Of all the films nominated for the main category of the upcoming Academy Awards, I was missing only this one. Curiously, it was one of the ones I wanted to see the most, but for one reason or another I ended up seeing the others first. I just have to say: it was worth the wait.

De todas las películas nominadas a la categoría principal de la próxima entrega de los premios de la academia, sólo me faltaba ver esta. Curiosamente, era una de las que mas tenía ganas de ver, pero por una u otra razón acabé viendo las demás primero. Sólo tengo que decir: valió la pena la espera.

Long story short, Sound of Metal tells the story of a young rock band drummer who begins to lose his hearing. So they say, in two lines, most of the summaries that are read on the internet, which places us immediately at the center of the drama. Losing, partially or totally, the capacity of any of our senses, can be devastating for anyone, but for a musician to lose their ability to hear is even more tragic, it would be as if a painter went blind, or a dancer lost his legs in an accident, it means a drastic change in a life that will never be the same again. Surely there will be someone who mentions that Beethoven was deaf and still managed to be one of the most famous composers of all time, yes, but Beethoven was born deaf and lived with it every day of his life. The case of Ruben Stone, the protagonist of the film, is that he used to listening and overnight, in a matter of a few days, almost completely loses his hearing. The anxiety, terror, pain, despair that a person must feel in such a situation are greatly reflected by Riz Ahmed on the screen.

En pocas palabras, Sound of Metal narra la historia de un joven baterista de una banda de rock que comienza a perder la audición. Eso dicen, en dos líneas, la mayoría de los resúmenes que se leen en internet, lo que nos ubica de inmediato en el centro del drama. Perder, parcial o totalmente, la capacidad de alguno de nuestros sentidos, puede ser devastador para cualquier persona, pero que un músico pierda su capacidad de oír es aún más trágico, sería como si un pintor quedase ciego, o un bailarín perdiese las piernas en un accidentes, signigfica un cambio drástico en una vida que ya no volverá a ser como antes. Seguramete habrá alguno que mencione que Beethoven era sordo y aún así logró ser uno de los compositores más celebres de todos los tiempos, sí, pero Beethoven nació sordo y vivió con ello siempre. El caso de Ruben Stone, el protagonista de la película, está acostumbrado a escuchar y de la noche a la mañana, en cuestión de pocos días, pierde casi completamente su capacidad auditiva. La ansiedad, el terror, el dolor, la desesperación que debe sentir una persona en tal situación son reflejadas de gran forma por Riz Ahmed en la pantalla.

But in addition to that dramatic core, there are things that those two lines of the summary do not tell you: for example, that Ruben is not only a drummer, but that his band's vocalist is the woman he loves, and they do not tell you that they have shared four years away from drugs after being addicted and living stormy lives. Lou was Ruben's salvation and Ruben was Lou's; together they had this band and now, not only the future of their musical project but their life project threatens to dissolve.

Pero además de ese núcleo dramático, hay cosas que esas dos líenas de la sinopsis no te dicen: por ejemplo que Ruben no sólo es baterista, sino que la vocalista de su banda es la mujer que él ama, Y no te dicen que han compartido cuatro años alejados de las drogas después de haber sido adictos y haber vivido vidas tormentossas. Lou fue la salvación de Ruben y Ruben la de Lou; juntos tenían esta banda y ahora, no sólo el futuro de su proyecto muscial sino su proyecto de vida amenaza con disolverse.

Reluctant to go at first, Ruben goes to an institution that supports men, women and children who have a hearing impairment and helps them cope with and enjoy life. Little by little, Ruben earns his place there and lets his heart calm down a bit, even for a moment he seems to accept his new reality, but the truth is that deep down he refuses to give up his normal life, his life from before. The idea of ​​undergoing a very expensive surgery to regain hearing is fixed in his mind and he thinks he can also gain back with it his drums, his band, his love and his life, everything he's lost at the moment.

Reacio a internarse al principio, Ruben acude a una institución que brinda apoyo a hombres, mujeres y niños que tienen una discapacidad auditiva y les ayuda a enfrentar y disfrutar la vida. Poco a poco, Ruben se va ganando su lugar allí y deja que su corazón se tranquilice un poco, incluso por un momento parece aceptar su nueva realidad, pero lo cierto es que en el fondo se rehúsa a rencunciar a su vida normal, a su vida de antes. En su mente está fija la idea de someterse a una costosísima cirugía para recuperar la audición y con ello su batería, su banda, su amor y su vida, todo lo que de momento ha perdido.

I thought it was a genius on the part of the director to show in an alternate way the ambient, normal sound of the external world to Ruben and the way in which he begins to perceive the increasingly elusive, muffled, distant sounds, until reaching moments of absolute silence. It's a way of involving the viewer within the emotions and sensations of the protagonist, which Florian Zeller also achieved in The father, but in a different way

Me pareció una genialidad por parte del director el mostrar de manera alternada el sonido ambiente, normal, del mundo externo a Ruben y la forma en cómo el comienza a percibir los sonidos cada vez más esquivos, amortigudados, distantes, hasta llegar a momentos de absoluto silencio. Es una manera de involucrar al espectador dentro de las emociones y sensaciones del protagonista, cosa que también logró Florian Zeller en The father, pero de otra manera.

The film is well told, has a good script and great performances, highlighting Ahmed's who specially prepared for months for this role and learned sign language. Until now, I had only thought about deaf-mutes, people who are born without hearing capacity and as a consequence don't develop speech (you learn to speak, above all, by repeating what you hear), but Sound of metal talks about hearing loss, does it hurt more to lose what you've had? Or is it worse never having been able to enjoy something like hearing? Whatever the case, those of us who have our five senses in perfect conditions should be grateful to life and I think that this movie also leaves that message.

La película está muy bien contada, tiene un buen guión y muy buenas actuaciones, destacando la de Ahmed quien se preparó especialmente durante meses para este papel y aprendió el lenguaje de señas. Hasta ahora, yo sólo había pensado en los sordomudos, personas que nacen sin capacidad auditiva y como consecuencia no desarrollan el habla (se aprende a hablar, sobre todo, por repetición de lo que se escucha), pero Sound of metal habla de la pérdida de la audición, ¿duele más perder lo que se ha tenido? ¿o es peor nunca haber podido disfrutar de algo como poder escuchar? Cualquiera sea el caso y su opinión, aquellos que tenemos nuestros cinco sentidos en perfecto estado debemos ser agradecidos con la vida y creo que esta película también deja ese mensaje.
