If you haven't heard the name François Truffaut before, it's because either you're very young or you need to see more cinema. But real cinema. Truffaut was a French director, screenwriter, critic and actor, the main representative of the nouvelle vague and one of the most iconic directors in France and the world. I knew all that, I had seen a lot of French cinema (Varda, Goddard) and yet, until two nights ago I had barely seen a single Truffaut film, the one that earned him the Best Director award at the Cannes Festival in 1959, Les Quatre Cents Coups (Les 400 Coups). To pay off my debt to him a little, I decided to watch one of his most memorable films and one of the favorites of the late writer Gabriel García Márquez.
Si no has escuchado antes el nombre de François Truffaut es porque, o eres muy joven, o te falta ver más cine. Pero cine de verdad. Truffaut fue un director, guionista, crítico y actor francés, principal representante de la nouvelle vague y de los directores más icónicos de Francia y el mundo. Yo sabía todo eso, había visto bastante cine francés (Varda, Goddard) y sin embargo, hasta hace dos noches apenas había visto una sola película de Truffaut, la que le valió el premio a Mejor Director en el Festival de Cannes en 1959, Les Quatre Cents Coups (Les 400 Coups). Para saldar un poco mi deuda con él, decidí ver una de sus películas más recordadas y una de las favoritas de fallecido escritor Gabriel García Márquez.
Jules et Jim is, in principle, the story of a great friendship, that of two men who meet some years before the World War. One is Austrian, blonde, short, a womanizer (that's Jules); The other is French, taller, darker, with a mustache and hasn't met many women (that's Jim). Just as love can arise at first sight, it is also possible for friendship to arise at the first moment and precisely that is what happens with these two young people who become inseparable from the very beginning. They go to the gym together, go for a walk, go to dinner with women, and above all, they spend their time having conversations about topics that seem important to them. They are both writers (although Jim seems to be more firm in that vocation, while Jules dedicates herself to that and various things) and they mutually translate the poems that are suitable for reading, one into German and the other into French. Up to that point, there don't seem to be any surprises, we're watching a movie called Jules et Jim and it's about the friendship between a guy named Jules and another named Jim. Simple, right? But then a question arises: who is the woman who appears on the promotional posters for the film, sometimes accompanying her friends and sometimes alone? If the title of the film is the names of the two protagonist friends, why does neither of them appear on the Poster and instead a woman appears? The girl's name is Catherine and she is the force that moves the plot of the entire film.
Jules et Jim es, en princpio, la historia de una gran amistad, la de dos hombres que se conocen algunos años antes de la primera guerra mundial. Uno es austríaco, rubio, bajito, mujeriego (ese es Jules); el otro es francés, más alto, moreno, con bigote y no ha conocido muchas mujeres (ese es Jim). Así como pede surgir el amor a primera vista, también es posible que surja la amistad a primer momento y precisamente eso es lo que ocurre con estos dos jóvenes que se convierten en inseparables desde el mismísimo comienzo. Van juntos al gimnasio, salen a caminar, van a cenar con mujeres, y sobre todo se la pasan teniendo conversaciones sobre temas que a ellos les parecen importantes. Ambos son escritores (aunque Jim parece ser más firme en esa vocación, mientras Jules se dedica a esa y varias cosas) y se traducen mutuamente los poemas que se prestan para leerse, uno al alemán y el otro al francés. Hasta allí, no parece haber sorpresas, estamos viendo una película llamada Jules et Jim y que se trata de la amistad entre un tipo llamado Jules y otro llamado Jim. Simple, ¿cierto? Pero luego nos surge una duda, ¿quién es entonces la mujer que aparece en los afiches promocionales de la película, a veces acompañando a los amigos y a veces sola? Si la película tiene como título los nombres de los dos amigos protagonistas, ¿por qué en el Poster no aparece ninguno de los dos y sí en cambio aparece una mujer? La chica se llama Catherine y es la fuerza que mueve la trama de toda la película.
Jules met Catherine at a dinner with Jim and two other women, but for a month he found himself with her, leaving his friend aside. When Jules finally tells Jim that he wants him to meet Catherine and give him his opinion on the woman he will probably end up marrying, he tells him that he's happy that he's going to meet her but warns his friend: "I don't plan to share her".
Jules conoció a Catherine en una cena con Jim y con otras dos mujeres, pero durante un mes se vio con ella dejando de lado a su amigo. Cuando finalmente Jules le cuenta a Jim que quiere que él conozca a Catherine y le de su opinión sobre la mujer con la que probalemente acabe casándose, le dice que está feliz de que la vaya a conocer pero le advierte a su amigo "no pienso compartirla".
Until then, the friends had been inseparable and even though each one goes their separate ways living their lives, they love each other too much and that is why they want to maintain closeness. But now a third element is added to that relationship, a woman who is as fun as she is unpredictable, explosive, seductive, capricious, free, witty and beautiful. Jim tells Jules that in his opinion Catherine is a force of nature, someone to be admired by everyone, but not to be loved by just one man. In that minute, Jim recognizes how attractive the girl is to his friend and can understand it, but he's not particularly attracted to her because he is dating a woman named Gilberte. However, time passes, the three protagonists begin to share more and more and Jim begins to fall in love with Catherine and she with him, without ceasing to love Jules, because just as Jim anticipated, Catherine is a woman who is not made to be loved by - nor to love - a single man. Now, this love triangle does not develop with the typical rivalry between friends, but rather the opposite. I was very struck by the fact that Jules and Jim never stopped being best friends, even knowing that they loved the same woman and that she loved them both. The bond between these two young men who later had to fight on opposing sides during the World War is truly an unbreakable bond. To some it will seem like a mature, adult, firm and anything-proof friendship. Others will see them as a couple of fools.
Hasta entonces los amigos habían sido inseparables y a pesar de que cada uno anda por su lado viviendo su vida, se estiman demasiado y por eso quieren mantener la cercanía. Pero ahora se suma un tercer elemento a esa relación, una mujer que es tan divertida como imprevisible, explosiva, seductora, caprichosa, libre, ocurrente y hermosa. Jim le dice a Jules que en su opinión Catherine es una fuerza de la naturaleza, alguien para ser admirada por todos, pero no para ser amada por un solo hombre. En ese minuto, Jim reconoce lo atractiva que le resulta la chica a su amigo y lo puede entender, pero no se siente particularmente atraído por ella porque él sale con una mujer llamada Gilberte. Sin embargo, el tiempo pasa, los tres protagonistas comienzan a compartir más y más y Jim comienza a enamorarse de Catherine y esta de él, sin dejar de amar a Jules, porque tal como lo anticipó Jim, Catherine es una mujer que no está hecha para ser amada por - ni para amar a - un solo hombre. Ahora bien, este triángulo amoroso no se desarrolla con la típica rivalidad entre los amigos, sino más bien al contrario. Me llamó mucho la atención que Jules y Jim nunca dejaran de ser amigos, ni siquiera sabiendo que amaban a la misma mujer y que ella los amaba a los dos. El vínculo entre estos dos jóvenes que luego tuvieron que luchar en bandos contrarios durante la primera guerra mundial es en verdad un vínculo inquebrantable. A algunos les parecerá una amistad madura, adulta, firme y a prueba de todo. Otros lo verán como un par de tontos.
Although the film begins with the two friends, the plot gains strength with the entry on the scene of Catherine (an impeccable Jeanne Moreau) and the destinies of the three will intertwine in unexpected ways throughout the years in which love flows in all directions in that triangle. Catherine thinks that in love, the couple is not the ideal figure, because she recognizes herself incapable of loving a single person. You can say what you want about this character, but it cannot be denied that she acts according to her convictions.
Si bien la película inicia con los dos amigos, la trama gana fuerza con la entrada en escena de Catherine (una impecable Jeanne Moreau) y los destinos de los tres se entrelazarán de maneras insospechadas a lo largo de los años en que el amor fluye en todas las direcciones en ese triángulo. Catherine piensa que en el amor, la pareja no es la figura ideal, porque se reconoce incapaz de amar a una sola persona. Se podrá decir lo que se quiera de este personaje, pero no podrá negarse que actúa de acuerdo a sus convicciones.
Catherine is the ideal protagonist: strong, funny, beautiful, mischievous, unpredictable, magnetic, fragile, loving, insecure... she embodies the woman (or women) that all men have ever loved or wanted to love. That's why it's impossible to hate her. Added to this are the best friends that have ever been seen on the big screen, whose friendship literally resists the battles of war and love and who embody the men that many of us would have wanted to be at that time, dedicated to art, literature, sculpture, and to have philosophical conversations on the seashore. The universe of Jules et Jim is a bohemian, free, artistic and romantic world. And this whole story, written by François Truffaut and Jean Gruault based on the novel by Henri Pierre Roché, directed beautifully by Truffaut, with music by Georges Delerue and photography by Raoul Coutard, is one of the best films I have ever seen. I'm not saying that it is one of the best French films, or one of the best films of the sixties or in black and white, but one of the best films ever made in the history of cinema. It was released more than sixty years ago, but its characters are as alive as then, it's a story with infidelities, some jealousy, yes, tragedy, but above all those things, it's a song to life, friendship and love. Catherine es la protagonista ideal: fuerte, divertida, hermosa, pícara, imprevisible, magnética, frágil, amorosa, insegura... encarna a la mujer (o a las mujeres) que todos los hombres alguna vez amaron o quisieron amar. Por eso es imposible odiarla. A ella se suman los mejores amigos que se han visto en la gran pantalla, cuya amistad resiste literalmente las batallas de la guerra y del amor y que encarnan a los hombres que muchos hubiéramos querido ser en esa época, dedicados al arte, la literatura, la escultura, y a tener conversaciones filosóficas a la orilla del mar. El universo de Jules et Jim es un mundo bohemio, libre, artístico y romántico. Y toda esta historia, escrita por François Truffaut y Jean Gruault a partir de la novela de Henri Pierre Roché, dirigida hermosamente por Truffaut, con la música de Georges Delerue y la fotografía de Raoul Coutard es una de las mejores películas que he visto en mi vida. No estoy diciendo que es una de las mejores películas francesas, o de las mejores películas de los años sesenta o en blanco y negro sino una de las mejores películas jamás realizadas en la historia del cine. Fue estrenada hace más de sesenta años, pero sus personajes están tan vivos como entonces, es una historia con infidelidades, algo de celos, sí, de tragedia, pero por sobre todas esas cosas, es un canto a la vida, a la amistad y al amor.
