A few months ago I was at a friend's house when she told me about a mini series that I had never seen. I hadn't even heard of it, in fact, so to correct my ignorance we decided to see it then and there. Less than an hour later I found myself thinking about a lot of things and feeling more because the story managed to move me. I liked the series to such an extent that I watched it again last night.
Hace algunos meses estaba en casa de una amiga cuando me habló de una mini serie que yo nunca había visto. Ni siquiera había oído de ella, de hecho, así que para corregir mi ignorancia decidimos verla en ese momento. Menos de una hora más tarde me encontré pensando sobre un montón de cosas y sintiendo otras más porque la historia logró conmoverme. A tal punto me gustó la serie que anoche la vi de nuevo.
The Beauty Inside is a romantic mini series made in collaboration with Toshiba and Intel and directed by Drake Doremus. If that name sounds familiar to you, it's probably because of the movie Like Crazy, a drama that won the Jury Prize at the Sundance Festival, starring Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin, which features a young woman named Jennifer Lawrence (if you don't remember it, maybe you have to see it again) and in which we are told a story that is as romantic as it is dramatic, volatile and intense. Now, The Beauty Inside is a shorter, calmer and, if you will, more beautiful and deeply philosophical story. Let's see, who among us hasn't ever wanted to be someone different or at least look different? Surely, many of us have at some point wanted to be taller, more handsome, have different hair, dress differently, have some talent or at least be able to experience - even for a brief period - what it would feel like to be in another skin. Well, that's precisely what happens to Alex, the protagonist of the series, except that it happens every day and he can't help it: every day he wakes up looking like a different person. Sometimes he wakes up as a man, sometimes as a woman, or as an old man, or a child, white, Latino, fat, short, tall, bald, mute... his avatar for the next 24 hours is completely random. But inside he's always the same.
The Beauty Inside es una mini serie romántica realizada con la colaboración de Toshiba y de Intel y dirigida por Drake Doremus. Si ese nombre les suena de algo, probablemente sea por la película Like Crazy, un drama que obtuvo el Premio del Jurado en el Festival de Sundance, que está protagonizado por Felicity Jones y Anton Yelchin, en donde aparece una joven llamada Jennifer Lawrence (si no lo recuerdan, tal vez tengan que volverla a ver) y en la que se nos cuenta una historia tan romántica como dramática, volátil e intensa. Ahora bien, The Beauty Inside es una historia más breve, más calmada y si se quiere más bonita y profundamente filosófica. A ver, ¿quién de nosotros no ha querido alguna vez ser alguien diferente o al menos verse diferente? Con seguridad, muchos de nosotros hemos querido alguna vez ser más altos, más apuestos, tener el cabello diferente, vestir diferente, tener algún talento o al menos poder experimentar - aunque sea por un breve lapso - cómo se sentiría estar en otra piel. Pues eso es precisamente lo que le pasa a Alex, el protagonista de la serie, sólo que le ocurre a diario y no puede evitarlo: todos los días despierta luciendo como una persona diferente. A veces despierta como hombre, a veces como mujer, o como anciano, o niño, blanco, latino, gordo, bajito, alto, calvo, mudo... su avatar para las siguientes 24 horas es completamente aleatorio. Pero por dentro siempre es el mismo.
From the start there's already a questioning of identity, what makes us who we are? Does our appearance matter or influence our essence? It has always been said that what matters is what is on the inside, but Alex himself recognizes that being attractive opens many doors because who can make a good first impression just with feelings that no one can see?
De partida ya hay un cuestionamiento de la identidad, ¿qué es lo que nos hace ser quién somos? ¿nuestra apariencia importa o influye en nuestra esencia? Siempre se ha dicho que lo que importa es lo que hay por dentro, pero el propio Alex reconoce que ser atractivo abre muchas puertas porque ¿quién puede causar una buena primera impresión sólo con unos sentimentos que nadie puede ver?
Then we have the issue of Alex's position being both a fortune and a tragedy. On one hand, he can experience what it feels like to be a bunch of different people in the same society, which in the long run can help him develop greater empathy for any human being because, so to speak, he has already been in the shoes of many. It can also be fun and liberating to experiment oneself in different bodies and live life one day at a time, take advantage of today and know that if you don't like something about your appearance you just have to put up with it for a day. But on the other hand, it's more difficult for Alex to recognize himself with any image of his body, a body that, as it changes daily, he has learned to take advantage of and endure, but perhaps not to love. If love is what lasts, can you love what is ephemeral? Is there love in transience? The saddest thing of all is that Alex is a person condemned to loneliness, how can he explain to someone what is happening to him? How can he asks another to stay, to be the permanent when he himself represents the change (physical at least)? With a system of rules that he has created for himself and that he has fully complied with, Alex has managed to lead a life that is quite satisfactory for him, until he meets the gaze of Lia (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and falls madly in love with her.
Luego tenemos el tema de que la posición de Alex es tanto una fortuna como una tragedia. Por un lado, puede experimentar lo que se siente ser un montón de personas diferentes en medio de la misma sociedad, lo que a la larga le puede ayudar a desarrollar mayor empatía por cualquier ser humano porque, por ponerlo de algún modo, él ya ha estado en los zapatos de muchos. Además puede ser divertido y liberador experimentarse en diferentes cuerpos y vivir la vida un día a la vez, aprovechar el hoy y saber que si algo no le gusta de su apariencia tan sólo tiene que soportarlo durante un día. Pero por otro lado, a Alex se le hace más difícil reconocerse con alguna imagen de su cuerpo, un cuerpo que como cambia a diario ha aprendido a aprovechar y a soportar, pero quizás no a amar. Si el amor es lo duradero, ¿se puede amar lo efímero? ¿hay amor en la fugacidad? Lo más triste de todo es que Alex es una persona condenada a la soledad, ¿cómo explicarle a alguien lo que le ocurre? ¿cómo pedirle a otro que se quede, que sea lo permanente cuando él mismo representa el cambio (físico al menos)? Con un sistema de reglas que él mismo se ha creado y que ha cumplido cabalmente, Alex ha logrado llevar una vida bastante satisfactoria para él, hasta que se topa con la mirada de Lia (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) y se enamora perdidamente de ella.
What to do? how to conquer her? Alex can go to the antique store where Lia works and see her every day, but he would have to show up again and again because she wouldn't remember him for the simple reason that every time she sees him it will be the first time she's ever seen him with that face. The center of the plot could not be more dramatic. We have a man who falls in love with a woman to whom he wants to give everything he is, but in a case like his, is it what is inside that really matters? How to fall in love with someone who can look like a different person every day?
¿Qué hacer? ¿cómo conquistarla? Alex puede ir a la tienda de antigüedades en la que trabaja Lia y verla todos los días, pero tendría que presentarse nuevamente una y otra vez porque ella no lo recordaría por la simple razón de que cada vez que lo vea será la primera vez que lo vea con ese rostro. El centro de la trama no puede ser más dramático. Tenemos a un hombre que se enamora de una mujer a quien quiere entregarle todo cuanto es, pero en un caso como el suyo ¿es lo de adentro lo que realmente importa? ¿cómo enamorarse de alguien que cada día puede lucir como una persona diferente?
The premise of The Beauty Inside is a mix of love and fantasy, but those elements serve as drivers of quite interesting and, I would say, necessary reflections. In a world that seems to be governed by appearances, likes, the price of things, the measurements of a perfect body, a stereotype - in short, by everything superfluous - how many really pay attention to inner beauty? How many of us give more importance to ideas and feelings than to the color of a person's eyes or hairstyle? If we were in Alex's position, would it be a tragedy for us or a liberation? And if we fell in love with someone with that condition, could we tolerate it? Wouldn't we need to wake up every morning with the emotion of recognizing familiar features on the face of the person we love? There are many questions that can be asked and many topics that can be discussed from this mini series of six episodes that combined don't add up to more than 45 minutes. La premisa de The Beauty Inside es una mezcla de amor y fantasía, pero esos elementos sirven como impulsores de reflexiones bastante interesantes y yo diría que necesarias. En un mundo que parece regirse por las apariencias, los likes, el precio de las cosas, las medidas de un cuerpo perfecto, un estereotipo - en fin, por todo lo superfluo - ¿cuántos realmente se fijan en la belleza interior? ¿cuántos damos más importancia a las ideas y a los sentimientos que al color de los ojos o el peinado de una persona? Si estuviéramos en la posición de Alex, ¿sería una tragedia para nosotros o una liberación? Y si nos enamorásemos de alguien con esa condición, ¿podríamos sopotarlo? ¿no nos haría falta despertar cada mañana con la emoción de reconocer unos rasgos familiares en el rostro de la persona amada? Son muchas las preguntas que puede uno hacerse y muchos los temas que se pueden conversar a partir de esta mini serie de seis capítulos que combinados no suman más de 45 minutos.
