have a relationship where your partner seeks to take you away from your loved ones, it should be a warning sign. And here we can appreciate that theme very well, I liked the way the direction of the series developed the violence and emotional manipulation. It's not just the act of hitting or saying a few humiliating words, you have to take into account the whole context that triggers that violence. The way it starts from a small spark to a devastating fire.
Conchita, Jinny y Mabel atraviesan situaciones diferentes, una de ellas en un contexto muy complicado, pero las tres nos dejan una enseñanza similar: en la vida debemos hacer sacrificios para lograr lo que tanto deseamos✨ No podemos quedarnos en una comodidad incómoda por el hecho de tener miedo a lo desconocido, es preferible salir, fallar y aventurarse, que nunca avanzar. Y que durante esa aventura no le demos el poder a alguien de apagar nuestra luz.
El romance está presente en cada capítulo, pero hay algo más importante acá la amistad. Esa hermandad, ese vínculo, esas personas que nosotros escogemos como nuestra familia, a veces son más significativas que una pareja. Por ende, si tienes una relación en donde tu pareja busca alejarte de tus seres queridos, debe ser una señal de alarma. Y aquí podemos apreciar muy bien ese tema, me gustó la manera en que la dirección de la serie desarrollaron la violencia y manipulación emocional. No es solo el acto de golpear o decir unas palabras humillantes, hay que tomar en cuenta todo el contexto que desencadena esa violencia. La manera en que comienza desde una pequeña chispa hasta convertirse en un incendio devastador.
Like other series and movies, there are beautiful sceneries and divine costumes. It has a good production, the scenes feel natural, not overacted; the vision of its director was very accurate, she respected the timeline of the period, and the true meaning of feminism. Probably, something that helped to win my heart was that in the first chapter played the song Nothing New and in the last chapter Long Live, both songs by Taylor Swift🌸
It has very significant details at the production level, but when making this review, I was more inclined to mention the message that this story left in me🩷
Al igual que otras serie y películas, hay escenarios hermosos y vestuarios divinos. Tiene una buena producción, las escenas se sienten natural, no sobreactuado; la visión de su directora fue muy acertada, respetó la línea temporal de la época y el verdadero significado del feminismo. It is romantic, ideal for falling in love a little, but it is not based on the development of a love story. We don't see an ideal romantic love intensifying into a happy marriage. Here the characters are deeper, they are more complex and realistic stories; it doesn't make you idealize, but it allows you to understand the complexity that we people give to our relationships✨
Es romántica, ideal para enamorarse un poco, pero no se basa en el desarrollo de una historia de amor. No vemos un amor romántico e ideal intensificarse hasta llegar a un matrimonio feliz.
