The thing that differentiates Marvel the most from DC Comics, is that Marvel adopted a happy and comedic tones for their live-action productions, whereas DC adopted a much more serious, dark, and sometimes even sinister tone. It was clear to me Morbius wasn’t going to be a regular Marvel story, and I knew I had to find the time to give this film a watch.
As is usually the case, before watching this film I didn’t see any trailer or read anything about the story so I went in without knowing anything about the events that will take place and hoping for the story to be intriguing and entertaining. I didn’t even know if Morbius was a villain or a hero, and I was interested in seeing how this character came to terms with his strange condition. I prefer to approach new movies like this in order to not discover a potential spoiler by accident and enjoy all the surprises the film has to give.
One of the things I liked the most about this film is that it shows some scenes that took place a couple of decades in the past, that allows us to understand the psychological development of the main character. His longings, frustrations, desires, and fears.
We quickly realize this person is extremely intelligent, he can almost be considered a genius, but he has this medical condition that has been very limiting his entire life.
This is why he dedicated most of his professional life to finding solutions to diseases related to our blood. He is willing to do anything to advance his knowledge about this medical topic, he is even willing to risk his own humanity in order to explore scientific frontiers never crossed by anyone else before. He disregards almost anything about morality in his investigations due to his uncontrollable obsession with finding some type of innovative cure.
Lo que más diferencia a Marvel de DC Comics, es que Marvel adoptó un tono alegre y cómico para sus producciones de acción en vivo, mientras que DC adoptó un tono mucho más serio, oscuro y a veces incluso siniestro. Estaba claro para mí que Morbius no iba a ser una historia regular de Marvel, y sabía que tenía que encontrar el tiempo para darle un vistazo a esta película.
Como suele ser el caso, antes de ver esta película no vi ningún tráiler, ni leí nada sobre la historia, así que entré sin saber nada sobre los eventos que tendrán lugar y esperando que la historia fuera intrigante y entretenida. Ni siquiera sabía si Morbius era un villano o un héroe, y me interesaba ver cómo este personaje llegaba a un acuerdo con su extraña condición. Prefiero abordar a nuevas películas de esta forma para no descubrir un potencial spoiler por accidente y disfrutar de todas las sorpresas que la película tiene para dar.
Una de las cosas que más me ha gustado de esta película es que muestra algunas escenas que tuvieron lugar un par de décadas en el pasado, que nos permiten entender el desarrollo psicológico del personaje principal. Sus anhelos, frustraciones, deseos y temores.
Rápidamente nos damos cuenta de que esta persona es extremadamente inteligente, casi puede considerarse un genio, pero tiene esta condición médica que ha sido muy limitante toda su vida.
Es por ello que dedicó la mayor parte de su vida profesional a buscar soluciones a enfermedades relacionadas con nuestra sangre. Está dispuesto a hacer cualquier cosa para avanzar en su conocimiento sobre este tema médico, incluso está dispuesto a arriesgar su propia humanidad para explorar fronteras científicas nunca antes cruzadas por nadie antes. Ignora casi cualquier cosa sobre la moralidad en sus investigaciones debido a su obsesión incontrolable por encontrar algún tipo de cura innovadora.
Nowhere in the movie, it is ever explained these bats are somehow special. Except for the fact they drink blood, they are like just any other mammal when it comes to their strength and their speed. This is why it was puzzling for me to see the main character somehow obtaining these superhero powers. I mean, I would understand if he developed a thirst for blood, but how did he get super strong and fast? That didn't make sense. The only explanation I could think of was that he ended up causing a crazy mutation in his body while experimenting with himself, but this wasn't mentioned in the film.
Soon enough, the main character realizes that his apparent solution to his sickness isn't really a solution but a freaking curse he cannot even control. He has become a different thing, he isn't human any longer and his behavior inevitably begins to turn more animalistic as time goes on.
He has lost his way, and he doesn't seem to be able to find a solution for all this mess he managed to get himself into with all his exotic investigations and crazy experiments. He is pretty much at a dead end.
Something that didn't make sense was the naturality with which the detectives interacted with Morbius as if this was a regular thing to do and this person was just another criminal like many others. They should have been absolutely creeped out but they were just fine with dealing with a person with superhuman strength. It was absurd to see a couple of detectives with this attitude and made the entire film much less convincing.
Another thing I didn't like was that the vampires left some type of floating aura when doing special moves, and I don't remember any other superhero leaving this type of aura when moving. There was nothing that could justify that type of floating aura and it seemed to me the creators only wanted to show off what they thought were cool special effects but in my opinion, it was too much and a bit ridiculous.
En ninguna parte de la película se explica que estos murciélagos sean de alguna manera especiales. Excepto por el hecho de que beben sangre, son como cualquier otro mamífero cuando se trata de su fuerza y su velocidad. Es por eso que fue desconcertante para mí ver al personaje principal de alguna manera obteniendo estos poderes de superhéroe. Quiero decir, entendería si desarrollara sed de sangre, pero ¿cómo se volvió súper fuerte y rápido? Eso no tenía sentido. La única explicación que se me ocurrió fue que terminó causando una mutación loca en su cuerpo mientras experimentaba consigo mismo, pero esto no se mencionó en la película.
Muy pronto, el personaje principal se da cuenta de que su aparente solución a su enfermedad no es realmente una solución, sino una maldición monstruosa que ni siquiera puede controlar. Se ha convertido en una cosa diferente, ya no es humano y su comportamiento inevitablemente comienza a volverse más animalístico a medida que pasa el tiempo.
Ha perdido el rumbo, y no parece ser capaz de encontrar una solución para todo este lío en el que logró meterse con todas sus investigaciones exóticas y experimentos locos. Está prácticamente en un callejón sin salida.
Algo que no tenía sentido era la naturalidad con la que los detectives interactuaban con Morbius como si esto fuera algo normal y esta persona fuera solo otro criminal como muchos otros. Deberían haber estado absolutamente asustados, pero les parecía normal tratar con una persona con fuerza súper humana. Era absurdo ver a un par de detectives con esta actitud e hizo que toda la película fuera mucho menos convincente.
Otra cosa que no me gustó fue que el vampiro debaja algún tipo de aura flotante al hacer movimientos especiales, y no recuerdo que ningún otro superhéroe dejara este tipo de aura al moverse. No había nada que pudiera justificar ese tipo de aura flotante y me pareció que los creadores solo querían mostrar lo que pensaban que eran efectos especiales geniales, pero en mi opinión, fue demasiado y un poco ridículo.
Morbius eventually proves that despite his desperation and obsession he realizes that causing harm, and even risking other people's safety isn't something acceptable, he will have to finish the chaos he caused no matter what. His new main goal quickly changes to stop the craziness that he unleashed and that could become much bigger if he doesn't act as quick as possible.
The fight scenes weren't really impressive, and the trick used by Morbius to gain an advantage over his rival should have been neutralized by his opponent somehow. Many parts of this film were extremely generic, it felt as if they were following a manual instead of trying to make something unique.
Plus, there was also a huge inconsistency in the ending's writing. He was supposed to take a very important decision regarding his circumstances but somehow, he seemed to have forgotten about it after the big fight. This was ridiculous and it makes me wonder if the people in charge of the story were actually taking this film seriously. Apparently, they weren't. They would have to either change a previous dialogue where he mentions this personal decision or change the ending, but this inconsistency was a serious mistake that cannot be justifiable and makes this film one of the weakest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Final thoughts
The film was surely very different from what Marvel has produced so far. This film doesn’t have many jokes constantly being added into the script although there was a weird and inexplicable Venom line during one scene which was confusing because I thought they added it as a sort of joke? Regardless of the intention of adding that line, it felt very out of place and didn't make sense. The general feeling of dread surrounding the main character was obvious from the beginning. This was an interesting change but the movie lacked enough substance to be properly enjoyed.
There were some enjoyable parts simply because it was different and because the change of tone was somehow refreshing, but it also felt like there wasn't enough creative effort in making a compelling story. The writing was so basic and that saddens me because this character could actually be one of the most badass out there but in the end, it felt very insipid.
It would be understandable for many Marvel fans to dislike this because the character has a lot of potential that so far has been wasted. The good thing is that this character will most likely appear in future Marvel productions and there will be another opportunity to make a better story involving him.
Morbius finalmente demuestra que a pesar de su desesperación y obsesión, se da cuenta de que causar daño, e incluso arriesgar la seguridad de otras personas no es algo aceptable, tendrá que terminar con el caos que causó pase lo que pase. Su nuevo objetivo principal cambia rápidamente para detener la locura que desató y que podría hacerse mucho más grande si no actúa lo más rápido posible.
Las escenas de lucha no fueron realmente impresionantes, y el truco utilizado por Morbius para obtener una ventaja sobre su rival debería haber sido neutralizado por su oponente de alguna manera. Muchas partes de esta película eran extremadamente genéricas, se sentía como si estuvieran siguiendo un manual en lugar de tratar de hacer algo único.
Además, también hubo una gran inconsistencia en la escritura del final. Se suponía que debía tomar una decisión muy importante con respecto a sus circunstancias, pero de alguna manera, pareció haberse olvidado de ello después de la gran pelea. Esto fue ridículo y me hace preguntarme si las personas a cargo de la historia realmente estaban tomando esta película en serio. Aparentemente, no fue así. Tendrían que cambiar un diálogo anterior donde menciona esta decisión personal o cambiar el final, pero esta inconsistencia fue un grave error que no puede justificarse y hace de esta película una de las más débiles del Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel.
Reflexiones finales
La película seguramente fue muy diferente a lo que Marvel ha producido hasta ahora. Esta película no tiene muchos chistes que se agregan constantemente al guión, aunque hubo una línea de Venom extraña e inexplicable durante una escena que fue confusa porque pensé que la agregaron como una especie de broma. Independientemente de la intención de agregar esa línea, se sentía muy fuera de lugar y no tenía sentido. La sensación general de oscuridad que rodea al personaje principal fue obvia desde el principio. Este fue un cambio interesante, pero la película carecía de suficiente sustancia para ser disfrutada adecuadamente.
Hubo algunas partes disfrutables simplemente porque era diferente y porque el cambio de tono fue de alguna manera refrescante, pero también se sintió como si no hubiera suficiente esfuerzo creativo para hacer una historia convincente. La escritura fue muy básica y eso me entristece porque este personaje podría ser uno de los más únicos que existen, pero al final se sintió muy insípido todo.
Sería comprensible que a muchos fanáticos de Marvel no les guste esto porque el personaje tiene mucho potencial que hasta ahora se ha desperdiciado. Lo bueno es que lo más probable es que este personaje aparezca en futuras producciones de Marvel y habrá otra oportunidad de hacer una mejor historia que lo involucre.
