Boy, you can sure hear his voice in this very moment if you have ever watched this, can you?

Breaking Bad is a series that I had heard in only two ways: Either people commenting off-hand that it was really good...or from memes about "Skyler White, yo", Walter White's face and so on.

But as curiosity got the best out of me after having finished the third season of The Boys and left wanting more, I started watching Breaking bad with my brother, who I had watched The Boys with. And from the first episode, it really caught our attention.

On that note, since this will be talking about the entire first season, note that there likely will be spoilers for it, and if you ask me, if you had any interest on watching this before reading this, I suggest that you do and then check this out, since it is really good and some of the twists that can be delivered in this show might not keep all of its momentum if you happen to know them beforehand.

A terrifying hook of a pilot through the lens of a desperate man

The way the show begins is in the same way some movies and stories emphasize a specific situation: Something that is happening or had happened that is a ludicrous situation is shown without any explanation, and then you're sent back to actually meet the story behind the characters and sooner or later find out how everything ended up like it was shown at the beginning.

The desert shot of Walter White recording a confessionon a camera as if he was getting ready to be caught with evidence and/or having to escape into the desert after having commited some sort of crime (which can be seen with the bodies inside the crashed vehicle nearby them) and without any pants for some reason was all what it needed to let you know something messed up had happened to mister Walter White.

And yet you're promptly taken to slow yet pacific moments of his life as a working man, getting to support his family but also being past his prime of age as a revered scientist, currently working instead as an university science teacher and as a car washer, with the toll of fainting into the car washing job and finding out that he has lung cancer being quite precarious on his psyche.

By twisted fate of finding out that one of his old college students, Jesse Pinkman, was involved in selling meth after getting to see him escape from a drug busting operation commanded by his brother-in law in the DEA, Hank Schraeder, he ends up deciding to take his knowledge to this guy in an attempt to make enough money for the future of his family as he sees his days counted regardless of whatever treatment is possible for him. And then there's everything that happens after they met to knowing why he was stranded at the desert, only this time with an explanation and closure for that moment in particular.

It only gets better and better from there.

The difference that context makes in famous scenes

You might have seen already countless memes about Jesse and White (oh, sorry, "Mr. White") talking, that one clip of "My name is Skyler White, yo" (insert sound effects), and even things like the cast of Breaking Bad racing in Mario Karty and Tuco being edited to cook and then sniff the Infinity Stones in front on Thanos (the latter made by Alternative Cuts, really fun channel with edits like these). If anything, chances are that many have seen or heard first of Breaking Bad because of how often it was possible to stumble with any sort of meme related to it or with its characters.

So what is the difference between knowing and not knowing?

Well, for the case of the Skyler scene, that was right after Jesse accidentally made a mess out of a decomposed body (long story) inside his home and had to get rid of the bag with its contents...and Skyler happened to show up to interrogate him over why had he talked with Walter before that. In that very moment, Skyler hits him with that way of talking over her anger and knowledge of that he had been talking in some way with Walter, while Jesse's clearly holding his pants when he's literally holding a dead person's body in a bag right as she showed up.

And on the other hand, that video from Tuco whacking Thanos as I showed you? It was done between the scenes between trying the meth Walter and Jesse cooked during negotiations, beating Jesse with the bag after he asked too much money, and then literally beating a man until he basically died. You don't see a drug mafioso sniff infinity stones with ease as a joke, you see a demented and relentless drug mafioso demostrating the kind of danger that Walter and Jesse really got involved with.

There's also another scene that has been REALLY memed on the internet but has an insane context behind it...and I wouldn't be able to talk it until I'm finished with ALL of Breaking Bad, since it happens to be a massive, massive spoiler.

So let's move on something else.

The illusion of an easy solution that spirals into madness

So Walter White decides to break bad and use Jesse to get some big money out of his science knowledge by cooking meth, as he sees it as the one and only way to make enough money for a future for which he doesn't see himself but wants for his family. Despite that however, while this new recklessness and lack of self-regard has him do some really bold and impressive things (including reinvigorating him on his...private life, but only at first), it also made him essentially start living a double life and even take huge risks with his own life (and to his dismay, Jesse's) when having to deal with Tuco after getting rid of Krazy-8.

And yeah, he indeed ended up murdering Krazy-8 (which means that he killed a man, and that stays in his consciousness for obvious reasons), and that was the first big moment of this spiral he's in that can really be felt when it happened.

At the same time, while Jesse had been already on a dire place with his cooking business and substance abuse, he might have caught on a lot of money at first off the quality of what they did thanks to Walter, but it is clear over the season that he might have definitely tried biting more than what he can chew in the very moment he had to even think about disposing of his previous contractor Krazy-8, and then getting entangled with the madman that is Tuco Salamanca

And yet, the story doesn't simply go between those two, but also the struggle from the other characters like Skyler having to see his husband go through so many weird changes and disappearances after knowing of his cancer (and she didn't even find out from Walter himself), his son having to deal with all that goes on between Walter and Skyler on top of his own business due to his condition, and Hank having to do the job he does while also having to keep tabs with Walter and Skyler, along with his wife Marie who has her own struggles with kleptomania.

If anything, everything is kept up with very well and emotionally engaging from all the points of view shown, which is what can be attributed to the quality behind the premise and how it was done.

Veredict?

This was the perfect way to fill the void from having to wait for The Boys's spinoff Gen V (and the fourth season) with something just as amazing in many aspects to watch.

As of writing this, I have also watched the first three episodes of the second season, and so far it has been keeping up with the pace real good too, so I can't wait to see what the rest of this season (let a lone the other three seasons after this) await for me and my brother.

Y, sin embargo, te lleva a momentos lentos pero pacíficos de su vida como trabajador, manteniendo a su familia, pero también pasando su mejor momento como científico venerado, trabajando actualmente como profesor universitario de ciencias y como lavacoches, con el peaje de desmayarse en el trabajo de lavacoches y descubrir que tiene cáncer de pulmón siendo bastante precario en su psique.

La diferencia que marca el contexto en las escenas famosas

Puede que hayas visto ya incontables memes sobre Jesse y White (oh, perdón, "Mr. White") hablando, ese clip de "My name is Skyler White, yo" (inserta efectos de sonido), e incluso cosas como el reparto de Breaking Bad corriendo en Mario Karty y Tuco siendo editado para cocinar y luego esnifar las Infinity Stones delante de Thanos (este último hecho por Alternative Cuts, un canal realmente divertido con ediciones como estas). En todo caso, lo más probable es que muchos hayan visto u oído hablar primero de Breaking Bad por lo a menudo que era posible tropezar con cualquier tipo de meme relacionado con ella o con sus personajes.

Entonces, ¿cuál es la diferencia entre saber y no saber?

Bueno, para el caso de la escena de Skyler, eso fue justo después de que Jesse accidentalmente hiciera un desastre con un cuerpo descompuesto (larga historia) dentro de su casa y tuviera que deshacerse de la bolsa con su contenido... y Skyler apareciera para interrogarlo sobre por qué había hablado con Walter antes de eso. No ves a un mafioso de la droga esnifando piedras infinitas con facilidad como una broma, ves a un mafioso de la droga demente e implacable demostrando el tipo de peligro en el que Walter y Jesse realmente se involucraron.

También hay otra escena que ha sido REALMENTE memetizada en internet pero que tiene un contexto demencial detrás... y no podría hablar de ella hasta que termine con TODO Breaking Bad, ya que resulta ser un enorme, masivo spoiler.

Así que pasemos a otra cosa.

La ilusión de una solución fácil que se convierte en locura

Así que Walter White decide romper el mal y utilizar a Jesse para sacar mucho dinero de sus conocimientos científicos cocinando metanfetamina, ya que lo ve como la única forma de ganar suficiente dinero para un futuro en el que no se ve a sí mismo pero que quiere para su familia. A pesar de eso, aunque esta nueva temeridad y falta de autoestima le hace hacer algunas cosas realmente atrevidas e impresionantes (incluyendo revigorizarle en su... vida privada, pero sólo al principio), también le hace esencialmente empezar a vivir una doble vida e incluso correr grandes riesgos con su propia vida (y para su consternación, con la de Jesse) al tener que lidiar con Tuco después de deshacerse de Krazy-8. Y sí, de hecho acaba asesinando a Tuco.

Y sí, efectivamente acabó asesinando a Krazy-8 (lo que significa que mató a un hombre, y eso permanece en su conciencia por razones obvias), y ese fue el primer gran momento de esta espiral en la que se encuentra que realmente se puede sentir cuando sucedió.

Al mismo tiempo, mientras Jesse ya estaba en un lugar calamitoso con su negocio de cocina y el abuso de sustancias, puede que al principio haya cogido mucho dinero de la calidad de lo que hacían gracias a Walter, pero está claro a lo largo de la temporada que puede que definitivamente haya intentado morder más de lo que puede masticar en el mismo momento en que tuvo que pensar siquiera en deshacerse de su anterior contratista Krazy-8, y luego enredarse con el loco que es Tuco Salamanca

Y sin embargo, la historia no va simplemente entre esos dos, sino también la lucha de los otros personajes como Skyler que tiene que ver a su marido pasar por tantos cambios extraños y desapariciones después de conocer su cáncer (y ella ni siquiera se enteró por el propio Walter), su hijo que tiene que lidiar con todo lo que pasa entre Walter y Skyler además de su propio negocio debido a su condición, y Hank que tiene que hacer el trabajo que hace mientras que también tiene que vigilar a Walter y Skyler, junto con su esposa Marie que tiene sus propias luchas con la cleptomanía.

En todo caso, todo se mantiene muy bien y emocionalmente atractivo desde todos los puntos de vista que se muestran, que es lo que se puede atribuir a la calidad detrás de la premisa y la forma en que se hizo.

Veredicto

Esta fue la manera perfecta de llenar el vacío de tener que esperar a que el spinoff de The Boys Gen V (y la cuarta temporada) con algo igual de increíble en muchos aspectos para ver.

En el momento de escribir esto, también he visto los tres primeros episodios de la segunda temporada, y hasta ahora ha sido mantener el ritmo muy bueno también, así que no puedo esperar a ver lo que el resto de esta temporada (dejar un solo las otras tres temporadas después de esto) esperan para mí y mi hermano.
