¿Quiénes serán los grandes ganadores este año?
Next Sunday, April 25th, will take place the ceremony of the prestigious Academy Awards and since I know one post is not enough to talk about all the films and categories (in fact, I believe that five are still insufficient), I decided to divide the topic in two posts, this one and one I'll do next Thursday.
El próximo domingo 25 de abril se celebrará la ceremonia de entrega de los prestigiosos premios de la Academia y como sé que un post es insuficiente para hablar de todas las películas y las categorías (de hecho, creo que cinco siguen siendo insuficientes), decidí dividir el tema en dos publicaciones, esta y una que haré el próximo jueves.
As a relevant information for this year we have that the categories of Best sound mixing and Best sound editing were merged into a single category called Best sound, a decision that was made because the scope of both was not always very clear. In particular, I never knew how to judge one separate from the other and it was a surprise to me when two different films triumphed in these two categories. So, with that merger, the total of the categories has been reduced to 23. I will leave the main 8 for Thursday and today I will talk a little about the other 15.
I'll start with the categories where I cannot comment responsibly because I couldn't see any of the nominated works: Best Live Action Short Film, Best Animated Short Film, Best Documentary Short Subject and Best documentary feature. Although in this last category I could only see one of the nominees, the Chilean film The mole agent by Maite Alberdi and Marcela Santibáñez, I want it to win because I thought it was an interesting proposal and because it's a Latin American film.
Como información relevante para este año tenemos que las categorías de Mejor mezcla de sonido y Mejor edición de sonido su fusionaron en una sola categoría llamada Mejor sonido, decisión que se tomó porque el alcance de ambas no siempre quedaba muy claro. En lo particular, nunca supe cómo juzgar una separada de la otra y era una sorpresa para mí cuando triunfaban dos películas diferentes en estas dos categorías. Así que, con esa fusión, el total de las categorías se ha reducido a 23. Dejaré las 8 principales para el jueves y hoy hablaré un poco de las otras 15.
Comenzaré con las categorías en donde no puedo opinar responsablemente porque no pude ver ninguno de los trabajos nominados: Mejor cortometraje, Mejor cortometraje animado, Mejor cortometraje documental y Mejor largometraje documental. Si bien en esta última categoría sólo pude ver una de las nominadas, la película chilena El agente topo de Maite Alberdi y Marcela Santibáñez, quiero que gane porque me pareció una propuesta interesante y porque es una película latinoamericana.
Let's get down to the technical stuff. In the new category of Best Sound are nominated Greyhound, Mank, News of the World, Soul and my favorite Sound of Metal, whose sound is not only very well executed but is also indispensable to the movie experience. Five other different films compete for Best Visual Effects: Love and Monsters, Midnight Sun, Mulan, The One and Only Ivan and Tenet, Cristopher Nolan's most recent film and my clear favorite to succeed in this category and in Best Production Design. This last one is referred in general lines to the aspect that the scenes in which the action of a movie takes place will have, whether they are sets or locations and Tenet is wonderful, although I also loved The father at this point.
Vayamos a lo técnico. En la categoría nueva de Mejor sonido están nominadas Greyhound, Mank, News of the World, Soul y mi favorita Sound of Metal, cuyo sonido no sólo está muy bien ejecutado sino que además es indispensable para la experiencia de la película. Otras cinco películas diferentes compiten por Mejores efectos visuales: Love and Monsters, Cielo de medianoche, Mulan, The One and Only Ivan y Tenet, la película más reciente de Cristopher Nolan y mi clara favorita para triunfar en esta categoría y en Mejor diseño de producción. Esta última comprende en líneas generales el aspecto que tendrán los escenarios en los que se desarrolla la acción de una película, ya sean decorados o localizaciones y lo de Tenet, es maravilloso, aunque también me encantó lo de The father en este punto.
In Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling almost the same films compete, Emma, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Mank and Pinocchio, go for the two statuettes, while Mulan competes only in costumes and Hillbilly, a rural elegy only competes in the other category. In wardrobe I'm going with Alexandra Byrne who was in charge of the wardrobe in Emma and who already has an Oscar in her career for another job in a period film. Of makeup and hairstyle, I'm between Emma and Mank, although the truth is that I did not see Pinocho and the work of Sergio López-Rivera, Mia Neal and Jamilka Wilson in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom was also excellent.
En Mejor diseño de vestuario y Mejor maquillaje y peluquería compiten casi las mismas películas, Emma, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Mank y Pinocho van por las dos estatuillas, mientras que Mulan compite sólo en vestuario y Hillbilly, una elegía rural sólo lo hace en la otra categoría. En vestuario me voy con Alexandra Byrne quien fue la encargada del vestuario en Emma y quien ya tiene un Oscar en su carrera por otro trabajo en una película de época. De maquillaje y peinado, estoy entre Emma y Mank, aunque la verdad es que no vi Pinocho y lo de Sergio López-Rivera, Mia Neal y Jamilka Wilson en Ma Rainey's Black Bottom fue un trabajo excelente también.

On Best Original Score my favorites are Soul (Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste) and Mank (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross), so in either case, Mr. Reznor would go home with a gold statuette (the other nominees are Da 5 Bloods, Minari and News of the World). However, in the category of Best Original Song, the decision seems more difficult to me. I really like "Fight for You" by Judas and the Black Messiah (Music: HER and Dernst Emile II Lyrics: HER and Tiara Thomas) and "Hear My Voice" by The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Music: Daniel Pemberton Lyrics: Daniel Pemberton and Celeste Waite), but «Io Sì (Seen)» by La vita davanti a sé has already won the category at the Golden Globes, with an incredible collaboration: music by Diane Warren and lyrics by her with Laura Pausini.
En Mejor banda sonora mis favoritas son Soul (Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross y Jon Batiste) y Mank (Trent Reznor y Atticus Ross), así que en cualquiera de los dos casos, el señor Reznor se iría a casa con una estatuilla dorada (las otras nominadas son Da 5 Bloods, Minari y News of the World). Sin embargo, en la categoría de Mejor canción original, la decisión me parece más difícil. Me gustan mucho «Fight for You» de Judas and the Black Messiah (Música: H.E.R. and Dernst Emile II Letra: H.E.R. and Tiara Thomas) y «Hear My Voice» de El juicio de los 7 de Chicago (Música: Daniel Pemberton Letra: Daniel Pemberton y Celeste Waite), pero «Io Sì (Seen)» de La vita davanti a sé ya se llevó la categoría en los Globos de Oro, con una colaboración increíble: música de Diane Warren y letra de ella junto a Laura Pausini.
Best Film Editing refers to the narrative or rhythmic order of the elements that make up the chronology of a film and it's difficult for me to choose because the five nominees have an impressive montage, but my favorites are The Chicago 7 trial and The Father, above Nomadland, Promising Young Woman and Sound of Metal. A little easier is to choose for Best Cinematography, because Joshua James Richards's work in Nomadland blew my mind; without a doubt it's my favorite to succeed in the category.
Mejor montaje se refiere al orden narrativo o rítmico de los elementos que conforman la cronología de una película y se me hace difícil elegir porque las cinco nominadas tienen un montaje impresionante, pero mis favoritas son El juicio de los 7 de Chicago y The Father, por encima de Nomadland, Promising Young Woman y Sound of Metal. Un poco más fácil lo tengo en Mejor fotografía, porque el trabajo de Joshua James Richards en Nomadland me voló la cabeza; sin duda es mi favorito para triunfar en la categoría.
Soul is the clear favorite in Best animated featura film, not only because of the excellent film it is but because the people of Pixar are the owners of the category, having won 10 awards out of a total of 13 nominations to this date. Although, if they wanted to surprise us this time, I would like it to win Wolfwalkers, a fantastic magical and medieval adventure, co-produced between Ireland, France and the United Kingdom.
Soul es la clara favorita en Mejor película de animación, no sólo por la excelente película que es sino porque la gente de Pixar son los dueños de la categoría, habiendo ganado a la fecha 10 premios de un total de 13 nominaciones. Aunque, si quisieran sorprendernos esta vez, me gustaría que ganase Wolfwalkers, una fantástica aventura mágica y medieval, coproducida entre Irlanda, Francia y el Reino Unido.
To finish we have the award for Best international feature film, one of my favorite categories but one of which I can never see all the nominees before the ceremony due to geographical and broadcast rights issues. This year three films that I have not seen are nominated, Collective (Romania) The Man Who Sold His Skin (Tunisia) and Quo Vadis, Aida? (Bosnia and Herzegovina). The two that I saw and I really liked were Better Days (Hong Kong) and the Danish Another Round (Denmark), my favorite because I really like the work of the director Thomas Vinterberg who I met with The hunt.
Para terminar tenemos el premio a Mejor película internacional, una de mis categorías favoritas pero una de las que nunca puedo ver todas las nominadas antes de la ceremonia por cuestiones geográficas y de derechos de difusión. Este año están nominadas tres películas que no he visto, Collective (Rumania)The Man Who Sold His Skin (Túnez) y Quo Vadis, Aida? (Bosnia y Herzegovina). Las dos que vi y me gustaron muchísimo fueron Better Days (Hong Kong) y la danesa Another Round (Dinamarca), mi favorita porque me gusta mucho el trabajo del director Thomas Vinterberg a quien conocí con The hunt.
